The sweet scent of honey glazed bread and vanilla icing cakes make your job the best and worst job in the world, simultaneously. On one hand, getting to smell such wonderful scents was a joy. But on the other, it became frustrating when you couldn’t scarf down the shop’s whole inventory. But as time had gone on, you got used to it. What else did you like about your job? Well, it had to be the customers. People of all kinds came to you for the same purpose and nothing warmed your heart more than seeing the happy smiles on their faces.
Actually, that was a lie. Because there was one thing- one person, actually- who also warmed your heart: Gojo Satoru. He gave you the worst case of butterflies you had ever felt.
He was an odd-looking fellow (you still don’t know how he sees through his mask). His hair, china white, and fraying out from the top of the mask. A dark uniform that he always wore, which you couldn’t place where it was from. You didn’t know what to make of him, at first. He ordered a slice of coffee cake and he would pay extra for some icing on top. It was apparent on that first day, he had a terrible sweet-tooth. Your suspicions were confirmed when he waltzed into your shop again, and again... and again. He was your most regular customer. And with each visit, you got to know him a little better. And each visit, he would make a different, extra sweet request.
It came to a point where you could admit to yourself. You liked him, had s crush on your mysterious customer. And from then on, you were determined to impress him. Red bean cookies, matcha jelly rolls, marshmallow mochi, mousse pastries, the list went on. New and unique creations just for Gojo.
He walked into the bakery, bell tinkling a sweet tune to his arrival. You looked up and smiled, your chest lightening at his presence. It felt like fluffy clouds and cherubs were floating about inside you. “Hi, Gojo.”
He smiled back at you, and you could feel his eyes on you. Then he cocked his chin up, facing the chalkboard menu that hung above your head.
“Oh! wait- don’t order.”
“Why not?”
You felt your face go warm, “I made something special for you. Um, it’s not on the menu.” you scurried off into the kitchen before you could say anything embarrassing.
Coming back, you set a delicately crafted cake on the counter. It was a chocolate cake with a creme-filled center, buttermilk frosting and cinnamon sprinkled on top. You had spent all night on this cake, decorating it with intricate frosting loops and dolloped flowers and sugar pearls.
“Oh wow-” his mouth hung open, and you wished you could have seen the look in his eyes.
“Uh, do you like it?” You were so terribly afraid he would hate it. What if he thought it was too much? What if he thought too much into this? What if you didn't think enough about what this gesture might mean? Oh no, what if-
“Thank you so much, y/n.” he leaned over the counter, easily with how much taller he was. His face brought inches from your own.
You gasped and nodded quickly, “You’re welcome- I- y- you don’t have to pay anything! It’s a thank you for being my best customer!” you bowed low, both out of formality and to not be so close, tempted to kiss his pretty lips.
Gojo chuckled, “I feel bad, eating this all to myself. You obviously worked so hard on it.”
You raised a brow, looking up at him curiously.
“Why don’t we share it?” Gojo pushed the cake across the counter to you, “I doubt it’ll be as sweet as you, though.”
Your whole face was burning and the butterflies had erupted in full force. “I- well, um, I would love to!” you burst out, quickly covering your mouth after. Why was it so hard to keep your composure around him?
“Then it’s a date!” Gojo cheered, clapping his hands together.
He whipped his phone out of his pocket, raising it to take a selfie, raising a peace sign, “I have to tell Fushiguro!” then snapped a bunch of photos of the cake.
You walked around the counter so you stood before Gojo, looking up at him through your lashes. He slipped his phone back into his pocket, his hand then reaching out to hold your own. Thumb gently rubbing over your knuckles.
“You know, I like you a lot Gojo.”
“Because I tip well?”
“Ha! That’s part of it. It helps that you’re handsome, too.” you winked at him, slipping from his grasp and strutting to the door.
You flipped the sign to ‘CLOSED’.
