Work Text:
I loved rainy days. Especially when I was home with not much to do other than to relax.
That day was one of those days. It was Sunday and it was pouring outside. The perfect excuse to curl up with a cup of tea in one hand and a book in another or to be a couch potato. Luckily, neither Rengoku nor I had any plans that afternoon.
We were finishing doing the dishes when suddenly, Rengoku spoke.
"What do you think of watching a film or something else? It's quite chilly today which is perfect for cuddling" he said, putting away the dishes.
I felt my cheeks start to burn.
'How can he say such things with a straight face?' I thought as I felt my brain shut down from both giddiness and embarrassment.
I cleared my throat.
"Well... that's a good point. What do you want to watch then?"
Rengoku hummed softly, picking up his phone.
"Let me check our list."
Some time ago, he had created a list of films, anime and tv shows for us to watch together. Once in a while, we would add more things. Of course that, ever since he created the list, we had already watched quite a decent number of films and shows but it was still a pretty long list.
Thinking about it always made me smile. Suddenly, Rengoku's voice brought me back to reality. I stood closer to him, taking a look at the list.
"There's BNHA, Gintama, 5 Centimetres per Second, BoJack Horseman. It depends on our mood." He turned to look at me. "What do you feel like watching?"
"I think I'm in the mood to laugh. I haven't watched something light and funny in a hot minute. From what I've heard, Gintama is pretty funny."
"It's decided then. I'd do anything to hear your cute laugh."
Rengoku's laughter filled the air.
"You're talking as if you don't hear me laugh often" I pouted, looking away from him to hide my flushness.
He brought his right hand to my chin, softly making me look into his eyes, leaning in close enough for me to feel his breath against my lips.
"Often is not enough." he whispered "I'd listen to you laugh anytime, everyday. But it's better when I'm the one who makes it happen."
He pulled away chuckling which made him unconsciously close his eyes.
I shook my head.
'How can this man be so straightforward? I WANT TO SCREAM!!'
I finished putting away the last plate.
"Well then, let's prepare everything. But first, let's not forget about snacks."
I could see the excitement in Rengoku's eyes at the mention of snacks.
"That's something we absolutely cannot forget! Let's make some popcorn. We also have candies and chocolates we bought recently!" He grinned at me.
"Ah, you know chocolate is my weakness, Kyojuro." I smirked back at him.
"Alright, I'll make the popcorn."
"And I will prepare the living room." I said as I took off my apron.
"The living room?" Rengoku gave me a quizzed look.
I took a step forward towards him and I brought my index finger to his lips.
"Yes, so don't even think of peeking. I'll be closing the door."
Rengoku grabbed my hand, planting a gentle kiss.
"I'll look forward to it."
I already had in mind what I wanted to do.
First, I'd need a really big comfy blanket. Fortunately we had one stored in our wardrobe so I went to our bedroom to fetch it. I'd also need to carefully arrange the fluffy sofa pillows in the comfiest way. Then, I'd lit some scented candles. Their sweetness would only make the ambience cosier.
I tried to be as quick as possible.
I turned on the television and our laptop. Everything was already connected so I only had to log in on the website we use to watch anime and select episode one of Gintama.
Lastly, the living room light bulbs were of that kind that let you change its colour and luminosity so I opted for a soft orange lighting.
I quickly roamed the room as my lips curled up in a grin.
'Heh. Perfect.'
I headed to the kitchen's door. Before I opened it, the sweet smell of hot chocolate and popcorn hit my nose. I slowly opened the door and paused for a moment so I could admire Rengoku's broad shoulders and back. Then I spoke.
"How are our snacks, Kyojuro?"
He turned to me, beaming. His smile never failed to warm my heart...and my cheeks.
"They're ready! I just need to get a tray"
"Oh, I'll get it for you!" I took a look at the cabinets. "Now...where did we put them?"
I scratched my head. I couldn't remember the last time we had used them.
Rengoku chuckled.
"It's over there." he pointed at one of the top cabinets.
'Oh no.' I sighed. Being short was...very inconvenient at times.
"Do you want me to—"
"No!" I immediately interrupted him "Nah. I'll just grab a chair."
Since I was the one who offered to help, I didn't want to be the one who needed help in the end so I just pulled a chair and hopped on it.
"Ah, here it is. Kyojuro, take it!"
He took it from my hand and put it on the kitchen island. Then he gave me a hand climbing down the chair.
"Oh, what a gentleman" I teased him, pretending to be flushed. I looked down at our joined hands. Rengoku's was firm and warm.
"But of course! Chivalry is one of my many virtues." he winked at me.
I rolled my eyes and shook my head to hide my giddiness.
"Well then, let's go!"
We put the mugs with hot chocolate and the bowl filled with popcorn on the wooden tray and headed to the living room.
"Hold on, Kyojuro. Let me open the door for you. But first, close your eyes." I smirked at him playfully.
Rengoku simply did as I told him.
