Chapter Text
"Hello, this is Mariana from the foster care department of Social Services. Am I speaking with Miles Edgeworth or Phoenix Wright?
"Hello Mariana, this is Phoenix Wright, how may I help you today?'
"Well, Mr. Wright I have some very exciting news to share with you! Is your partner around by any chance?"
"He is actually right next to me, let me put you on speaker."
"Hello Mrs. Mariana, this is Miles Edgeworth, I was told that you have some news to share with the two of us?
"Yes! It seems like we have a child who I think would fit very well in your household."
"Really!" Phoenix said giddily.
"Yes, his name is Apollo Justice, he is 11 years old. We, unfortunately, have been unsuccessful in determining any kind of kinship. It seems that he lived abroad until he was about 9 which is when he was placed into the foster care system. Since then he has jumped around with a few families but has not found one that stuck."
"If that's the case what makes you believe he is a good fit for the two of us?" Miles' asked. They had just finished all of the qualifications for becoming foster parents just a few weeks ago.
"I'm glad you asked Mr. Edgeworth. That is because he mentioned to his previous foster parents that he wants to become an attorney when he grows up."
"I can send you over his file with more information about him. If you wish to continue, we can set up a time for the two of you to meet him once you have discussed it."
Miles and Phoenix just stared into each other's eyes knowing exactly what the other man was thinking. There was no need to discuss it, if there was a child who was passionate about law there would be no better place than the Edgeworth-Wright household.
In unison, they said, "When can we meet him?"
Apollo was trying to read some unremarkable book he picked up off the shelf of the state's foster home where he had been staying in for the past few weeks. It was nothing Apollo wasn't used to he had been in places like this before several times. To him, they all looked the same. Sad kids, uncomfortable beds, bad food, cramped spaces, and never anything to play with. Not that Apollo wanted to play with anything or anyone. He didn't really see the point of making friends when inevitably one of them would be taken away. So, he resided himself to reading whatever book he could find that day. He was sitting in the reading area when the lady who was appointed to his case came over to him and kneeled to match his eye level.
"Hi Apollo, I have some nice people who are really excited to meet you would you like to meet them?"
"I don't know…"
"They're both attorneys and bet they would love to talk to you about the law."
Apollo's face instantly brightened at the thought of being able to talk to a real practicing attorney.
"Alright!" His voice was so loud that some of the other kids started to stare at him.
The two walked away to the meeting area. A place where Apollo usually disliked; he knew when prospective parents disliked him or where on the fence about him. However, this time he was eager to meet the two lawyers, his mind filling with questions as he followed the women. Once he arrived in the room, he was surprised to find two men sitting at the table. One was in a bright blue suit with very spikey hair and the other is in a reddish suite with some frilly thing around his neck. So this is what American lawyers look like…
Apollo took a seat opposite the man in the red suit since he was closest to him and because red was his favorite color, directly next to him was the lady who now had paper and pen.
"Hello Apollo, I'm Miles Edgeworth but you can call me Miles." Offering him a welcoming smile.
"And I'm Phoenix Wright, you can just call me Phoenix or Nick if you prefer." His smile was a lot larger than the other man's but just as welcoming. Apollo stared at the two of them, processing their expressions before speaking.
"Is it true?!" Apollo asked shyly. "Is what true?" Phoenix replied looking a little puzzled.
"That your both attorneys?" this time with more energy in his voice.
"Ahh yes we both are, I heard that you want to be an attorney when you grow up," Miles responded also with a bit of enthusiasm in his voice.
"I sure do!" Apollo practically shouted taking the two men by surprise.
"It's not every day we get to meet someone so young let alone as passionate about the law as we are," Phoenix said, laughing with the same level of excitement as the small boy across from him.
Apollo brought his arms up to chest his small hands making fists, "I'm going to grow up and become an attorney and help out people just like you guys!" Miles' smile grew into a grin hearing him say those words.
"If you're going to become an attorney, you're going to need a badge." Said Miles as he reached into his pocket.
"A badge? I thought only police officers need a badge," he questioned.
"Ah that's true police officers need badges but so do trial attorneys."
"That's right, you can’t help put the bad guys away with one," said Phoenix.
"Would you like to see one Apollo?" Miles asked grin still glued on his face.
"Yes please!" Apollo squealed again although this time Miles and Phoenix were prepared for it.
Miles took the small prosecutor's badge out of his pocket and placed it on the table for Apollo to see.
"This is a prosecutors' badge, I always keep in on me so in case people need to verify I'm a prosecutor I can show them this," Miles stated with a bit of pride in his voice. Apollo looked at it carefully. "C-can I touch it?" Apollo asked his voiced softer than before. "You may, but you must promise to be very careful."
"I promise," Apollo said as he nodded his head in confirmation. Carefully picking up the shiny badge, holding it in his small hands. Observing how the light bounced off the shiny red stone in the middle. He turned it around "what are these numbers on the back?"
"That is my attorneys' number, it is so that if my badge was to ever get lost or stolen it can be traced back to me."
Apollo looked up at Phoenix and asked, "Do you have a badge too?" eyes filled with brightness.
"Of course! Here." And phoenix took off his own badge and placed it in Apollo's hands. Just like with Miles' badge he carefully studied it. Looking at the gold of the badge and the small scale in the middle.
"How come yours is different?"
"That's because I'm a defense attorney. It's not as shiny as the prosecutions badge but I still get my own number and everything." offering the child a goofy grin.
Apollo just looked in awe as he compared the two badges. Miles and Phoenix sat across watching him with pure joy in their eyes.
"Thank you" and Apollo placed the badges back on the table, he looked up at the two of them smiling larger than he had in an awfully long time.
"Apollo, it's time to say goodbye to Miles and Phoenix," said the lady next to him. He looked up at her his smile already gone " No please just a few more minutes!"
" I'm sorry but…" he felt a hand place on top of his "Apollo don't worry we will have plenty of time to talk later." Miles and Phoenix had moved closer together as they both leaned in closer their faces comforted Apollo.
"You promise?" Apollo asked meekly. "We promise"
"Okay" the four of them got up from the table "Goodbye Mr. Miles and Mr. Phoenix," Apollo said with disappointment in his voice, now looking down at the floor.
"Hey, there's no need to say goodbye we promised we would see you again, remember?" Phoenix was kneeling to match Apollo's eye level. Miles following his partner and knelt next to him. "How about 'see you soon?" said miles cheeks red from smiling for so long.
"Okay, See you soon!" with the smile back on his face the three of them chuckled softly with each other.
