Chapter 1

Chapter Text

“So do you think-” Alex started, turning around.

The second her eyes landed on Kelly, she stopped. Alex sighed and mumbled, “And she said she ‘wasn’t that tired’?”. She walked over to Kelly’s sleeping figure and tugged the blankets up around her girlfriend. Alex stepped back to admire her work and sighed again.

Kelly had fallen asleep in the middle of the bed. If Alex wanted to sleep there, she would have to move her, and most likely would end up waking her exhausted girlfriend. Alex stood at the side of the bed, contemplating her options. She sighed after a moment, and grabbing her pillow and an extra blanket, headed for the living room. Moments after she settled onto the couch, Alex’s eyes began to close, and soon she fell asleep.

It didn’t last long, however. It was 2:27 A.M. when Alex awoke to the sounds of raucous screams. She jumped off of the couch and looked around the room, her eyes dotted with lights and her ears ringing - although the screaming had stopped. Alex ran over to the bed, where Kelly’s sleeping form was curled. It had taken Alex mere milliseconds to know that the screams had come from Kelly.

“Hey, hey” Alex called as she gently shook Kelly out of her nightmare. She sat up suddenly, gasping for breath. “Hey, it’s okay, it’s okay, you’re safe” Alex soothed as Kelly’s eyes darted around the room with wild terror. She seemed to compose herself after a moment, and turned to Alex. “I-” she started to say, but stopped as she began to cry. Alex’s heart snapped as she grasped Kelly close to her chest, listening to her sobs.

“What were you dreaming about?” Alex softly questioned after Kelly had calmed down. Kelly looked up at Alex, “I- uh, I don’t remember” she whispered. Alex nodded, “Okay”. They sat there, on the bed, wrapped in each other’s arms, for a long moment, before Alex had a thought. “Hey, Kel, have you had nightmares before? I’ve never noticed, and I’m a light sleeper” she rambled. Kelly smiled faintly, “I used to, but I don’t when-” she stopped short.

“When what?” Alex asked, hoping she wasn’t being too pushy. Kelly looked up at Alex, when I sleep next to you” she whispered. Alex’s heart leapt as she smiled and pressed a kiss to Kelly’s temple. “Okay,” she said, nose still pressed to the side of Kelly’s face, “then let’s go back to sleep”. Kelly smiled, “Only if you promise not to ditch me for the couch”. Alex gasped, “I only did that because you were sleeping in the middle of the bed, and-” she rambled on as the pair broke out into laughter.

When Alex and Kelly had run out of laughs, they settled down, and had scream-free sleep for the rest of the night.

Chapter 2: 3 Paragraphs

→ Inspired by "I wanna wake up every morning and tell you how much I love you". Extremely fluffy because they're softies (and extremely short because I didn’t know what to add hehe).

"I love you".

Kelly's eyes popped open.

"I love you so much! I love you more than I love wine, I love you more than I love my bike, I love you more than bossing people around, I love you so much that you could wrap my love around the moon...twice!"

Kelly laughed, propping herself up on her elbow and yawning. "When you said, 'I wanna wake up every morning and tell you how much I love you', this is not what I imagined" she smiled.

Alex pouted comically, propping herself up to match Kelly, "I thought I did a good job! I wrote 3 paragraphs in preparation for this morning!"

Kelly laughed again, "3 paragraphs? I didn’t know you were capable of such a feat! You know what, you can keep going".

Alex smiled, "I love you more than the sunsrise, I love you more than the sunset…"

Chapter 3: Exactly 42 Seconds

Summary:

Her phone buzzed again, and as Kelly read the text from Alex, she smiled.
Alex: You’re not alone, you know?
Kelly: I know that now. Thanks, love.
Alex: Always <3

Notes:

First of all, HAPPY PRIDE MONTH!
Second, let's pretend this hasn't been sitting in my drafts since April of 2021
And third, This takes place sometime shortly after 5x07, when Alex says she wants to help Kelly heal. Also inspired by when Alex says “When did my feelings for Kelly get so strong?”. Oh, and Alex seems like the kind of person who never does dishes.

Chapter Text

Kelly had been in Alex’s apartment for exactly 42 seconds before she knew something was wrong.

For one, the kitchen sink was lacking its usual mountain of dishes, and for two, it was...quiet?

Yep. There wasn’t a sound to be heard, which was incredibly unnerving.

“Alex?”, Kelly called, cautiously stepping further into the apartment, and draping her bag onto the floor.

There was no reply.

Each of her footsteps echoed with a creak of the floor as she walked across the room, looking around carefully to make sure that her girlfriend wasn’t hiding as part of a prank or something.

That’s what Kelly convinced herself that she was checking for anyway.

Anxiety was nothing but a distraction in her current situation.

 

She had searched the apartment 3 - very frantic - times over, before Kelly realised that she wasn’t even sure that Alex was home.

She let out a frustrated sigh and pulled her phone out of her back pocket. She sent a quick - decidedly non-frantic - text to Alex (and one to Kara for non-anxiety related reasons), and sat down onto the couch with another sigh.

A second without distraction seemed the perfect opportunity for a spontaneous psych-eval, and Kelly dropped her head into her hands as she thought more and more about her current situation.

She had panicked within seconds of arriving, simply because things seemed different.

Beyond that, she had been in full-fledged panic mode before she had even confirmed that there was probable cause.

Yikes, Kelly thought to herself.

 

There were two things going on here.

One, she cared about Alex more than she had previously allowed herself to believe, and two, well, she clearly still had some things to work through.

Kelly sighed just as her phone buzzed, and she nearly jumped off of the couch to grab it, fumbling it in a way that would have made Alex laugh.

She smiled as she read the text from Kara, and again when Alex’s - clearly coordinated - text appeared.

So, Alex was with Kara. And she was safe. And they weren’t fooled by her facad of calm.

That was good, right? Maybe. Probably. Yeah.

“Ugh”, Kelly sighed again, falling back down onto the couch.

 

It was a good thing. All of her revelations were.

Except for the trauma one, of course.

But it was nice to know that Alex wanted to help her heal.

And Kara, too.

Kelly smiled as she realized that she was not alone.

Which is ironic, she thought to herself as she lay back onto Alex’s couch, considering she was currently all alone.

 

Her phone buzzed again, and as Kelly read the text from Alex, she smiled.

Alex: You’re not alone, you know?
Kelly: I know that now. Thanks, love.
Alex: Always <3
