Chapter 1: I Hope It Lasts Another Year

Chapter Text

Hoseok doesn't usually celebrate Christmas that majestically.

His family exchanges one or two presents each and then they all watch movies in pajamas and eat Bibimbop.

This year is already ridiculously different.

"You're doing what this weekend?" Dawon demands, nearly choking and spitting out her wine simultaneously.

"I'm helping Yoongi and Jungkook put up a Christmas tree."

"Do they have a Christmas tree?"

Hoseok shakes his head.

Dawon's eyes widen further.

"Well, I mean, they do. But Yoongi thinks Jungkook's old enough now to have a real Christmas tree."

"Like...one that grew?"

Hoseok laughs. "Yes. Like a growing, actual tree."

"He does know that's a lot of work right?" Dawon eyes Hoseok like she can't quite believe what she's hearing, and honestly Hoseok had the same reaction when Yoongi first told him the idea.

But Yoongi had explained, with bright, animated eyes and a wide, gummy smile, that he'd had real live Christmas trees in his home growing up and he wanted to give Jungkook the same, and Hoseok hadn't been able to deny his love.

"So. You're going to go get a tree. At 6 o'clock in the morning."

"Yes."

"Hoseok?"

"Hmm?"

"You're completely whipped for this man."

Hoseok bursts out laughing, nearly falling off the couch at his sister's facial expression that ranges somewhere between disbelief, disgust, and awe.

"I'm sure it won't be that bad."

It is absolutely that bad, but Hoseok is never, ever going to tell Yoongi that.

Of the two of them, Hoseok is 10 times more likely to wake up before noon. Hoseok is also more liekly to keep a semi-normal sleep schedule.

However, standing here in the freezing ass cold, looking at these dumbass trees, you'd never know it.

Yoongi's bouncing around with Jungkook like a fucking pinball, pointing out trees and asking the small child which he thinks is best while Hoseok trails behind them, looking every bit like a man awake too early to function like a human.

"Seokie~" Yoongi calls, his voice sweet and warm, clueing Hoseok in that he's absolutely not going to like whatever he's about to hear, "we found one."

When Hoseok comes to stand next to Yoongi, he look at the tree in front of them and immediately understands why Yoongi's using the sweet tone.

The tree is nine feet tall.

Yoongi's pushing 5'7'' and Hoseok's barely reaching 6'00'' if he really tries.

"Yoongi," Hoseok begins.

"It's so big," Jungkook interrupts, his eyes wide with awe as he stares up at the tree with sparkling eyes, "I bet it's even bigger than Uncle Joonie!"

"Why don't we keep looking, and see if we find one that's better?" Hoseok asks, trying to sound like that's the most exciting thing in the world.

Yoongi pouts slightly, but Jungkook agrees wholeheartedly.

The next tree they come to that Yoongi says is acceptable is more average height, which Hoseok notices with a breath of relief.

Jungkook, however, doesn't seem to like this one as much and points further down the row.

"Appa, I think dat one's perfec'!"

Yoongi and Hoseok look over to where he's pointing.

There is a rather small tree. This tree is hardly taller than Jungkook, a good foot smaller than either Yoongi or Hoseok.

"That one?" Yoongi asks, his nose wrinkled slightly.

Jungkook just nods and runs over to it excitedly.

"Why?" Hoseok asks, eyeing a slightly taller tree, one between the two heights that Yoongi and Jungkook seem to want. "What about that one?" he asks the child, pointing at it.

Jungkook shakes his head. "Dis one." He points at the little tree in front of them.

Yoongi looks down at it a little sadly.

"But don't you want a big tree, Koobi?" he whines slightly, trying to persuade his kid without being a pushy parent. He just really doesn't want a Christmas tree that's smaller than him. "It's smaller than our usual one."

"I like it. It's Koobi size."

"He's not wrong," Hoseok murmurs to Yoongi, an amused smile tugging at his lips when he sees the other's disgruntled expression.

"Yeah...but it's just...."

Yoongi's protests trails off when they watch Jungkook reach forward and wrap his arms around middle of the tree, giggling happily.

