Promises

Summary:

“I want you to promise me something.” Jotaro looked down at Kakyoin.

“What?”

“When this is all over, what with… DIO and everything, I want you to try and quit smoking. And I’ll help you find another way of relieving your stress and anger.”

Work Text:

Kakyoin shot up off his bed in shock, he was having a bad dream, but he couldn't remember what it was about as he groggily looked around. He was still in the hotel room he was sharing with Jotaro. From the looks of it, it was nearly dusk. He must have fallen asleep as soon as they arrived in their room. He looked out to the balcony of the room and saw his friend sitting out there. Back slumped in a chair with his legs up on the banister, smoking a cigarette. He really wished Jotaro would stop smoking, he wasn’t even an adult yet. Although, maybe this trip was making Jotaro grow up much faster than he would like to admit. Even with that said, the damage it could do to him in the long run… Kakyoin thought of an idea. He reached his hand out towards the balcony.

    “Hierophant… green.” He muttered quietly under his breath. A silvery green tentacle slithered across the floor and slipped between the balcony door and the wall, slowly making its way behind and above Jotaro. As soon as he was close enough, Kakyoin snatched the cigarette right out of Jotaro’s hand and threw it over the banister. Jotaro shot up out of his chair, knocking it over and looking around frantically, murder written in his eyes. Kakyoin stifled his laughter as best as he could, but as soon as Jotaro saw Hierophant’s tentacle, he shot daggers at Kakyoin through the window and grumpily sat back in his chair.

Kakyoin stood and headed out to the balcony to join his friend, all while retracting Hierophant back to the recesses of his mind. “You’re no fun, Kujo.” Kakyoin teased. Jotaro grunted and started to pull out his box of cigarettes. Kakyoin reached out and grabbed his friend's wrist. “Did you care to think that that was a request to not do that anymore?” Jotaro stared back at his friend, Kakyoin could see the gears turning behind Jotaro’s eyes for a moment. Jotaro motioned to put the cigarettes back into his coat, and Kakyoin let go of him and kneeled next to Jotaro.
    “Sorry.” Jotaro muttered.

    “Don’t apologize to me, apologize to your lungs.” He joked.

    “Hmph.” They sat in silence for a moment and watched cars drive by beneath them.

    “Why do you do it?” Kakyoin asked.

    “Do what?”

    “Smoke, you oaf,” He chuckled. Jotaro shrugged but was still quiet for a moment.

    “I guess it’s so I’m not so angry all the time,” He paused. “It calms me down.”

    “Why are you angry?” Another shrug. Jotaro never really talks about himself very often, so Kakyoin thought he should pay special attention. “Have you tried anything else other than smoking?”

    “Not really.” Kakyoin thought for a moment, and he had an idea. He shifted his weight so that he was kneeling in front of Jotaro now, so that he could look at him.

    “I want you to promise me something.” Jotaro looked down at Kakyoin.
    “What?”

    “When this is all over, what with… DIO and everything, I want you to try and quit smoking. And I’ll help you find another way of relieving your stress and anger.”

    “I never said I was stressed.”

    “You didn’t need to.” Jotaro was quiet for a moment. He sighed a beat later.

    “I’ll think about it.” Well, it was better than no at least.

    “Fair enough.” Kakyoin stood up and dusted himself off. “Will you come in? It’s getting chilly.” Silence.

    “In a minute.”

~~~
It was a couple of days after the defeat of DIO, and Jotaro was finally back home with his mom, who was recovering very quickly from her illness. Jotaro was even more silent than usual since they came back, only returning with three of their original six members, one of them being his best, and only friend. He sat out on his front porch thinking about the events that occurred in just one month. It was hard to grasp, even after it was over. Jotaro clenched his jaw and reached into his coat for his cigarettes. A memory of a familiar voice spoke in his head.
I want you to promise me something.
He gritted his teeth, but sighed a moment later and pulled the cigarettes out of his coat. The box was crumpled and worn. He pulled a bent cigarette out and held it between his fingers. He felt a burning sensation in his eyes, and crushed the cigarette in his hand and threw it as hard as he could. He crushed the box in his other hand and threw it onto the ground. Jotaro breathed heavily and felt his heart pounding, but he slowly began to relax. He looked back at the crumpled box. I should have just said I promised before, but I promise I’ll stop now. I promise I’ll stop for you.
