Work Text:
The moment Shouto had called Katsuki to the hospital, Katsuki knew. He knew what he was going to get asked. The kid he saved, he wanted them to adopt and make their own. They were discussing for months prior to the incident about starting an actual family and how to do it. There were so many options with the range of quirks people possessed. But in that instant, Katsuki stormed into the hospital to find a child covered in grime crying his eyes out into Shouto’s chest begging him to wake him up from this nightmare. His heart was being pulled by strings. There wasn’t a doubt the kid lost the most important people in his life at the attack.
“I got on the scene as soon as Uravity called for assistance. You probably saw it right? Red Riot and Chargebolt were on the scene too, we went to check the building. Froppy said they cleared out and I-I found him,” Shouto’s voice was calm and gentle as he spoke about the scenario. His crimson eyes locked with the mismatched in front of him, he knew that look way too well. “What’s the bugger’s name?”
“Tsukiya Yuuta, his---” Katsuki cut him off from his sentence, “I got it,” he replied sternly as the child pried himself off of Shouto. The kid’s hair was shades of dark blues and purples flowing every which way with piercing snow-white eyes. Yuuta brought his hands to his face and rubbed his eyelids, “T-Thank you,” he said weakly. Bowing in front of the two of them, “I-I forgot to say it earlier. Momma and Dada…. They would’ve said it too.”
The moment he turned and faced Katsuki, the instant his starry white eyes made contact with his own ruby ones, “Mister Dynamight, do you know w-where I‘ll go now?” The need to protect something bubbled up inside of him, he understands Shouto completely now. The two Pro-Hero’s looked back at one another then back at the child. A loud sigh escaped Katsuki’s lips. “Do ya wanna come with us?” As the words left his lips he could feel his husband radiating with happiness. Curse him.
“R-Really? You would do that? Is it just until they find out what to do with me?”
Shouto reached his hand out and took his hand in his, “Yeah, we are.” That was probably the right thing to say, the child’s mind must be overflowing with information he could barely process.
“I’m gonna find out if he has relatives and all the other sh---sugar,” Katuski stopped himself from swearing and walked away from the two to gather the information that they would need to adopt Tsukiya. One good thing about being a hero would be that the people know not to keep Dynamight waiting.
Tsukiya Yuuta
Age: 6
Date of Birth: 02/26
Relatives: Mother: lost connection with family, disowned, see file 0-804
Father: only child, parents deceased.
That’s one step closer. The adoption process looks long and tedious a minimum of fucking 6 months. Katsuki told the woman there what his plans were and she was more than eager to help. Long story short, the kid can stay with them; they'll just be monitored to prove that they can actually take care of a 6-year-old kid during the whole legal process shit.
That was the beginning.
They took Tsukiya home that night. He was more than amazed at their apartment, but he was very hesitant to touch anything. Katsuki made them dinner. You can still have dinner at nine. He shrugged the weird time off. Shouto gave him a bath to clean off the dirt, throwing him in one of their shirts for now. They would soon get him a proper wardrobe.
That same night he slept in between the two in their bed. Neither of them were sure if Tsukiya knew they could hear him silently crying. When Katsuki looked over he was asleep. His eyes were shut out, he was fidgeting around restlessly. Occasionally he murmured “help me”, “I’m sorry”, “don’t leave. Please stay with me.” Needless to say, it was hard for either of them to sleep that night.
Shouto was more jealous about it when they woke up that morning with him snuggled up into his side. Katsuki could tell the crying carried on after his eyes gave out on him from the wet part of his shirt. The kid’s puffy red eyes were more than a dead give away. Shouto’s eye bags were nothing more than a representation that he was dwelling on the “what if’s” as a hero.
Once the quiet morning settled in and not ready to speak about last night, they let their friends and family know. Both respective friend groups more than ecstatic, too ecstatic. There was no amount of convincing you could do to let Tsukiya be alone with the extras, the chance of anything going wrong is way too fucking high. Shouto’s family was pleased with the idea, his sister more than happy to babysit. Probably the better option than well the other extras. His own hag sent an entire fashion line at their doorstep the second he told her. It wasn’t that big of a fucking deal!
After that day, a week nearly passed by and the gloomy look on Tsukiya’s face slowly faded. The light in his eyes slowly came back. The crying before bed lessened, the nightmares turned into sweet dreams. It was a good sign. Shouto would slowly stop beating himself over not being able to save his parents. Things take time to heal. Katsuki hated he couldn’t do anything about it. Hated that he couldn’t lessen the burden on their shoulders. That there was no instant remedy.