"I'm going to take you home," Jungkook whispers to the tree, as if telling it a secret, "I jus' know Appa and Daddy will say yes. I'll give my blankie jus' like Linus, and you can be warm, Koobi tree."

"Well, now we have to get it for him," Yoongi mutters, rolling his eyes at his son, "I don't know how he turned out so...soft."

"It's 'cause his Appa is soft," Hoseok replies without missing a beat.

Yoongi splutters in protest while Hoseok steps forward.

"Let's go tell the nice lady that works here which tree we want. We'll have Appa stand by and keep watch so no one else tries to take your tree," he tells Jungkook, who nods happily and releases from his tree hug to grab Hoseok's hand.

They leave Yoongi there, still sputtering indignantly and slightly glaring at the tree.

"I don't tink Appa likes my tree," Jungkook notes a little sadly as they walk away.

"I'll make it up to Appa, Koobi, don't worry about it."

Yoongi and Hoseok stand back to look at their handiwork.

Jungkook's little tree is set up quite happily in one corner of the living room, ready to be decorated with the ornaments that were pulled out of the attic the day before.

Jungkook ran off to his room as soon as the little tree was in place to get one of his blankets so they could wrap it around the tree stand to properly keep the tree warm.

"I can't believe we got the smallest fucking tree on the lot," Yoongi mutters, flopping down on the couch with a sigh.

Hoseok just laughs and sits next to him. "I can. Jungkook's got a soft spot for the underdog already."

Yoongi just sighs. He lolls his head back and lets it rest on Hoseok's shoulder for a second before Hoseok is pulling him properly into a cuddle.

Jungkook runs back into the room again and works meticulously for several minutes to wrap his blanket around the bottom of the tree, without getting it in the water bowl part of the stand, while the adults watch him in silent affection.

"Is almos' perfec'," Jungkook declares when he stands back up, "we jus' has to decorate."

"In a minute, Koo," Hoseok tells him, beckoning the small boy over to the couch, "let's rest for a bit first."

Jungkook grins at the prospect of snuggles and hurries over to the couch, nearly dive bombing the snuggle session.

Hoseok lets out a dramatic oof as the smaller body collides with his, but doesn't complain when he feel Jungkook's tiny hands curl into his shirt and hold on tightly.

The tiny body lets out a contented sigh.

Yoongi hums a soft song, which Hoseok vaguely registers as O Christmas Tree, as Hoseok closes his eyes.

When he opens them again, there are ornaments on the tree, and the sounds of baby giggles mixed with Yoongi's hiccup laughter coming from the kitchen.

"Shhh," Yoongi urges, causing Hoseok to smile as he closes his eyes once more, "you can't wake up Daddy."

Hoseok's heart skips a beat at the term. He's still not used to being a 'daddy'. Of all things. Him. Jung Hoseok. Daddy.

There's a long bit of mostly silence, where whispers are exchanged that Hoseok can't hear, and more soft giggles before more shushing and then the soft patter of little feet keeping up with big feet come into the living room and stop right next to Hoseok.

A plate is set on the coffee table in front of Hoseok, but he still doesn't open his eyes, waiting for whatever ruse is coming to be completed.

Hoseok inhales deeply, suddenly catching the scent of coffee and cookies and he's not sure how he didn't notice that before because it's the best thing he's ever experienced.

A soft weight moves it's way onto his lap, and then there's a gently hand smoothing the hair from his forehead.

There comes one kiss to each of his cheeks, one large, and one small, and then a soft voice calls to him.

"Daddy, is not sleeps time."

Hoseok can't fight his smile anymore.

He cracks and wraps his arms tightly around the little boy on his lap, cuddling into him and taking a long breath that is all Jungkook, soft little kid smell.

"I suppose it isn't," he murmurs, sounding slurred with sleep, even to his own ears.

"Appa and I made cookies and coppee for you."

"Coffee," Hoseok corrects absently. "Thank you, baby."

He releases Jungkook and looks up to see Yoongi sitting on the arm of the couch next to him, watching with a soft smile.

"Thank you," Hoseok says to him too.

Yoongi just shrugs.

