Solving cases on an international level is the new norm for Katou Haru. With the surge of adollium related cases, he’ll be flying halfway across the world and solve the next big case. Haru and Daisuke were able to arrest the smugglers in their latest mission in New York, but they still had to wait for the authorities, namely the FBI, to finish up in reports before Haru can fly back to Japan. So what better way to kill time in the Big Apple than to do some exploring?
While his English speaking skills are not the best, he knows enough words and phrases to string sentences (like the basic ‘yes’, ‘no’, ‘thank you’, ‘money isn’t everything’). If all else fails, he has Google Translate to do the talking for him. (With all the fancy Kambe tech he uses on the daily, Haru wonders why they couldn’t at least spare him a translation device instead).
Coming out from the lobby of the high rise apartment (it was already a compromise at this point, since it was either this or a really luxurious penthouse, to which Haru absolutely refused), Haru followed the directions to the nearest supermarket. He would much rather be the one to buy his own groceries than have one of the Kambe staff do it for him (“wouldn’t it be better to have someone else do it for you?”, Haru chuckles at the recollection).
The supermarket was only 3 blocks away, but Haru is already concerned about the number of times strangers would whistle at his direction and say weird phrases like ‘I’d tap that’ (He’ll have to remember to ask Daisuke what that phrase meant). Just then, a man came up to Haru’s side and started talking in an accent that makes it hard for him to understand what he’s saying.
“Hey pretty boy, you don’t seem to be around from here, but I gotta say you are one hell of a catch!” The words were slurred a bit, probably drunk, Haru has concluded. He decided to ignore him, hoping that the creepy man would go away. Instead, the man draped his arm on Haru’s shoulders, catching the taupe haired detective off guard.
“Hey now, don’t play hard to get baby. How about we get some fun around here?”
“No thank you,” Haru managed to let out before grabbing the man’s wrist and forcefully removing his arm from his shoulders. He was only a corner away from his destination, so he just walked away, thinking that his firm rejection would deter the foreign man from following him further. Oh how Haru was proven very wrong.
Now furious, the man tightly grabbed Haru’s wrist and yanked him so that he was standing very close to the man.
“Listen here you little bitch, be fucking grateful you’re getting hit on. Otherwise I would’ve already-“ the man didn’t get to finish his sentence when a gloved fist came flying in a hook to his jaw, knocking him out instantly. Haru knows that hand all too well, his eyes following all the way until locking his gaze into the familiar steel blue eyes.
“Kambe?! What the hell are you doing here?”
“I thought I made it very clear not to go out on your own, unless you stumble yourself into trouble on foreign land?” Daisuke looks down on the unconscious stranger, then turned his attention back to the taller detective. “In this case, you already did”
“Hey now, I would’ve gotten it under control even without your help. I may not know that much English but I know a drunk bastard when I see one” Haru replied, with his experience with dealing with drunk men and trying to de-escalate drunken fights have any say in it.
“I guess since you’re here anyways, come help me with the grocery shopping. You can help me with some English here and there too” Haru rubs his neck, small patches of pink blossoming in his cheeks. Daisuke can only look at the assistant inspector in wonder and endearment. He takes hold of Haru’s cold bare hand and places it in his coat pocket, a small smile forming.
“I suppose I have no choice”
Omake:
“By the way, what does it mean when someone says ‘I’d tap that’”
“HEUSC, locate the person immediately”
“Hey-!”
