Work Text:

namjoon opens his eyes groggily. only a few seconds before a loud bang echoed through the apartment waking him from his much needed slumber.

he doesn’t have trouble sleeping, quite the contrary. once his head hits the pillow he’s out like a light and sleeps like a rock. however, his workaholic tendencies mixed with self proclaimed deadlines means he doesn’t get nearly as much sleep as he should.

namjoon glances around the room and looks out the window at the sunny midday sky. wait. that’s weird. namjoon quickly picks up the phone and checks the time to see that it is two in the afternoon. he got a whole twelve hours of sleep. he shouldn’t have though, he had set an alarm for six am.

he gets out of the comfort of his bed with a groan and heads toward the source of the noise. he’s not stupid, he knows who the culprits are.

he steps into the kitchen as jimin and taehyung, the culprits in question, are having a slightly heated whisper argument.

“tae,” jimin begins to scold, namjoon knows that tone though. he’s not nearly as aggravated as he’s trying to let on currently. jimin is always too endeared by his boyfriends’ antics to actually be mad. “that could’ve woken him up! he’s not getting enough sleep as is and it’s his birthday. today needs to be special, breaking a cup and getting injured would not be special.”

namjoon was a bit confused by that, not the cup breaking that’s normal when taehyung and jimin are in the kitchen together, but it wasn’t his birthday. it was still august, jungkook’s birthday hasn’t even passed yet.

“yes it would,” tae defends. “it could’ve been a cute little anecdote. and you’re the one who bumped into me anyways so blame yourself. i’m just trying to make lemonade.”

jimin giggles a little bit at taehyung’s argument and breaks his already faulty facade.

“okay, okay. get back to work, we’ll wake him up once everything is ready.” they smile at each other as they get back to work. namjoon smiles too. he loves his boyfriends with everything that he has.

“no need,” namjoon finally decides to voice his presence. “i’m awake. and it’s not even my birthday.”

the two boys turn around and face their oldest boyfriend. taehyung looks shocked and a little confused and jimin just looks endeared.

“it is your birthday you big forgetful baby. check your phone bub.” jimin says with a small smile.

namjoon pats his pockets with furrowed eyebrows and when he comes up empty, looks back at his two boyfriends. tae quickly picks up jimin’s phone off the counter and hands it to him and namjoon’s eyes widen.

it is his birthday.

“but… i… and jungkook… what? how?” namjoon sputters. genuine shock on his features. “my calendar says it’s august and i lost my phone for a few weeks. i didn’t know.” namjoon looks a bit solemn.

“it’s okay baby, your calendar must’ve been flipped to the wrong page. jungkook and jin went on vacation for his birthday anyways so none of us even celebrated it with him, don’t feel bad about that. and you didn’t know joonie, you just found your phone last night, set an alarm, and went to sleep.” jimin begins rubbing namjoon’s arms before he continues speaking.

“we wanted today to be special for you, you’ve been so busy.” taehyung comes up to namjoon too and holds his hands in his.

“i should’ve been finished with my album weeks ago. i should’ve been spending time with you. my entire schedule was messed up.” a guilty look takes residence on namjoon’s face.

“joonie,” taehyung looks him directly in the eyes. “you didn’t know. you can’t know everything no matter how smart you are. you create your own schedule anyways, so take a break. spend the weekend with us. it’ll be okay.”

joon still looks a little upset, but he nods anyway. he does make his own schedule that much is true. so he can take a break, though he will also be sending jungkook a long apology and happy birthday letter.

“why do you guys still put up with me?” namjoon questions as taehyung leads him to the island to sit on a stool and jimin continues cutting up some fruit. he stops though after namjoon’s question processes in his head.

“joonie, baby,” jimin starts as he walks over to his older boyfriend. “if i found you annoying i wouldn’t be dating you. i don’t put up with you, i love you and every little mistake you make, because it’s you.”

“me too joon,” taehyung agrees. “being forgetful doesn’t make you a bad person. neither does being clumsy. it’s just a part of you, and we love every part of you.” jimin nods along. namjoon, however, doesn't look convinced. self deprecation is a real bitch.

“don’t you think it would be better without me though?” namjoon questions. a thought he’s thought to himself on late nights in the studio when his boyfriends are at home together without him. “wouldn’t you rather it just be you two? take me out of the equation completely.”

“no.” tae says bluntly. “i’ve never thought about it. why would i when you two are the best things that have ever happened to me. i’m still shocked that you two fell in love with me and brought me into your relationship. i love you namjoon. i love you and jimin. both of you equally. i can’t even imagine what it would be like without you. whenever you’re not here we miss you like crazy. i don’t want to live without you.”