They eat cookies and drink coffee (or hot chocolate if they're under the age of 20), and watch Christmas movies and play the rest of the day. It's pleasant and the only light they leave on are the lights on the tree which casts the whole family in a soft warm glow. Hoseok feels like it's entirely too fitting.

"God damnit, Hoseok, why the fuck did I let you convince me to do this?"

"Shut up, don't wake Jungkook, Yoongi'll kill us both."

Namjoon halts his work and pants. "Why the hell did it have to be this tree?"

"Listen, I said the same thing, but this is what Yoongi wants."

"You're such a bitch for him."

"Like you wouldn't do the same ridiculous shit for Jin."

Namjoon flips him off.

With much more wrestling and cursing, Hoseok and Namjoon manage to get the large tree in an upright position on the stand. Namjoon goes to get water to fill the bowl while Hoseok unplugs Jungkook's little tree from the lights and moves it carefully, and as quietly as possible, into the little boy's room.

Lucky him, both Jungkook and Yoongi are heavy sleepers, and, he notices, curled in Yoongi's bed, because Jungkook's is empty.

Hoseok had left earlier that evening to go to work, so he hadn't gotten to fall asleep with both of them that night, but he was hoping this would partially make up for how busy he's been.

Namjoon's begun stringing lights and tinsel over the new tree by the time Hoseok re-emerges from Jungkook's bedroom.

Between the two of them, and considering the simplicity of the theme, they get the tree completely ready in about an hour.

They stand back and admire their handiwork.

"It's throwing off the absolute masterpiece we've just put together," Namjoon comments.

He's referring, of course, to the ornament that does not match the silver and green theme of the tree.

Hoseok shoves him. "Hush."

"You're a sentimental fool, Hoseok."

"You know, you're not the first one to express that sentiment to me tod

Namjoon gives him a pointed look, that Hoseok decidedly ignores, in favor of staring at the tree.

"Alright, well, I'm off to my own home. In my warm bed. Where I should've been for several hours now," Namjoon announces, "I'll see myself out."

"Bye, Joonie, I owe you one."

"Oh, you owe me several."

Hoseok rolls his eyes, but still waves as Namjoon walks out.

Hoseok goes about getting ready for sleep, starting with getting a glass of water from the kitchen.

"Seokseok?" Yoongi's voice calls, sleepily, "Seokie? Holy shit..."

Hoseok hurries into the living room where Yoongi is standing in sleepy awe, staring at the tree now in the living room.

"Like it?" Hoseok asks, grinning, "I put Jungkook's little one in his room, figure it's probably better there."

Yoongi doesn't say anything for several minutes.

Long enough that Hoseok starts to question this whole thing.

He questions it even more when Yoongi returns to the hallway and he hears nothing but shuffling a few doors shutting.

"Yoongi? What are you doing?" Hoseok trails into the hallway, after Yoongi, his brows creased in concern, but he doesn't even get very far before he's attacked.

Yoongi's on him before he can even really register that there's another person in his vicinity and then they're kissing with an intensity that Hoseok was far from prepared for. He barely manages to hold on to Yoongi as he stumbles back into the wall, pulling Yoongi closer to him in an effort to regain some semblance of control over his own body, much less Yoongi.

"You're so fucking perfect," Yoongi breathes, each word punctuated by a kiss to some part of Hoseok's face that he can reach. A long, tongue-tangling kiss follows the statement and leaves Hoseok dizzy, breathless.

He laughs. "I'm glad you like it."

Yoongi makes a strangled noise in his throat and tugs Hoseok back into the living room.

"What are you doing?" Hoseok asks, going willingly, but feeling highly confused, "it's like 2 in the morning."

"Yep, and you're gonna fuck me in front of this tree until I tell you to stop," Yoongi declares, dragging Hoseok over to the couch.

Hoseok physically stops breathing. He stops thinking. The words take several seconds to process and by then Hoseok notices that Yoongi's already pulled out the bed from the couch and is sitting there waiting for him to catch up with dark eyes.

"Sorry," Hoseok chokes out, "I was...not expecting that."

"I'll wait for you," Yoongi answers with a smirk, beckoning Hoseok closer, "always."

