Work Text:

The second the Discount Pichu had grabbed Izuku’s notebook while he wasn’t paying attention talking to Uraraka and Shinsou, Katsuki called across the living room, “Oi, give that back.”

Kaminari froze as he went to open the book.

Izuku’s head whipped around and caught sight of the book in his hands. Face dropped white, and he locked up. Staring at the notebook.

Katsuki glared at Kaminari until he set the notebook down.

Izuku snatched it back, holding it close. Still looking a hair breath away from a panic attack, eyes slightly glassy and distant.

“Eh, I just wanted to see,” Kaminari pouted.

Katsuki growled, “Ask then dipshit.”

Distracted by the idiot, he didn’t catch in time, but Uraraka touched Izuku’s shoulder, “are you okay?”

Izuku had grabbed her hand, as soon as she touched him, and wrenched away from him, and once he realized it was her with a horrified look, he bolted, leaving sparks of green and shock in his wake.

Katsuki closed his eyes as guilt burned in his gut. Opening them he looked at Izuku’s friends, and his own dumbasses all looking worried and like they wanted to chase after Izuku.

“Alright you fuckers, open your ears, and burn these two things into your mush sauce you call brains,” he ordered, “don’t touch his notebooks without fucking asking, and for fuck sakes don’t fucking touch him when he has a flashback. You’re fucking lucky he didn’t break either of you,” Katsuki growled at Kaminari and Uraraka.

They both cringed but nodded in understanding.

“Good, learn from this,” Katsuki nodded and turned on his heel and began to walk away, he needed to check on Izuku.

Shinsou called after him, “How did you know?”

Katsuki didn’t turn around, “How do you think, Eyebags?” and he walked over and took the stairs two by two.

He passed his floor, making his way to the top floor, and bypassed Izuku’s room, instead of walking up the stairs to the roof, finding Izuku leaning against the roof door curl into himself.

He flopped himself beside him, staring up at the inclined roof, “You know, the longer we are in UA the more I realize how shitty of a person I was too you.”

“You didn’t know better,” Izuku mumbled into his knees. Katsuki jolted when Izuku leaned in Katsuki’s side but didn’t mention it or move away.

Katsuki snorted, “Don’t negate the shit I put you through. Yeah, society is fucked, but doesn’t mean I had to be, I could have chosen better. I mean fuck, it’s not like I was a dumb shit,” he laughed bitterly.

“You can be a little dumb,” Izuku tilted his head back to tease him, but before Katsuki could retaliate, Izuku’s face turned serious continuing, “Katsuki, every adult and I mean even my mom, treated me as either fragile, or broken, that either had to be coddled, or gotten rid of. Then they all treated you like you were perfect hero material because of your quirk, no matter what you did. You were a kid, how were you supposed to know they weren’t right, they taught us to trust adults.”

“Fucking bullshit,” Katsuki grumbled, but he couldn’t really argue with Izuku’s point.

Izuku rolled his eyes and knocked shoulders, “We will change it okay.”

“Yeah, we will,” Katsuki agreed.

They would because they were both going to be the heroes they needed as kids.
