Work Text:

“You should go now Tae, it’ll be difficult to go there after dark. I’ll finish that.” Jimin said to Taehyung who was busy adding some finishing touches to the bouquet. “It’s already done Jiminie, I’ll just add this forget-me-nots.”

Jimin smiled and threw Taehyung his scarf. “I said I’ll do it, Tae. Come on now, go. He is waiting.”

Taehyung shyly looked at his friend and blushed. “You sure you’ll be fine closing the shop on your own?”

“Of course, silly. I’ll be fine.”

“Thank you, Minie.” Taehyung said as he grabbed his coat. “Don’t wait for me at the cottage okay? Lock the doors well. I’ll come back in the morning.”

The sun is almost setting and the surroundings were colored in a pretty shade of orange. Taehyung quickly ran towards the middle of the forest where the tree house that they built together stood. It’s their secret sanctuary — a place that they could call their own. When Taehyung heard the quiet flow of the calm river, he knew that he was already near.

He smiled to himself when he saw that the tree house already had some lights on inside. It means that he was already there. But behind Taehyung’s excited smile, a heavy feeling hung inside his heart— and its a feeling that he hates so much.

He climbed the ladder as quietly as possible so that his lover won’t hear him. He opened the tiny door and he slid in. He then saw the alpha lighting up more candles and putting some rose petals in the soft and fluffy white mattress. Taehyung’s heart filled with so much warmth.

“Jungkookie?”

Jungkook whipped his head towards him fast, he didn’t notice Taehyung was already there. “Oh! You’re here! I didn’t even hear you climb up. A stealthy little squirrel, I see.” Jungkook walked up to him and he cutely booped Taehyung’s nose. “I missed you, my love.”

They wrapped each other’s arms around their waists, and they looked at each other with so much love and adoration. “We were together just yesterday, baby. How come you missed me still?” Taehyung hit Jungkook’s chest coyly.

“It’s because I love you so much. More than anything in the world.”

Jungkook kissed Taehyung’s lips slowly and the omega gladly kissed him back. Taehyung closed his eyes for he wanted to remember every detail of Jungkook’s kiss. He wanted to remember how smooth Jungkook’s lips were like, how sweet it tastes, and how good his breath smells. He held Jungkook’s face closer to deepen the kiss and he wanted to feel all of it. He can’t imagine kissing another man’s lips other than Jungkook’s.

Jungkook laid him down slowly to the mattress, and they kissed each other once more. They looked into each other’s eyes as they slowly undressed and their hearts thumped inside their chests like it was their first time — even though it wasn’t.

They made love that night, slowly, like they have all the time to the world. They could only hear each other’s moans and labored breaths, and that’s all that matters. Jungkook’s hands travelled all over Taehyung’s body, and the alpha’s touch made the omega pliant. Taehyung submitted himself to the alpha fully and they both fulfilled each other’s carnal desires.

After they reached their highs, they hugged tight, not minding how sweaty their bodies had become. Jungkook then placed soft kisses on Taehyung’s temple, and it made the omega sob.

“Please don’t cry, my love. I promise I’ll be back.”

“Why do you have to go, Jungkook. Please don’t. We can run away. Far away, just you and me. Where no one would ever find us.” Taehyung cried and leaned his face to the warmth of Jungkook’s hand.

“You know that will be treason, Tae. I have to fight this war.”

“But not all the Alphas were drafted. They chose you, and it’s so unfair Jungkook!”

“They chose me because I’m one of the strongest. They need me Tae. And my loyalty lies with you and our pack. I want to protect you — all of you. It’s for the future of the pack too, so that the children you will bear will live in a peaceful place. Not like this.”

Taehyung cried even harder. “But how can I bear children if you don’t come back? I-If you die?”

Jungkook smiled sadly. “You won’t lose me. I’ll always come back for you. You know that.”

“Jungkook, please. Stay with me. Don’t go please. Please.”

“Taehyung...”

”Mark me. Mark me right now and make me yours.” Taehyung said, his voice desperate. He kissed Jungkook and the alpha kissed him back, harder. But it broke Taehyung’s heart when the alpha slowly pulled away.

