Kaminari’s hands were shaking and he dropped his phone but he felt better. He still couldn’t breathe and he still felt like he was dying, but this made it feel better.
He dug his fingers into his thighs and scratched, leaving angry red marks. He did it again and again, each time he felt a little bit better.
The sting brought him back to himself, but it didn’t slow his breathing or stop his shaking hands. It did bring tears to his eyes, which was a relief. Constantly feeling like you’re about to cry is exhausting.
A little pinprick of blood drew in one of the scratches his fingernails made. He didn’t notice it.
His door opened. Sero rushed inside. Kaminari was too busy scratching and trying to breathe to notice him.
Sero froze and took in what he saw before him. Kaminari, sitting on the floor, scratching his thighs deeply and borderline hyperventilating. Wait no, he was hyperventilating.
“Oh my god,” Sero collapsed on his knees in front of Kaminari and grabbed his hands. Kaminari looked at him with frightened eyes and tried to fight him.
Kaminari tried to tug his hands back and get away from Sero, but Sero was surprisingly strong. He didn’t know why Sero was in his room or what the fuck is happening to me oh my god oh god I’m going to die I can’t breathe oh god I can’t breathe I’m choking.
“Kam—Denki! Denki, breathe,” Sero inhaled and exhaled, “Come on, dude, breathe with me. Please, Denki. Breathe.”
Kaminari got his hands free and hid his face in his hands. Sero being there was starting to ease the anxiety away. Well, more of the embarrassment from Sero seeing him like this overpowered whatever the hell was happening.
Sero stayed beside him, inhaling and exhaling. At last, the choking sensation was gone and Kaminari was able to breathe.
“How are you feeling?” Sero asked quietly.
Kaminari’s tongue felt gross and numb in his mouth, and speaking was hard, but he tried anyway, “Fine.”
“Denki,” Sero whispered.
“I don’t know,” Kaminari answered truthfully. He dropped his head and caught sight of the marks on his thighs. His shorts covered some, but most were visible. They were hard to look at. He hoped they would be gone by morning.
“Why would you do that to yourself?” Sero asked, his voice broke.
“It… it made me feel better,” Kaminari said. He looked at his hands. He hadn’t cut his fingernails in a while, so that was how he was able to make such scratches.
“Can you promise me something please?” Sero took Kaminari’s hands again, but this time gently, and loose enough for Kaminari to take his hands back if he wanted. He rubbed Kaminari’s fingers with his thumbs, “Please don’t hurt yourself anymore.”
“That’s kind of hard to promise. I mean, we are becoming heroes,” Kaminari tried to joke. It hurt.
“Denki,” Sero said. It hurt Kaminari even more to hear Sero’s voice like that.
“Okay,” Kaminari said, “I promise.” He pulled his hands back to his lap.
They were silent for several moments.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Sero asked.
“I don’t even know what or why that happened,” Kaminari said, “If there is anything to talk about, I don’t know what it is.”
“Okay,” Sero said, “Just… if that happens again or if you feel anxious again, you’ll talk to me, right? Or the others?”
Kaminari nodded. It didn’t mean anything.
“Or maybe you could talk to Aizawa or Mic or Midnight? Or someone who could actually help,” Sero spoke quietly. He leaned his back against the wall.
“Wait. What about the test tomorrow? You’re going to be tired,” Kaminari said.
“Fuck the test,” Sero said, “You’ll be tired too.”
Kaminari sighed, “Why are you up, anyway? And why did you come to my room? Was I being loud?”
“No, Denki, your texts. My phone buzzed and I woke up and saw your texts,” Sero looked at him, puzzled.
“I should delete those before anyone else sees them,” Kaminari said.
“Wait. You said it’s happening again in your text. Is that what you deleted earlier?” Sero leaned forward.
“You should go to sleep,” Kaminari replied.
