Notes:

The first few chapters are named based off the song: So Am I Artist: Ava Max

Of course, I do not own any of the characters, only the plot. My Hero Academia is a manga created by Kohei Horikoshi.

There will be no swearing in this book. I realize this might ruin Bakugo Katsuki's character, as he swears a lot. But, I just don't really want to write anyone swearing.

Chapter 1: Do You Ever Feel Like a Misfit?

Chapter Text

Izuku Midoryia might as well be one of the most unlucky people in the whole world. Okay maybe not, but that’s what he always felt like. And why does Izuku claim he is so “unlucky”? Well, it all started when he was four years old, the day he learned what his quirk was, or lack thereof.

Izuku was four years old when his mom took him to the quirk doctors. Izuku was so excited.
“Mom, mom!” Little Izuku shouted, “What quirk do you think I’ll get?”
Inko stared at her son lovingly, little did Izuku know, but this would be one of the last moments Inko would ever look at him with such kind eyes. “I don’t know, dear.”
“I hope it’s as cool as Kacchan’s, or as powerful as All Might’s!” Izuku exclaimed in excitement.
Inko ruffled Izuku’s fluffy head of hair. “We’ll see.”
Later at the quirk doctors (not sure if it’s what the place was called, but you know what that's what I’m gonna call it) Izuku felt like he had been hit with a ton of bricks when the doctor said those two horrid words.
“I’m so sorry, Mrs. Midoriya, but your son...he’s quirkless.”
Inko went stiff. “Excuse me? Could you please repeat that?”
The doctor sighed. “I am so sorry, but your son is quirkless.”
Izuku just stared at the ground in shock.

After returning home, Inko still hadn’t said a word to her son, who looked miserable.
“Mom.” Izuku spoke softly.
Inko took a deep breath. “Yes, Izu?”
“Can,” Izuku choked down a sob. “Can...can I still be a hero?”
Inko stiffened. “I...I don’t think so, Izu.”
Things only got worse.

After Inko told her husband that Izuku was quirkless, it would be an understatement to say that Hisashi was mad. He had never been the greatest father, he yelled a lot, and he could be very harsh. He never did hit Izuku or Inko, but sometimes they wondered if he would. A few days later, Hisashi left, leaving an envelope of money and a short note.

Inko,

I cannot stay knowing that our son is worthless. I will get nothing from him. I think I’ll miss you at least. Too bad.

Hisashi

Inko burst into tears. After that everything went downhill.

The next day Izuku was going to meet Kacchan at the park. And he was going to tell him that he was quirkless. Kacchan was his best friend, he would not turn on Izuku. Right?

“Hey, Izuku!” Katsuki ran up to meet his best friend.
“H-hey Kacchan.” Izuku spoke quietly.
“What wrong, nerd?” Katsuki spoke roughly. “Didn’t you get your quirk? What is it?”
Izuku shrank beneath Katsuki’s intimidating gaze. “Kacchan, I...I’m quirkless…”
“Huh? Didn’t hear ya nerd. Speak up!”
“I-I’m, QUIRKLESS!” Izuku yelled.
Katsuki took a step back. “What?”
Izuku just started to cry.
“So you can’t be a hero with me?” Katsuki asked, starting to get angry.
Izuku shook his head in shame. “I-I’m so sorry.”
“So you’re just a Deku then.”
Izuku looked up in shock. “W-what?”
“Deku means useless.” Katsuki hissed.
“I-I’m not useless.” Izuku mumbled, almost unsure himself.
“Ttc, don’t talk to me anymore, Deku.” Katsuki spun around, heading back towards his house, leaving Izuku in tears.

A few weeks went by, and Inko started acting strange. She would consistently forget to make meals, well, except for herself. And she no longer spent time with Izuku. Izuku was confused. He wondered if she was angry at him. What had he done? He soon got used to doing everything by himself. Making food, doing laundry, and cleaning the house. Inko spent most of her time either working, or alone in her room. Izuku tried to catch her attention, but failed. And to top it off, he was constantly getting bullied by his ex-bestfriend and his faithful followers.

It’s been ten years, and everything is still the same, no better, and no worse. I wonder. Izuku thought to himself. I wonder if life will get easier. I wonder, will I ever be a hero?