They haven’t even asked him if he even wanted to stay with them. Tsukiya was fairly good at reading in between the lines. It was a blessing that he voices out all his feelings the more comfortable you get with him.
Kids were too much fucking work.
“Mister!” Tsukiya tugged on Katsuki’s sweats gaining his attention, “Ya know you don’t need to call me Mister. Katsuki’s fine for now.” Mister was an improvement from Mister Dynamight. Baby steps, Katsuki repeated to himself; baby steps. The Kid just fucking got here.
“Katsuki-san? Shouto-san said the same thing,” he paused for a moment before he continued to speak, “How long am I staying here?” Tsukiya titled his head and avoided his eye contact. This kid is cute, he’ll have a swarm all over him, if he says people’s names like that when he’s older.
“How long do ya wanna stay here?” Katuski looked away and poured the fried rice onto the plates. The changes in his schedule were not easy to make, for him to be here at this hour. A lot of arguing later Katsuki got his way… mostly. The night shifts with Shitty Hair may be annoying as fuck, but he can survive it’s only for a little while longer. The kid’s going to school starting next week anyway.
“I-I don’t want to leave, Katsuki-san,” he stuttered out his face bright red, embarrassed at what he just admitted out loud. The ends of Katsuki’s mouth pulled up into a sly smirk, “Then ya ain’t leaving, Tsukiya. Simple as that.” Katsuki's going to boast the fuck out of this to Shouto.
“Really?! I can stay here forever?!” Tsukiya jumped up and down with excitement, the light in his eyes fully returning. He ran around the kitchen, a wide smile plastered on his face. The door of the apartment slowly swung open, his tired husband trudged inside.
“Shouto-san! Katsuki-san said I could stay here forever! Doesn’t Tsukiya Bakugou sound cool?” Tsukiya ran into Shouto’s arms and hugged him tightly. He picked him up and faced Katsuki in the kitchen.
“Yeah, it sounds a lot cooler than Katsuki Bakugou, who I can’t believe asked you without me?” A warm smile crossed his lips before Shouto’s look faded, “You aren’t getting anything tonight.” Like he could resist him, the clingy fucker. He says that he won’t give anything, but before he leaves for his shift the idiot will be all over him.
“Don’t worry, it’s even cooler than Shouto Bakugou.” Two can play that game, Peppermint.
Shouto rolled his eyes, “Before we eat Ki, what kind of sword did you make last night? Is it your quirk?” Shouto questioned as he lowered the kid down back to the ground. Katsuki and Shouto gave up guessing what the kid’s quirk was. It made no fucking sense, it was like Ponytail’s but not.
They also gave him a nickname on accident, but he liked it and wanted them to keep calling him that. It slipped out when Shouto was talking about the adoption papers and he addressed him as Ki. The bugger heard it and was more than pleased.
“Yup! It’s called Stardust. I can make anything I want out of stardust, but it’ll return to the stars once the thing I make feels like it served its purpose. Oh! I can also do this really cool thing to the sky, so you can see what I see to find which star’s dust to use!” No wonder it literally took hours for his husband to put this kid to sleep. He’s made for the nightlife. Shouto and Katsuki followed him out to their balcony, he reached his arms out, wiggled his hands as a signal to be carried. Katsuki picked Ki up, he clasped his hands together.
“Bring out the night, send out the stars, fill them with helium to let them shine throughout the night,” Ki chanted, his eyes opened up glowing like a light from a glow stick.
“Look! I did it! Now you can see what I see!” He pointed to the sky. This kid sees this every night? That must be mesmerizing. Katsuki doesn’t want to take his eyes off of it, “Wow,” Shouto and him breathed out at the same time.
“You see this every freakin’ night kid?” Katsuki asked, his eyes still glued to the sky. It looked like a scene from a movie. Fuck this kid was going to have a fucking fun Valentine’s Day when he’s older.
“It’s going to go away soon, it only lasts for a couple minutes,” Ki warned as the sky faded into nothing once more. The city lights blocking out any illumination of the sky. Ki was slowly becoming a major part of their lives. Everything they did was revolving around him. It’s only been a week and he’s already made a huge impact. Is this what a child does to someone?
Shouto touched his shoulder, “We should eat now, you have a shift soon right?”
“Yeah, yeah. No clingy koala bear business!” The blonde snapped as they made their way back inside, and slide the door behind them shut.
“You hear that, Ki?” The kid shook his head. This was a joke, “I was talkin’ to you, Halfie!” Katsuki set Ki down in his spot at the table.