“me neither joon,” jimin agrees when tae is done with his rant. “life would be bland without you. we love you, you’re our everything.”

namjoon doesn’t know when he started crying, but the tear tracks down his cheeks show that it has been a few minutes. he doesn’t know what he did to deserve them.

he always questioned it. he questioned it when it was just him and jimin. when tae came into their lives. when he began to fall in love with tae even though he still loved jimin. when tae confessed. when they all got together.

what did he do to deserve this? the kindness, the reassurance that he always needs even after being together for two years, the understanding. he must’ve been a saint in his past life to deserve them.

“i love you guys too,” his voice cracks a little bit and there’s a snot puddle forming on his lip, but to taehyung and jimin he couldn’t look more beautiful.

they smother him in reassurances and compliments a bit longer before jimin goes back to cutting the fruits and making breakfast, even though it’s after lunch time.

“today is gonna be the best birthday ever joonie,” taehyung promises as he goes to kiss namjoon’s dimples. namjoon giggles a little bit, taehyung has said that during every birthday they’ve spent together.

“you always say that taetae,” jimin voices namjoon’s thoughts and they all start laughing. jimin begins bringing food to the table and namjoon stomach growls.

they quickly dig in, realizing they were all hungrier then they had realized.

they eat in relative silence. the only sounds are their munching, namjoon’s happy hums when he eats something he really likes, and taehyung occasionally complimenting jimin’s cooking skills.

when they finish taehyung picks up the dishes and starts cleaning up. as he does the dishes jimin pulls out a list titled namjoon’s birthday plans for the bestest birthday ever! the name has taehyung written all over it, but it’s clear that the contents of the list were carefully thought out by both of his boyfriends.

namjoon almost cries again. right then and there. looking at the list and its contents overwhelms him with emotions. if he didn’t believe they cared before he definitely would now.

jimin looks up at namjoon with a smile.

“hey! joonie, you’re not supposed to read the list,” he reprimands. he pouts a bit before continuing, “it’s supposed to be a surprise.”

“he read the list?” taehyung asks as he walks in, also pouting. “bad joonie, you can’t be surprised if you already know the plan,” he reprimands as well.

“i didn’t read much,” namjoon says while putting his hands up in surrender. “just enough to know you turned my alarm off.”

“i- we-“ taehyung splutters.

“i don’t regret it,” jimin interrupts taehyung’s stutters. “you needed the sleep and it’s your birthday. you deserve to get a good night's rest, though it kind of got ruined since someone broke a cup and woke you up.”

“hey!” taehyung says, probably a bit too loudly. “your clumsy ass bumped into me which caused me to drop the glass. we’re both at fault.” taehyung’s voice doesn’t get any quieter, but namjoon is used to it. he’s also used to the mock argument that begins after taehyung’s statement.

after all the time they’ve been together namjoon is used to a lot, including the dumb half arguments that they two get into. they never mean anything though and he’s glad. namjoon doesn’t like real arguments.

he takes the chance to sneak a peak at the list of plans for the day, but his vision is quickly blocked by taehyung as he positions himself clumsily into namjoon’s lap. a common occurrence as well.

“you agree with me right joonie?” he asks from his spot in namjoon’s lap. namjoon nods, but doesn’t even know what he’s agreeing with at this point. the two of them switch conversation topics faster than namjoon can say the word ‘soulmates’.

“you know he wasn’t even listening tae!” jimin exclaims. “and milk does not go before cereal taehyung!”

namjoon won’t lie, he agrees with jimin. however, he knows better then to say so. staying out of the dumb half arguments is the best choice.

they continue on for about ten more minutes before they begin listing off things they love about namjoon. he doesn’t know how they got here, maybe it’s on the list, but he doesn’t mind.

namjoon has always liked praise, especially when it comes from the two of them. he throws in some compliments for them too, but they ignore it, too busy talking about how much they love namjoon and his love for crabs.

“speaking of crabs,” jimin starts. “we have some movies and documentaries to watch, including some about crabs.” jimin gets up and beckons them towards the living room.

namjoon doesn’t need to be told twice. he taps taehyung’s back to get him to get up and when he does namjoon follows and then quickly drags him to the living room.

they end up going through namjoon’s list of movies and documentaries that he’s been wanting to watch, but hasn’t due to working on his mixtape.

they sit on the couch for a few hours. they watch an array of movies and eat namjoon’s favorite snacks.

once it hits around eight jimin gets up and orders food. taehyung begins pulling out board games.

“which do you want to play first?” he asks namjoon as he places them on the coffee table.

“thank you,” namjoon says, not even bothering to answer the question. he doesn’t really care. “thank you for loving me, and making my birthday special. when i was younger we didn’t have money for birthdays so they just didn’t matter. and my parents were always so busy that i ended up not mattering either.” taehyung’s eyes widen and he sits next to namjoon on the couch.