“Don’t make it harder for me Taehyung-ah.” Jungkook said and tears suddenly fell from his eyes. Taehyung raised his voice at him. “Why?! Why won’t you mark me! Prove to me your love and promise me you’ll come back!” The alpha didn’t budge. “Jungkook!”

“What if I really couldn’t come back Tae?! What if I-I died there in action, huh? No alpha will ever take you on if you’re already marked by me! No one will marry you and no one will take care of you. You’ll be alone! A-and I don’t want that. I don’t want that life for you Tae.”

“Jungkook...”

“If I don’t come back then marry someone that will love you just like I do. Who will take care of you and protect you—just like I do. Don’t wait for me anymore if I didn’t come back after long time. Promise me, Tae.”

Taehyung looked at Jungkook shocked. “But y-you said you’ll come back...”

“I will. I promise I will, my love. But I am scared too — what if I don’t?”

Jungkook and Taehyung hugged tighter. They cried in each other’s arms and kissed each other needly, longingly. “Mark me or not, my decision will still be the same. I won’t marry any other alpha if it’s not you.” Taehyung said making Jungkook smile, and they made love to each other the whole night.

Morning came and it’s already time to leave. Taehyung and Jungkook held each other’s hand as they slowly walked the trail out of the forest. They were both quiet, but their hearts are soaring with so much love. They could only hear the chirping of the birds and the crisp sound the leaves made under their shoes as they walked. Jungkook smiled at Taehyung and the omega smiled back — even though words were left unspoken, their eyes said loud and clear that they only belonged to one another and no one else.

When they reached Taehyung’s cottage, the two of them kissed and hugged, as if it was the last time.

“Jungkook...”

“Shh, don’t cry my love. Remember my promise.”

Taehyung nodded. “I will.”

Jungkook smiled. “I’ll repeat it in case you forget. When I come back, I’ll come running towards you. And I will kneel here in this exact spot —“

Taehyung smiled amidst his tears.

“—then I’ll put out the ring and I’ll ask you to marry me. Then you will say yes, and we will get married. And I’ll grow flowers like you, and your womb will carry the most beautiful girl in the universe.”

Taehyung cried as he kissed Jungkook goodbye. He didn’t want to let go, and he knew Jungkook felt the same way too. It’s painful but he will wait, and he knows Jungkook will never break his promise.

—-

Jungkook kissed Taehyung’s photo that he kept on his helmet. It’s been 5 months and they’re winning the war. Finally, he can go home. They lost a lot of men, but he was one of the lucky ones. One last fight and this will be all over. He could already see Taehyung in white, and how beautiful he would’ve looked at their wedding.

He was inside the trench and he suddenly heard bombs going off. “Man your stations!!” The general shouted and Jungkook gripped his rifle. “Fuck! They’re ambushing us!” A soldier shouted.

“Fire!”

The exchange of bombs and shots went on for almost half an hour.

“Shit!” The man beside Jungkook screamed.

“Namjoon-hyung!” Jungkook said and he aided his friend. “Hyung, stay with me!” The older alpha groaned in pain. Namjoon was shot near his neck, breaking his clavicle. “H-help me...”

“I’ll get you out of here!” Jungkook swung Namjoon’s arm around his neck and they tried to walk towards the infirmary.

They were almost halfway when— “Arggh!!!” Jungkook shouted and the two fell down on the ground.

“Jungkook-ah!!” He heard Yoongi called him from behind the trenches, but Jungkook’s vision started to get blurry.

Jungkook laid on the ground and he held the side of his torso. He then looked at his hand and saw that it was full of blood. He groaned in pain — he got shot and he felt some of his ribs break. He could feel his consciousness slowly slipping away due to loss blood. He cried and screamed. “I promised him. I promised...Taehyung-ah...”

He stared blankly into the skies — and with Taehyung’s name on his lips, Jungkook slowly closed his eyes.

—-

Taehyung woke up in the middle of the night, sweating profusely and catching his breath. It’s been 2 weeks since the war ended. Their pack won and there was already peace. The soldiers who were drafted were now going home per battalion and every time a new batch of soldiers where scheduled to go home, Taehyung would run immediately to the town gates.

But almost all the surviving soldiers were already home, and there’s only one battalion left.