“Is the door still open? The wind is awfully loud tonight.” A giggle escaped the younger boy’s lips at Shouto’s joke. He’s married to him. He willingly married him. “Thought I married Shouto, not Pikachu. Still think you get too many ideas from him.”
“Denki has fantastic ideas. You and Jirou are the ungrateful ones.” Oh, him and Earphone’s are the victims here. The cheesy lines are stupid. The cliques are dumb. How is Shouto so impressionable? He doesn’t know. All he knows is that he’ll do everything to make sure Tsukiya will not be alone with Pikachu and Shouto in the same room.
“Will I meet them soon?” Ki spoke up. Katsuki's immediate response was no. He did not want this child to be tainted. He will not allow Tsukiya to be tainted.
“They’re all busy but they’ll make time soon.” How much money do you think Four-Eyes will take to make sure no one has a day off for the next fucking decade?
“You can meet Ponytail, she is the only sane one. Plus she’s your favourite ain’t she?” Katsuki blurted out before he shoved a spoon full of food in his mouth. At least it’s not fucking Deku. If it was Deku, Katsuki wouldn’t know what to do.
“She’s my favourite after you guys!” Ki defended.
Katsuki enjoyed this. He enjoyed eating dinner with the two most important people in his life. The laughter that echoed through the apartment. The sleepy smiles he was faced with when he came home that somehow gave him enough energy to make breakfast. This was something Katsuki didn’t think he would need in his life after making Shouto his. Their life blossomed with colours they didn’t even know existed.
“Are you going to be okay going to a new school in a couple of days?” Ki hummed in response when Shouto switched the conversation topic to something a little more relevant. Katsuki wonders how smart the little bugger is. Who’d he ask to help him out with homework? Shitty Hair would probably tell him Shouto is the better option.
“It’s your first day so we’ll both be dropping you off but Fuyumi will pick you up so we don’t cause a scene. The media is horrible.” There would be no way they would leave the school building without being swarmed by the media. They’re noisy assholes wanting to know every tiny detail. Knowing them they’ll ask for a fucking press conference even if it isn’t necessary.
“They’re going to be a pain in the a--behind to deal with.” This whole no swearing thing as Katsuki biting his tongue to the point he thinks it’ll start to bleed one of these days.
And before they knew it, Tsukiya had his first day of school. The kid is hella shy at first and it made Shouto worry about how he’d act in class with all the attention. But in the end, it all worked out, Tsukiya says he had a good time. The attention was just something he needed to get used to.
The media never failed to shove their mics and questions to the two heroes. Katsuki swears he’ll snap one of these days. After stating they’ll hold a press conference on the matter they backed up seemingly satisfied. Both of them agreed that Tsukiya would stay with Fuyumi while they attended the press conference.
The questions were nothing either of them wanted to answer. The main point they wanted to get across was that they want Tsukiya to continue living like any other normal child. Have a damn normal childhood like every other kid. Shouto knows more than anyone what it’s like being the son of a hero. But at the end of the day, the media is the media. It might take Katsuki lashing out at them a couple of times before they get the fucking hint. Whatever it takes. Katsuki will do it for Tsukiya. The kid meant more to him then he could ever imagine. It was rivalling his love and care for Shouto.
That disaster of a week slowly evolved into a month.
Within that month, Tsukiya made a friend or two he would see occasionally. The adoption process is going well. Caretakers from the orphanage came to check up on Tsukiya seeing he was doing fine and clearly saw the press conference. He met the extras, too, much to Katsuki’s disappointment.
Fucking Four-Eyes said he couldn’t bribe him with anything. The encounter only proved that Fuyumi is the only person he’ll ever trust with his son. But when the bugger met Ponytail he was all over the place. His favourite female hero in the flesh and Katsuki has already mentally noted to tease him about it when he’s older. The way he stuttered on his words and acted like such a fanboy was so fucking funny.
Shouto and his schedules were almost like they were before. Not entirely lined but it was close enough to make sure one of them could take Ki to school and pick him up from Shouto’s sister.
Ki has grown into their hearts a lot faster than either of them expected. That meant naturally their parental instincts would get more intense. Especially when those off chance nightmares got him. The incident traumatized him and Katsuki wants to do everything he can to get rid of the fear of being left alone from that little body of his. But that little body of his had other plans when he came storming into his and Shouto’s bedroom one morning and jumped on their bed.
“Katsu! Sho! Can you train me to be a hero?” Pause. Katsu? Did he just? After calling their names with honorifics he dropped it one day after school and both parents' hearts skipped a beat that they didn’t even process what he said after.
