Work Text:

Sitting against the backboard of a bed isn’t the most comfortable thing in the world, but Hinako couldn’t be bothered to move. She hardly paid attention to the soreness in her back from leaning against the hard wood. Her dull eyes remained focused on the candle that sat on her window sill. Well, it seemed more like the remnants of a candle. The wax had melted down into a puddle below the wick, which threatened to burn out any second. As she stared at the pitiful remains of what used to be a candle, thoughts swam through Hinako’s head. Bad thoughts. Thoughts she tried her hardest to bury deep down, but still managed to crawl into her mind at night. Soon enough the wick burned out and she was left in the dark, leaving her feeling nothing but emptiness.

She was suddenly pulled from her thoughts when she heard a faint buzzing. The girl turned to see her phone screen lit up. As she reached for her phone, she glanced at the digital clock that sat on her bedside table. It read 2:09am.

When she opened her phone, she was surprised to see she received a text from her best friend, Kanna.

“What the hell is she doing up so late..?” the pink haired girl mumbled to herself as she slid down from leaning against the bed board to actually laying on her bed. Hinako opened the message,

“Hey Hinako!(´ ᴗ`✿) If you’re up, I was wondering if you could call me? Only if you feel like it though! Thank you!!♡(◕ᗜ◕✿)”

She smiled at the message, Kanna had a habit of being very decorative in her texts. “Cute.” Hinako whispered. She typed back a very thoughtful response,

“K”

Shortly after texting her back, she called her friend. She put the phone on speaker, it didn’t really matter how loud she was since her parents weren’t home that night. Kanna picked up rather quickly, “Hinako!!” The green haired girl yelled. She seemed excited. “Kanna.” the other replied. Even though her voice seemed dull, she was also happy to have someone to talk to, especially since it was Kanna.

“Why up so late? Doesn’t your sister want you to go to bed early on Sundays?” Hinako asked shortly after. The green haired girl took a second to respond, “Well, since it’s a holiday tomorrow and we don’t have school, Kugie told Kanna- oh oops. What I meant was Kugie told *me* that *I* could be up late.” The pinkette nodded,

“That’s right. I forgot we had tomorrow off.”

“Mhm! And I just really couldn’t sleep. And I knew Hinako stays up a lot. So I didn’t think you’d mind me texting you.”

“Oh, yeah, not at all. I was thinking about you not too long ago, actually. I missed you.”

Hinako let the words slip without thinking. Her face heated up as soon as she realized what she had said. “Ah- I didn’t mean it like that! I-I…” Though she wasn’t even face to face with her best friend, the pinkette covered her face in embarrassment.

“O-Oh! No, that’s okay, Hinako!! That’s really sweet..”

Both girls went silent. Hinako’s face remained buried in her hands. As she sat there silently she thought about the other. Was Kanna just as embarrassed as her? Was she also red as a tomato? Did she even take what Hinako had said the same way she did? …..

The pinkette could feel her face getting redder. Slowly she dragged her hands away from her face.

There’s no way she likes you back.

She is clearly way out of your league.

That’s what Hinako thought, anyway.

Kanna was such a genuine person, light basically radiated off of her. She was angelic.

The complete opposite of Hinako.

She was dull. Everywhere she went she carried a heavy atmosphere around with her. Though, she couldn’t really help it.

Hinako had always wondered why the other girl was so hellbent on hanging out with her, when she was obviously just dead weight. Kanna could easily become friends with anyone. She could be one of the most liked girls in school if she wanted too. But for some reason, Kanna enjoyed Hinako’s company more than anyone else’s.

Hinako would never never never, say this to Kanna’s face but..

She was thankful she was persistent about being friends. She didn’t know where she would be without Kanna. She was the one thing that kept Hinako from falling into utter dejection.

“..Hinako? Are you still there?”

Oh. Hinako had almost completely forgotten. She was still on the phone with Kanna.

“Yeah, yeah I am. Sorry I was just thinking.”

“No, don’t apologize! You’re fine!”

Hinako could imagine the reassuring smile Kanna was most likely giving right now in perfect detail. She had seen it so many times before, but still even just thinking about her smile made the pinkette’s stomach fill with butterflies.

“Thank you, Kanna… So, anyways, what’re your plans for tomorrow? Since we have the day off from school, and all.”

“Oh! Well, Shin is gonna visit home for the day! And Kugie is bringing her girlfriend over for dinner! You’ve met Ryoko before, haven’t you?”

“I think so. She’s Sara and Tazuna’s friend, right?”

“Mhm! What are you gonna do, Hinako?”

“Oh, um.. I doubt anything interesting. My parents are out of town, so I’ll probably just sit at home and watch TV or something.”

Hinako frowned. She was just now realizing how miserable her life really was.

“Y’know Hinako, if you wanna come over tomorrow you can. Maybe you could spend the night too!”

“I- Kanna, are you sure? I don’t wanna bother you or your family. Plus are you sure your parents wouldn’t mind?”

“Psssh, are you serious? You know my parents never mind when you’re over. And plus Kugie and Shin have basically adopted you! So..?”

The pinkette smiled to herself.

“Thank you, Kanna, I’d love to come.”

“Yay!!!! This is gonna be so fun, I can’t wait to see you!!”

Hinako could feel her face starting to burn up again. Kanna was so considerate and warm towards Hinako, no matter the situation. No one could cheer Hinako up like her kind-hearted best friend.

“Me too.”
