Chapter 1: Prologue: A Starbright Goose

Chapter Text

The sun burned down across the vast New Mexico sands, with endless azure blue stretching across the skies, punctuated by the occasional fluff of cumulus.

Among the golden dunes and spiky vegetation, however, was a flash of brilliant white. Strutting about the burning sands as if they affected her none was a beautiful, plump goose.

Far from any highway or even body of water, she happened upon what looked like a handful of abandoned warehouses. Goose turned her head in confusion; why did empty warehouses have a security guard?

A corpulent yet cheery fellow, the man whistled tunelessly as he spun a ring of keys about his finger. Goose waddled across slippery sands, making tracks towards the security guard. He wasn’t even looking where he was going, the silly thing. Just pacing back and forth to nowhere in particular.

Goose blinked. She loosed a sharp honk and watched as a flinch rippled through the security guard’s entire body. He yelped in surprise and dropped his keys, and Goose just strolled right past him.

By the time the security guard had picked up his keys and shouted after her, Goose had disappeared into the depths of the factory.

It was very different inside. Not only was there air conditioning, which was odd for an abandoned factory, but also a lot of very expensive looking machines. Goose wandered through tunnels and past fancy offices, where men and women in overalls paid her no attention.

Down the end of a hallway was an important looking room. There were even more machines, plus lots of colourful, flashing lights.

Goose blinked brightly as a man ambled past her, with a cigar in one hand and what looked like a phone made out of lego in the other. She honked, and he dropped both, scrambling for the cigar instead of the phone. Goose seized her chance and plucked it from the ground, staggering off into another room.

Lots of other smartly dressed people gasped in surprise as Goose charged through. She slipped under a slowly closing door. Another man, dressed entirely in white, was walking slowly towards the centre. Goose charged ahead of the man, bowling him over on the way. She flapped in surprise as an all-encompassing swathe of bright blue light took over her body…