"Now I'm getting more curious than I was moments ago." he said in a husky voice.
I let out a chuckle, opening the door.
"You may open your eyes now."
And so he did.
While his eyes roamed the room, I silently admired his side profile. Rengoku was so beautiful. I felt that there was no other view in the world that could compare to him. Some people might say that was an exaggeration but to me it isn't. I loved him. I truly loved him. It was only natural for me to feel that way about him. Thinking about it made my heart ache (in a good way).
"Wow. This is my definition of cosiness. Thank you so much, love." he planted a kiss on my head.
"Anything for you." my voice came out as a whisper.
I felt his left hand on my lower back. His warm touch sent a shiver down my spine, making my cheeks burn. I looked at his other hand, balancing the tray.
"Let's go." he said softly.
While Rengoku put the tray down on the small table by the sofa, I made sure everything was ready and then clicked on the play button. I sprinted to the sofa, not wanting to miss any second of the episode. Rengoku was already lying with open arms, waiting to wrap me (and him) up in our burgundy fuzzy blanket.
In the background, the Gintama characters were talking. I carefully lied down next to him and he immediately wrapped his arms around me. His embrace made me feel so warm, safe, peaceful and loved. It reminded me of the feeling of coming home after a long day. Except that to me, home is wherever Rengoku is; not necessarily our place. With him, I could go anywhere or travel the world and I'd still feel at home.
Without me realising it, the opening song was already on its last chords.
'Oops! Focus y/n, focus!'
We ended up watching eight episodes in a row. I was actually surprised with Gintama. It was super funny while also being serious and sharing important messages.
I didn't think its type of humour would be Rengoku's cup of tea but boy, I was wrong. Considering how much I laughed too, despite not being a huge fan of comedies, I'd say it's hard not to laugh with Gintama. Rengoku's laughter was such a nice sound. It made me want to laugh even harder. It was pretty adorable.
"Hmmmmm this feels so good." murmured Rengoku huskily.
I closed my eyes, savouring the moment.
"Yes, it does. I don't want to leave. It's so warm."
I felt Rengoku's arms tighten around me.
"Me neither but we have to make something for dinner."
I couldn't help but groan which made Rengoku chuckle.
"Unless…?"
I noted a hint of excitement in his voice.
"Unless…?" I repeated, sitting up so I could look at him.
"What do you say about ordering take out?"
"Sounds great to me. I've really been craving Chinese food." I accidentally let out a moan.
Rengoku's right hand reached for my chin, caressing it with his thumb.
"Then let's order. Want some chop suey? Some shrimps? We haven't had them in so long."
"Omg yes! Hold on, let me go get my phone. I think I left it in the kitchen."
And with that I reluctantly left the warmth of Rengoku's embrace and headed to the kitchen.
"Gosh, I could eat this everyday." I said as I took off the lid of the small container and dug in. The smell and steam caressed my nose.
"Everyday?" Rengoku lifted an eyebrow.
"Well...maybe not everyday but I'd eat Chinese food at least twice a month. Yeah. That sounds reasonable"
Rengoku hummed in agreement while chewing his food. He had ordered a different dish. I ordered chop suey and he ordered shrimps. We usually shared the food.
"Do you want some of my food, love?"
I felt my lips curl in a grin.
"Yes, please, baby."
I froze.
'B-Baby?! I had never called him that! Aaaaaaah I can feel my cheeks turning pink!'
"I like that."
"L-Like what?" I pretended I didn't understand what he meant.
"You calling me baby, I like it." He stopped to lick his lips "Feel free to do it often."
I almost choked. Rengoku always knew how to make my heart skip a beat.
After we finished eating, we quickly did the dishes and went back to the sofa.
I was zapping through the tv channels when Rengoku stopped me.
"The Property Brothers are on! Do you want to watch it?" he suggested.
"Sure!"
After a while, before I knew it, I was yawning.
"Maybe we should go to sleep. It's already past 10 PM."
"Yes, we should. Tomorrow will be tiring. I bet I'll have tons of work to do this week." I sighed heavily. Weekends always felt too short.
"Let's head to bed then. Want me to carry you?" Rengoku smirked, wiggling his bushy eyebrows.
I stood up, looking down at him.
"I'm tired but not that tired unless you want me to carry you" I winked at him. "You can go ahead. I have to take my meds."
Rengoku was already in bed, scrolling through his phone when I got there.
"Ready to sleep?" I walked to the bed and pushed away the sheets so I could lie down, covering myself immediately. The bed was already so warm. I rolled to face Rengoku.
He put his phone down and turned the lights off.
I felt him slowly lie down, rolling so he could face me and wrap his arm around me tightly.
There it was, his warm and comforting touch. I could feel his soft breath against my skin.
"Goodnight, y/n and sweet dreams." said Rengoku in a soft low pitched voice.
"Goodnight, my love."
I felt myself slowly drifting off to the world of dreams, knowing that life with Rengoku would always be sweeter than any dream.
The End
