Keeping It Kei

Summary:

Kyo “Nijimura” Kira works undercover as the in-house maid of the Higashikata estate. Trying to decipher more about the Rokakaka business and its medicinal uses while moonlighting as the house handywoman is hard work, especially when working under such a bizarre family as the Higashikatas. Until she can find a way to use the plant to cure her mother, Kyo just needs to live life day by day, day off by day off.
This is primarily a drabbles series of Kyo Nijimura, a criminally underutilized character in both canon and fanon.

Fair warning: I have not reached Jojolion yet but I have read the parts where Kyo is present and I really like her. I just think she’s neat.

Spoilers for up to Chapter 49 of Jojolion.

Warning may change in the future.

Also I am extremely new to AO3 and how it works so I'm still getting used to all this.

Chapter 1: Prologue: Inner Machinations

Chapter Text

Her biweekly days off were not enough away from the Higashikatas. They were a family as bizarre as they are large.

Norisuke, the head of the household, was the least bizarre of them all, but that doesn’t excuse his “bathing suit pancake ritual”. He was extremely kind to Kyo, a kindness she shoulders off but appreciated nonetheless. His estranged wife Kaato comes in and out the house at times, passing sly comments to the housemaid and snickering at her work.

Their son Jobin is surely strange, obsessing about bugs and showing them off to whomever is near, which is nearly always Kyo. His hotheadedness reflects well in his stand, something that Kyo never wants to engage in. His wife and child were people she did not engage in often, but from her few fleeting interactions Mitsuba seemed to be a vain woman and Tsurugi a strange child. She has a sneaking suspicion the latter may have a stand, but she doesn’t want to hang around long enough to figure it out.

Hato’s interest in fashion invades both her work and personal life up to a point where she doesn’t even change in the house anymore for her days off. She may have “good intentions” as Hato puts it, but it’s irritable.

Joshu was her least favorite of them all, his creepy behavior towards women and especially Yasuho always earns a slap from her when she is nearby. Hearing that he has also obtained a stand recently instills a little more fear, but not something that「Born This Way」could not handle.

The youngest Daiya is truly something, from her flirty nature to her excellent navigation around the estate despite her blindness. That nature reminded her of a time before all this Rokakaka shit, but that’s neither her nor there.

And don’t even get her started on Josuke, the “Higashikata” she has the most mixed feelings about. Being a fusion of her late brother and another unknown figure always puts her on edge, sending a chilling feeling apart from her stand when faced with the boy.

Kyo zipped up the duffel bag filled with her change of clothes away from the estate; she surely did not want to be seen in her uniform all day. She patted its sides to assure everything was away: helmet, keys, spare clothing; and closed before hauling it over her shoulder and leaving her assigned room for the next couple of days.

She descended the stairs quietly as to not attract any attention from the kitchen and living room below. She peeked around the corner to see the television on, Tsurugi, Mitsuba, and Jobin gathered around it. Down in the kitchen, Joshu was singing along to something jazzy while preparing some fish sausages he found on sale. She quickly entered the garage to see it already open, with Norisuke already backing out of the garage in his own car.

“Oh, Kyo-san, hello! Heading out for the weekend? Likewise!” he chuckled, waving at the woman.

“Ah, yes, Higashikata-san, just about ready to leave,” she stated, heading for her bike and mounting it.

“I got the garage door, don’t you worry! And just call me Norisuke, no need for the formalities anymore!”

“Eh,” she shrugged.

Kyo took her helmet out the duffel bag and secured it tightly. She pulls out a worn leather jacket as well, donning it confidentially. She walked out her motorbike down the driveway, letting her boss close the door behind her.

“Stay safe and happy travels! See you on Monday!” And with that sendoff, Norisuke sped off to an unknown location, possibly a meeting, Kyo assumes.

Kyo revved up her motorcycle and darted off the estate, not knowing that she was being watched. Hato and Daiya watch in awe as the housemaid leave the gates.

“Where do you think...Kyo runs off to on her days off?” Daiya asks, looking up to her older sister.

“Beats me, but damn is that bike cool,” Hato responds.

Just wanted to do a little warm-up for writing since it has been a hot minute since I tried any non-academic creative writing. Feel free to critique in the comments and tag your spoilers.