Taehyung and Jimin ran to the gates to welcome the last batch of soldiers. Taehyung stretched his neck and he scanned the whole crowd — but there were still no signs of Jungkook. Then, the crowds started to thin out and the town gates began to close...

Jungkook didn’t come home.

Taehyung cried and cried for days. He didn’t eat nor sleep a wink. “He didn’t keep his promise Jiminie. He said he’ll come back.” He cried inside Jimin’s arms. Taehyung also searched for Jungkook’s body in the morgues and days had already passed and still, no luck. He feared that Jungkook’s body was just dumped somewhere and it broke his heart that he couldn’t even give his lover a proper burial.

Every night, he would go to the tree-house they built together, and Taehyung would cry as he reminisced their happy memories there. He curled himself around Jungkook’s clothes, and he cried as he breathed in the faint scent Jungkook left behind. When morning came, Taehyung will always leave and he walked the path they once walked together. Tears rolled down his cheeks as he walked the path alone. If Taehyung only knew that it was their last walk together, he could’ve walked slower.

A week had already passed and Taehyung returned to work. He felt almost like a zombie —he felt empty and everything hurts. The love of his life died, and his heart died along with him.

He then heard the bell of the shop ring and a middle aged woman came in. Taehyung  stood up and forced out a smile. “What can I do for you ma’am?”

“Please arrange me a bouquet of white roses, darling.”

Taehyung nodded. “Of course.” And Taehyung arranged it beautifully in no time. “Do you need a card ma’am. What occasion is this for?”

“My son came back from war today, and he loves white roses. I want to place this in his room so he’ll feel more at home. His name is Namjoon.”

Taehyung looked up at the woman shocked. “From war? I-I thought there’s no more battalion left?”

The lady smiled at him. “I thought so too. But one platoon was ambushed on the way home, and they needed to stop by at a nearby town to recover. They came home just today.”

Taehyung almost dropped his pen. A tiny hope sparked inside his chest once again. There’s still one more platoon —one more chance. Jungkook could be alive after all.

“Excuse me, ma’am. I have to go.” Taehyung said and he immediately rushed out of the flower shop. “Jiminie can you assist her for me?” Taehyung said to Jimin who was busy spraying water to the flowers outside. “Sure Tae, but where are you going?”

Taehyung ran as fast as he could. He cried so hard that it’s almost hard to breathe. It’s a long shot but he still hopes that Jungkook could still be alive. He went to his cottage where Jungkook made his final promise, but when he got there, he was all alone.

Taehyung closed his eyes and cried once again. He gripped his chest to ease the pain, but it was no use. The pain was too much to bear, and he can almost hear his already broken heart breaking into a million pieces more.

“Taehyung-ah.”

Taehyung gasped when he heard that voice. Could it be?

He turned around to see who the owner of that familiar voice was.

“J-Jungkook?”

Jungkook dropped his bags and he ran smiling towards Taehyung, and the omega did so too. As their bodies clashed into each other’s embrace, all they could do is cry and pour their hearts into one another. They kissed long and passionately — finally, they are both home.

“This isn’t a dream, is it? Please tell me it isn’t Jungkook-ah.” Taehyung cried while Jungkook lovingly held his face.

Jungkook shook his head and smiled. “It’s not, my love. I’m alive and I came back for you. I love you so much Taehyung. Thank you for waiting for me.”  Jungkook kissed Taehyung’s forehead long.

“I could wait forever. And if you didn’t come back, I am willing to wait for you in another lifetime.”

They smiled and they kissed once again. “I love you Taehyung, so much.” Taehyung then pulled away and held Jungkook’s cheek. “I love you more Jungkook-ah. Thank you for keeping your promise.”

“This is just my first promise, Tae. I also promised one more thing right?” Jungkook said and he took a red velvet box from his pocket. He held Taehyung’s hand and he slowly kneeled on one knee.

“Jungkook...”

“This is my second promise — Kim Taehyung will you marry me?”

Taehyung smiled amidst his tears. “ Yes, Jungkook. Yes!!!!” 💍

-FIN- 🥺

Hope you liked it!
It is roughly based on the photo I saw in IG before, where a soldier’s letter was found, addressed to his lover 💘 I used that line in this story! Can you guess?