“Katsu.”
“Sho.”
Both of them repeated in their groggy voice. This kid was going to be the death of them one day.
“C-Can I call you guys that?” Ki questioned hiding his face in his hands, “Of course!” the pair said simultaneously. Katsuki slowly registered what he asked them earlier after he said their new nicknames. Hero. Tsukiya wants to be a hero.
“You sure you wanna be a hero, bugger?” Katsuki sat up in his bed and removed his arm from around Shouto’s shoulders. Halfie sat up beside him as he took his hand underneath the sheets. This was a touchy topic. He took a look over at Shouto his messy bedhead hair looking cute as fuck, and the realization hit him of what was going on at the moment. Katsuki started to rub circles with his thumb on Shouto’s hand to keep him calm. He wasn’t his father, Katsuki has reminded him several times about it. He squeezed his hand as he continued to keep him grounded.
“Yes! I wanna be the best hero like Katsu and Sho! I wanna protect the people I care about too while fighting bad guys!” The excitement in his eyes was so prominent. The kid has passion and heart. Getting called Katsu by this soon to be heartthrob will take a bit. But in that instant he could see himself in Ki, he was probably just as enthusiastic in wanting to be a hero when he was that age. Ki better not ask the hag about anything about that shit. It’s hard enough to stop her from turning him into a model like he needed more fucking attention.
“You don’t have to. But if you really want to we’ll train you in moderation. We’ll train you properly.” The way Shouto told him he was wary. It was obvious he didn’t want to be what he feared. But Katsuki promised him years ago he’ll never be that man. He’ll be Shouto and only Shouto. Katsuki kissed the side of his husband’s head as he felt the temperature in the room get hotter.
“Promise?” Ki raised both his pinkies. Katsuki and Shouto took their free hand and linked their pinkies with his, “Promise.” With that being said, later the same day they took him to Katsuki’s house so they could start with the basics.
“When you make things out of stardust, is it like Creati’s where you need to know the chemical composition?” Shouto questioned as the three of them stretched on the grass. It felt almost nostalgic training in his own backyard again. The amount of weekends Katsuki would spend here until nightfall blasting aluminum cans.
Tsukiya shook his head, “Nuh-huh, because it’s not using our world’s material, it’s made of stardust that’s why the object disappears. I imagine it and the stars give me what I desire. It’s like wishing upon a star and getting it instantly!”
“Are ya limited to what you can make?” Katsuki asks afterward. If the kid can make whatever he wanted with minimal consequences it’ll be strong as fuck. Ki stood straight up and took a moment to genuinely think about the question. Did he want to be a hero before he met them?
“The more I make the more sleepy I get,” Ki responded before he continued to stretch out his arms.
Katsuki took a glance at Shouto who he knew was the most uneasy about this, “Okay, we’ll keep that in mind from now on.” He’s being awfully conscious. Katsuki wanted to say something about how the past isn’t going to repeat itself; that Ki isn’t going to end up like Shouto’s fucked up eldest brother. Ki wasn’t going to have the same experience when training like Shouto did. But Katsuki held against it and bit his tongue.
Katsuki walked closer towards his husband. Coming up from behind him and kissing the back of his head before he whispered, “It’ll be okay, Shouto. I’m here.” He felt his body relax as he kissed Shouto’s temple and he felt a shaky breath escape his lips.
“Katsu, Sho, do you do that every time before you train or fight bad guys?” Shouto chuckled, not answering his question. If there’s one thing he missed when Ki wormed his way into their heart and in their life, it is that he can’t have his husband all to himself when he wants anymore. Katsuki actually has to plan for it. It's fucking annoying sometimes.
That month slowly became two, then three and almost four. The words they’ve wanted to hear still haven’t been said but there’s no rush. Whenever Ki was comfortable to call them as he pleased. The three of them were on the roof of their building watching the sunset pass waiting for the stars to come out. Shouto claimed that Katsuki hasn’t done anything romantic in months, and so here they are. If fucking dinner on the roof, while the sun is setting, isn’t romantic, then Katsuki doesn’t fucking know what is.
The blankets covered the three of them as the pillows acted as support creating a tee-pee. Ki actually helped him because Katsuki had to make the actual dinner. The amount of times he’s made soba was more than Katsuki would like to admit. He picked up one of the pillows but just as he did his ears sharpened to the child’s voice beside him, “Papa there’s something I want to do?”
The fuck?
Did he just address him as his father figure?
Oh. Fuck.
The pillow that was in Katsuki’s hands was no longer existent.
