Dear Emma,

Summary:

Norman has won. The demon race will forever be only present in memory. But the double-edged sword weighs its consequences, and Norman writes to Emma following his victory.

This fanfiction was more or less a character study, but if you happen to enjoy it, I'm glad.

Work Text:

I thought this would have made you happy. Was it worth it? You feel like a distant memory when you sit in front of me. How is it possible for us to feel close when we're at our greatest distance? Where did you go?

The lives of demons are mere inconvenient hurdles in the process. Are they not the monsters you dreamt about in Grace Field? Are they not the ones responsible for Conny and the others' deaths? Are they not the reason we awoke to Ray's crying when we were children? Every memory I have before Λ7214 is corrupted with the knowledge that nothing was ever pure. The relationships I formed at Grace Field are the only thing I have left of it. I have to protect what I have left.

In Grace Field, you wanted to take all the children with us during the escape. Did you not conform to the safety in Ray's plan in the end? Despite your wishes, you complied, knowing it was the most promising action to take. Did your newfound choice come with its consequences? Of course. As does mine. This was for safety. There was no other way that would ensure human life would be protected. You have to trust that I will make certain of it. Fear is the only thing holding you back. To achieve our goal, you have to be willing to make sacrifices.

Why do you care what becomes of them?
We are nothing but beings to be consumed to them.
They don't care what becomes of us.

I miss seeing you be happy. I miss your smile. I hear you cry for them at night. You miss them. How? How could you miss them? I don't understand, Emma. They're the reason for everything we've suffered through. Demons are the reason our family is dead. They'll be the reason I'll be dead.

Why are you leaving me? Where are you going? Can I follow?
Or was the gate closed long ago when I pulled the trigger?

I thought that this was something we wanted.