"Cheesy," Hoseok mutters, finally snapping into the near present and moving up onto the bed with Yoongi.

"Mmmm," Yoongi hums.

"I suppose you've been gathering supplies?" Hoseok asks, crawling onto the bed and over Yoongi, forcing the other onto his back.

Yoongi hums again, a grin playing with his lips. He gestures to the side where the bottle of lube now sits, and Hoseok dimly notes that there are pillows on the bed.

"Mmh, always so proactive," Hoseok chuckles, running his lips over Yoongi's neck.

"I try."

They both laugh together, the happiness having nowhere else to go but out.

Hoseok takes his time, although Yoongi pulls at him impatiently. At his clothes, at his skin, his hair, and everything else.

"Hoseok," he whines, "stop teasing."

"I'm not teasing," Hoseok murmurs, his lips moving over Yoongi's bare hip lovingly, "I'm worshipping you, hyung. Don't you feel it?"

And Yoongi does, of course he does. How could he not, when Hoseok takes his time with everything? It's like being meticulously put together, when he didn't even know he'd fallen apart. It's not really magical, but it's definitely something, and that's everything he wanted.

Hoseok's so gentle with him this time, that Yoongi can't help the soft whines and breaths that leave his mouth. He usually tries to be quiet (toddler and all) but he just feels so cherished that he wants Hoseok to know. So he makes more noise than he probably should, but it's answered with the same level of groans and soft whispers of praise, so he doesn't feel so bad.

Yoongi will always be a little surprised, and Hoseok too, how different it is to make love.

Afterward, there's no strange empty silence lingering around them. It's the sounds of their home, and the soft pecks the two press to lips, shoulders, cheeks, foreheads. Then Hoseok's cleaning Yoongi up, dragging into another peak just with his hands, and cleaning up all over again, before their finally laying together, Yoongi's back to Hoseok's front, and watching the light on the tree shine.

"It's the Slytherin color scheme for me," Yoongi murmurs sleepily, letting his eyes slide shut finally.

Hoseok snorts. "I can't say that was intentionally."

"No, no. Call me out like that. It's fine."

Hoseok snuggles closer to Yoongi and whispers teasingly, "for being the nerd that noticed that or being a bitch?"

Yoongi smacks blindly behind him with an indignant, "shut up, you nasty Gryffindor."

Hoseok just laughs more and nuzzling Yoongi's neck, eventually pressing his lips there and nipping gently. "You know I love you. Snakey tendency or no."

Yoongi rolls his eyes without opening them. "Yeah, yeah. I love you, too."

When Jungkook wakes up in the morning, he immediately runs into his father's room yelling.

When he doesn't find him there, he runs into the living room and his eyes grow ten times their size when he takes in the very, very big tree in front of him.

He runs up to it, completely bypassing Hoseok and Yoongi, who are watching him blearily from the bed, still trying to wake themselves from the shouting.

Jungkook looks closely at the ornament that's directly at his eye level. The one that doesn't match.

He gasps.

"It's Koobi! And Appa! And  Daddy! We're in a snowball!"

Hoseok smiles and lays back as Yoongi's eye brows crease.

"Lemme see it, Koobi. Can you take it off for me?"

Jungkook takes it off the tree carefully and brings it over to his father.

Yoongi examines the ball in his hand carefully.

On one you can see a picture of the three of them, playing in the snow in Namjoon and Jin's backyard the Namjoon must've taken. There are little white flakes, like a snowglobe, that float around in the ball.

On the back, is a short message in Hoseok's handwriting.

I love you more and more each day.

Good thing my love for you is infinite.

 - Daddy

"Merry Christmas, baby," Hoseok murmurs gently, kissing Yoongi's should softly. "Both my babies," he declares louder, pulling Jungkook up into the bed and tickling the child into hysterics.

Yoongi blinks hot tears away, and smiles widely at the two of them.

"It's not Chris'mas, yet, Daddy," Jungkook scold him playfully.

Hoseok just laughs at the boy, and sits up with him.

They chatter on about breakfast and plans for the day as Yoongi lays there, barely listening, falling more and more in love by the very second.

Good thing their love is infinite.
