Mika remembers when Krul used to try to be motherly. She'd let him cry and she pet his head and called him her Sweet Pet. And for him that was the only good kind of physical contact he got after his family's death.
She once told him something he refused to acknowledge at the time, when he was crying about Yuu, "Only fools fall in love." Of course she called him an endearing name after it to calm him, Don't cry dear, you'll only waste tears.
Even though it was sick, Krul was the closest thing to mother he remembered having.
Mika had no one but the memory of people who had either forgotten about him or died and Krul... Krul was searching for something that at the time only Mika could substitute. She never said who but on his birthdays she'd let him comb her hair or she'd just simply fake-sleep in Mika's lap.
She never cried like Mika did but she always seemed content after the physical contact they had with each other. She'd pet his hair whenever he cried, even at times called him nicknames that he easily knew weren't for him.
They were family in their own twisted way. For them Family was someone you wanted to protect. Mika would've protected Krul with his life no matter how much other's would've judged him for it and Krul would do the same. She had and now could be dead because of Mika.
Just one more person the boy would have to add to his list of people he couldn't protect.
That's why he promised himself Yuu wouldn't be apart of that list.
He would protect him until his final breath.
And seeing those looks on her face, in her eyes. The look she sent towards the only person who could be alive that was his family.
His Yuu-Chan.
The looks made his heart, that beat slower than a human's, break. Because Mika knew she was Yuu's family now. Mika knew Yuu would choose her over him.
Because Mika was just a filthy vampire now.
He wasn't Yuu's Mika anymore.
And that hurt more than the thought of dying. But that was okay. It was okay because he was fine watching Yuu be happy now. At first he thought they were using him but then he saw the lovesick look in her eyes.
He saw that look in mirrors.
And Mika knew if Yuu was happy with even one of them for the rest of his life then Mika would do anything to protect them. To stay by Yuu's side even as a silent observer.
He was fine being filth as long as Yuu kept him.
As long Yuu was okay with a fake Mika, a disgusting bloodsucking version of Mika.
He would stay with Yuu as long as he could.
He would always make sure Yuu was happy and safe because Yuu was his world. His sunshine.
The only thing that kept him going for years.
That's why he was going to warn her. He was going to tell her what he already knew, if she gave up then she didn't deserve Yuu-Chan's love in the first place.
He watches as Shinoa held Yuu's hand as he slept so peacefully you would never have guessed that just a few days ago he had stabbed himself and released an Angel of Mass Destruction. As he walked in he made his footsteps loud and clear and Shinoa immediately let go of his hand frantically.
If Mika wasn't a Vampire he wouldn't have seen or suspected anything.
But he was one.
The words that came out of his mouth was almost painful, he only ever spoke to Krul who understood him without many words or Ferid whom he would usually be rude to.
"You're a fool."
So what if he was socially awkward, he reveled in it when the girl flinched almost like he had burned her. She still kept her composure and challenged him in one look while saying a few joking words, "Mika I'm sure I haven't done anything Yuu like so what could I possibly be doing wrong."
Mika raised one eyebrow and walked over to the two. He looked over Yuu's sleeping form with a rather soft look in his eyes and then turned to the girl. His expression much stronger. "Only fools fall in love, especially with an even bigger idiot."
The girl only laughed, "Oh I know, Yuu's an oblivious idiot. He'll probably never notice even if I randomly kissed him," he tensed at that but shrugged. "Yuu-Chan sees what he wants to." He went to sit beside the boy but froze when he heard Shinoa, her voice bland and lacking of much emotion, "Is that why he's keeping you? He thinks you're still his family and not just a Vampire?"
He almost laughed in self-loathing. His softly petted Yuu's face, "Yuu-Chan sees me as I was, I'll always love him for it." He rested his head next to Yuu's hand. "You're wrong you know.." Shinoa broke his thought process, "You seem like a pretty decent person to me Mika-Chan."
She gave him such a bright smile, got up and went to him. She brought him up and held his hands in hers and grinned even further.
"Let's be fools together Mika. Let's be the two fools to fall in love with the one idiot we probably shouldn't have."
He didn't expect this at all. He slowly nodded and let go of her hands from the comforting grip. She stepped back and did a curtsey, "Young Sir, I swear from now on I will help you get your Yuu! I'll be by your side! Will you continue to be Yuu's family and join ours?" She held out her hand to him.
Mika felt a small smile coming on to his face and before he knew it he started laughing, "You're absolutely... ridiculous!" But even after when he stopped laughing he bowed and slowly put his hand into hers, "I promise I'll try to become apart of your family, I'll promise I'll continue to protect Yuu."
He pulled Shinoa to her and led her silently to Yuu's side, "I promise I'll try to help Yuu fall in love with you."
And Shinoa would never tell anyone she started crying right then and there.
