Work Text:
Using the handle of his knife to lightly tap on his glass, Katsuki stands from his previously seated position, surprising himself by not breaking the fragile piece as everyone turns their attention to him.
"You guys know I'm no good at these fuckin' things," his voice was low as laughter filters around him, his own lips curling up into a slight smile, "but I saw this the other day; and I felt I needed to include it."
He pulls a folded piece of paper from his back pocket, the paper itself wrinkled from the night before when he crumbled it up - at the time thinking what he's about to do was stupid.
"It's a fuckin' poem, believe it or not." A few more laughs surround him before he takes a shaky breath, the green eyes beside him still causing his heart to stutter.
"Isn't it absolutely, terrifyingly, shockingly amazing how words - those tiny little sounds in this chemical filled air; those shapeless weird marks on stark white paper - can make or break living, breathing people - stab them at heart without a single weapon, push them off their strong, firm feet, take away the earth they used to stand at. Words, they're powerlessly powerful, so use yours well." The silence that followed was almost deafening, the blonde using his thumb to fold the paper between his index and middle fingers.
"A lot of you already know, but I was a real bastard to Izuku when we were all younger. Most of you are probably thinking back to U.A., but it went farther than that. It goes all the way back to when we were five or six. I got praised for things I shouldn't have, and he didn't have a quirk. It was instantaneous. I was too young with too much nonexistent power, and it only grew. I've said many things to him, some things worse than others; but there was one thing I told him that was unforgivable, and I still resent myself for it. It was before U.A., we were both still in middle school. I told him that if he wanted to become a hero so badly, then he should take a swan dive off the roof of the building and see if he becomes one in his next life." The blonde couldn't help but squeeze his eyes shut, his free hand clenching into a fist at his side. "Then the next thing I know, we're both at the same high school, and the nerd's inching his way back into my life." His eyes opening, Katsuki couldn't help but let out a light laugh before he unfolds and looks back at the poem. "When I first saw this, I immediately thought of Izuku. I wouldn't have been surprised if he wrote it himself. He's always had a way with words, and he knows, more than anyone, how they can affect a person. That's why, whenever he saves someone, he always says that it's okay, because just those two words can completely change someone's negative thought process to positive. I've been on the receiving end more than once, and I know there's no other hero that can compare. I may not believe him sometimes, especially when it has to do with my dumbass, but I couldn't be more grateful." Dropping his arm to the side, rubies meet emeralds, and the blonde couldn't help but smile. "Thank you, and I love you."
"Kacchan.." Izuku stood quickly, tears swimming in his eyes as he immediately pulled Katsuki into a hug. Strong arms wrapped around him quickly, one hand meeting green curls while the other arm wrapped around his shoulders tightly. The blonde was never publicly affectionate, so the greenette could only bask in his warmth as he wrapped his arms around the taller's waist, Katsuki gently resting his chin on the mop of green in return. As Izuku held his newly-wedded husband tighter, he couldn't help but reminisce back to when they were just about four - no quirks or 'nonexistent power' - just hugging his best friend as he saved the greenette with a toy of their favorite hero.
My Kacchan.