“Daddy is something wrong with Papa he blew up the pillow!” He watched as his husband’s eyes widened. In a matter of seconds, ice spread across the roof. Katsuki thinks freezing an entire building is worse than blowing up a pillow.
“Daddy your ice!” Tsukiya reminded his Daddy. Shouto regained his composure and melted the ice he created with his left side. The bugger looked back and forth between them, his eyes darted every which way, “Did I say something weird?” No, all you did was address us like actual parents. Not a fucking big deal or anything. Katsuki thought to himself as he hummed.
“No, no, no, not at all. What did you want to ask Papa?” Shouto reassured him. Katsuki wasn’t sure if he liked the way Shouto said Papa more or Ki. Either way he knew the loser did it on purpose to see the tips of his ears glow red.
Game on, IcyHot.
“You can ask Da-ddy too, bugger,” Katsuki retaliated, over announcing “daddy”, he made sure he hit each syllable. The blush on his husband’s cheeks showed the effect of the simple word.
”Mama Mitsuki showed me a family picture of Papa that he looked super good in! But she said someone painted it. The picture beside it was the actual taken photo.” Course, the fucking old hag showed him that. It was the only family picture he actually liked when he was a teenager.
“I have that on my phone. I used to have it as my lock screen when we first started dating.” Shouto did fucking do that. Katsuki was hella annoyed with him about it because he looked so fucking posh. The picture just screamed, “I have money”. So in return, he made his lock screen a picture of the dork when he was asleep. It was only fucking fair.
”C-Could we get one?” A family picture. Of them.
“Why the hell not? The old ha-witch could probably sort something out like that again.” Maybe he’s too soft for him. This could be an issue in the near future. He can’t give the kid everything he wants all the damn time.
“Mhm-hm, it sounds nice. We can put it up somewhere,” Shouto flashed him a soft smile. Did he secretly want that too? The darkness of the night came over them as the vale of stars started to peek through. Golden hour passed as the glow of the nightlife made itself present. His family looks good in any lighting.
“Make a wish, make a wish!” Ki pointed to the sky as he spotted the first few stars shining in the distance. A familiar nursery rhyme filled his ears, “Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight; wish I may, wish I might, may my wish come true tonight.” An old nursery rhyme he hasn’t heard in ages. Shouto looked like he had never heard it in his lifetime as he closed his eyes too. Could Katsuki make his wish come true too?
Katsuki doesn’t think he needs to make one. He already has everything he’s ever wanted. What more could he ask of the universe at this point?
“What’d you two wish for?” Katsuki was first to speak when Shouto and Ki finally opened their eyes.
“Soba.” Peppermint can’t be fucking serious, he just had fucking soba.
“You just freaking had it!” Was it not good enough? No, Katsuki knows this trick. Shouto would say Katsuki didn’t make soba like his sister so he would inevitably make more for him. He’s not falling for it again.
“More soba. You didn’t wish for anything, did you?” Katsuki face palmed, before he responded to Shouto’s question, “What’s left to wish for?” That sounded way too cheesy. Shouto rubbed off on him again. He hated it when he let it slip because he knew in two hours' time he’ll ask him to say it again, and again like a broken record.
“How ‘bout you Ki?” Katsuki asked. He fidgeted with the blanket, he kept his eyes down unable to see his face. Ki gripped the blanket even tighter as his fists balled up, “F-For Papa and Daddy not to disappear.”
A kid shouldn’t have thoughts like that. Not at that age. Katsuki’s heart sank at the thought that Tsukiya still believed that this was all a dream still. That he and Shouto would walk out of his life one day. Katsuki would die for his son, but now even if he’s on death’s door he’ll strike a deal with the devil if that meant keeping himself and the ones he loved alive.
“We’ll always come home.” A soft look spread across Shouto’s face as he said those words to him. He lifted up Tsukiya’s head and brought him into a hug. Ki nestled his head into Shouto’s chest. Katsuki scooted closer toward the two, wrapped his arm around his husband’s shoulders, and kissed the top of Ki’s head, “You think a damn villain is gonna take down Dynamight? Try again.”
“We’ll always come back home to you. For you,” Shouto said, as he stroked Tsukiya’s hair in comfort. “Because now we’re fighting for more than just ourselves and each other. We’re fighting to protect you.” He finished. Katsuki loved it when Shouto was like this, his stoic persona would fade and the caring, gentle side of him would kick in, making him fall in love all over again with him.
“You don’t need no damn stardust to make that wish come true in an instant,” Katsuki told him softly. Maybe can give everything the kid wanted after all.