“soon i believed it too. if my parents don’t even love me then why do i matter? what’s the point of anything? i existed, but i wasn’t truly alive. you and jimin helped me learn how to live. you understand me and love me. you celebrate the little things, which my parents never did. did you know they kicked me out?” taehyung shakes his head with wide eyes.

“well they did. i turned sixteen and they decided that was old enough to be alone. i wouldn’t even still be existing if it weren’t for yoongi hyung and his family. you have all done so much for me, but especially you and jimin and i don’t say thank you enough.

“so thank you. thank you for being part of my life and loving me in a way i’ve never been loved before. i love you both so much.”

“we love you too joonie,” jimin says from the doorway, he must’ve entered at some point during namjoon’s rant.

“yes, we do. so much,” taehyung agrees before they’re both launching themselves onto namjoon. they kiss his lips and cheeks, and whisper little compliments. they keep their voices soft and their touches even softer. and namjoon really loves them. so much.

“we have one more surprise,” jimin says after a while. “we were gonna wait until after dinner, but i think we should do it now. i don’t want to wait.”

“me neither,” taehyung agrees.

they pull him up to a sitting position on the couch and taehyung continues to praise namjoon as they wait for jimin to come back from grabbing the surprise.

jimin enters again after a few minutes with a cake box.

“open it,” he says with a smile after placing it down with a smile.

namjoon lifts the lid of the box and is met with a ryan cake. he smiles so wide that his cheeks begin to hurt. before he even registers it he’s letting out a very manly squeal. he wiggles on the couch in happiness and looks at his boyfriends.

“guys i love it, oh my goodness,” he says with the widest smile, dimples on full display. “i love ryan. i love this. thank you, thank you so much. genuinely, for everything.” his eyes soften a bit and so do jimin and tae’s. they look at each other like that for a little bit before jimin turns to taehyung.

“i told you he wouldn’t see it,” jimin says to taehyung, though it’s a bit more on the scolding side.

“well i thought he would,” taehyung defends. “and this is much cuter than a plain box. he loves this.” jimin rolls his eyes.

“i have eyes tae, i can see that he loves the cake, but we should’ve kept it separate. that’s all i’m saying.” jimin turns his attention to namjoon, “joonie, baby, look closer.”

namjoon scrunches his eyebrows together in confusion before scanning the cake again. it’s just ryan’s face, he doesn’t understand what he’s missing. until he tunes in to jimin and taehyung’s whisper argument.

“the cake doesn’t even have hands,” jimin complains. “so your solution is to put it in his mouth?!”

“it seemed like a good idea at the time,” taehyung whines.

namjoon glances back at the cake, specifically at the mouth. there’s a little glint of silver and it takes him a second to realize what it is.

a ring.

namjoon pulls it out and looks at it closer. it’s silver and simple, designed to look like little vines. he loves it so much that he forgets to breathe for a second. he heavily breathes in some air to catch his breath, which also catches jimin’s attention.

“oh shit,” jimin says. “tae he found it. fuck! get the speech.” he hits taehyung’s arm a few times, but taehyung is frozen. “tae the speech.” he urges tightly.

“oh! um…” is all taehyung gets out before violently blushing and freezing again.

and namjoon. namjoon is confused. it’s just a ring, he doesn’t get it and he says as much.

“shit,” jimin says. “oh joonie, i’m so sorry we had a plan. fuck.” for some reason this seems to pull tae out of his frozen state and he begins talking.

“we love you so much, and we had a whole plan, this was gonna be a whole thing. you were gonna see the ring immediately and i’d pull out the speech and jimin would get down on one knee, i would’ve too but i have bad knees from that injury a year ago. and we were gonna propose to you and tell you a bunch of lovey dovey things and you were gonna fall in love with us more and want to marry us and it would’ve been perfect.” taehyung rushes out. his words are super clumped together and pretty much unintelligible.

“huh,” namjoon says.

taehyung explains their whole plan. how they wanted to propose to him and marry him, even if they couldn’t be legally married. how they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together with him. and namjoon is shocked.

“you can say no,” jimin says. “we can’t even actually get married so it’s understandable if you don’t want to. but we thought it would be nice and we could have a little ceremony.”

namjoon is overwhelmed. he can feel tears in his eyes.

this is the best birthday ever.

“yes,” namjoon says after a while. a tear slips out of his eyes, but he ignores it. “of course i want to marry you. i want the ring, a little ceremony, and everything else you have to offer. i love you two so much. i would never say no.”

jimin and taehyung begin to cry too. they all cuddle close together. passing kisses and compliments.

namjoon is in his favorite place in the entire world, which is between his two favorite people.

today is the best day ever.
