Strong Mind

Summary:

Izuku’s having a bad day.

Kirishima wants to change that.

Notes:

I was trying to write a comfort fic for KoiBun. It isn’t quite as fluffy as I planned, so I’ll write another when I’m in a better mood, but here’s this one for now.

Work Text:

Izuku sat on his bed and watched the All Might clock tick. It was twenty minutes into training, but he’d chosen not to go. There was no way he could face his classmates like this. The day hadn’t been particularly bad, but there had been a sort of sour feeling hanging over him all through classes. Uraraka had asked him if she could borrow a pencil, and somehow that just made him snap. Izuku excused himself to his dorm before training and didn’t come back.

It wasn’t that he was trying to be like this. Actually, he’d give almost anything not to feel like shit. He hated his depressive bouts, especially when they came on for seemingly no reason. He had a good life! He had no reason to feel so sad! He had no right!

Izuku curled up with his All Might plushie and let the tears fall. He tried to keep quiet when he cried, so he didn’t bother anyone. The last thing he wanted was to burden someone with his issues.

A loud knock on the door made him hold in the sobs. “Y...yes?” he called.

“Zuku, it’s me,” Kirishima’s concerned voice said from the other side of the door. “Can I come in?”

“Of course.” Izuku wiped at his eyes and hoped his face wasn’t too red. He sat up as his boyfriend came in, plastering a fake smile on his face.

But Kirishima knew him too well. “You’ve been crying,” he guessed, and Izuku’s smile disappeared.

“I’m sorry,” the green-haired boy said.

“Don’t apologize,” Kirishima said, sitting beside him. He wrapped the smaller boy into a cinnamony hug. “What’s wrong, babe?”

“I don’t know,” Izuku said, melting into his boyfriend’s touch. “I had a breakdown earlier for no reason. I’ve just felt bad all day.” Tears threatened to fall again. “I can’t go to training because I’m afraid I’ll start crying again. It’s stupid.”

“No, it’s not,” Kirishima said. “Knowing your limits is super manly. You gotta take care of yourself before you can take care of others, ya know?” He kissed Izuku’s forehead. “Besides, training ended early. Katsuki put a hole in the wall, so they sent us all away.”

Izuku smiled despite himself. “Of course he did.”

“He lost to Tsuyu and said, ‘I feel like punching something. Where’s Deku?’ And when he couldn’t find you, he threw a fireball at the wall instead.”

Izuku laughed. “I bet Aizawa wasn’t happy.”

“Ah, no kidding,” Kirishima said, grinning. “It’s probably a good thing you weren’t there.”

“Yeah. I guess it’s a good thing my mind is so weak.”

Kirishima pulled away. “Who said it was weak?” he asked.

“Well, it gets depressed for no reason, so it’s obviously pretty weak,” Izuku said.

“I think your mind is strong,” Kirishima said. “You deal with depression every day, but you’re still so cheerful and you help people. You’re super strong to go through hell and still put others first. I admire you, Zuku.”

“You do?” Izuku couldn’t imagine anyone admiring him.

“I do,” Kirishima nodded. “I think I got real lucky, having you as my boyfriend. You make me feel like I can do anything. I want to make you feel as happy as you make me feel.”

Izuku smiled. “You make me very happy, Eiji,” he said.

“Good. Hey, the other day, Katsuki, Denki, Sero, Mina, and I were all at the park, and Katsuki started swearing at a pigeon. Mina got it on video. Wanna see?”

“Definitely!” Izuku laughed. He curled up into Kirishima’s side as he watched the scene on his phone. “That’s funny,” he said when it ended.

“Hell yeah,” Kirishima agreed. “It was super un-manly of him.” He put the phone away and combed his hands through Izuku’s soft hair.

“Kacchan should see a therapist,” Izuku mumbled, yawning. He put his head in Kirishima’s lap and closed his eyes.

“I agree,” Kirishima said. He leaned down and kissed his boyfriend gently on the lips. “You feeling better, Zuku?”

“Mhm.” Izuku hummed a little, clutching Kirishima’s shirt as he drifted off to sleep. The cold emptiness inside him was replaced with a warm, fuzzy ball of happiness. He had his Eijirou with him, so nothing could make him sad now. “Love you, Eiji.”

Kirishima smiled. “Love you too, babe.”

A faint smile appeared on Izuku’s lips, and it stayed with him. When he woke up in the morning, Kirishima was sleeping beside him, and Izuku knew that it was going to be a good day.
