My Hero

Summary:

You're late on the way to your interview at Might Towers! Luckily someone's there to help.

Chapter Text

This morning you could feel your entire body buzzing with nerves. You had been waiting for weeks now for your interview at Might Towers, and today was finally the day. From where you were standing you could clearly see the signature dual-ringed globe perched high in the sky. The sun glistened against the globe, calling to you like a homing beacon. You didn’t have to worry about getting lost when you had it leading the way. Which was tremendously good considering you already had enough to worry about today.... Your appearance, your resume, your personal skills, your… well everything.

The position you were interviewing for wasn’t the most exciting job in the world. It was an assistant job in the human resources department, something you were more than qualified to do. You had worked in HR for a few years now and had glowing letters of recommendations from previous employers. Still… you were nervous.

Working at Might Tower had been a dream of yours for a while now. Ever since All Might helped you… you wanted to help others in need as well. Your quirk wasn’t really hero material, so you decided to work for heroes instead. Now you had the opportunity to work for the hero that had been your inspiration for the past few years.

You got this. You affirmed yourself. You got this. You got this. You-

Your thoughts were broken by the sudden twisting of your ankle.

“AH!”

The sidewalk moved rapidly towards you as your balance betrayed you. You squeezed your eyes shut, accepting your fate, but it never came. For a second you thought you were floating in the air, but as reality set back in you felt a large hand grasping onto your arm. They carefully lifted you up until both of your feet were balanced and you let out a sigh of relief.

“Are you alright?” A man’s voice asked from behind you. Without thinking, you try to turn around to answer your savior. However, you’re quickly stopped by the searing pain radiating from your ankle.

“Fuck!” The sware slipped through your teeth before you could stop it. You tried to ease the pressure of your ankle by lifting it quickly, but it left you hobbling on one foot.

“Here, let me help.” The man said gently.

He immediately came to your side and slipped your arm over his crouched shoulders. This way you could lean your weight off your bad ankle and onto him. As he led you out of the way of other pedestrians you got your first good look of your savior. His bright yellow bangs hung limply from his head and down across his cheeks. The bright color was contrasted by the harsh shadows of his face. His cheeks were sunken and pulled tightly across bones, giving him a skeleton like appearance. His eyes were similarly sunken in and would have been completely lost, but the shocking blue of his irises managed to pierce their way through. You also noticed that he must have been extremely tall, as he had to lower himself quite a bit to let you rest your weight on his shoulders.

Despite his frail appearance, he easily glided the two of you to a stairway stoop. “Alright I’m going to sit us down now okay?” He asked and you just nodded your head. “Okay… slowly…” He began lowering the both of you until your butt hit the cement and your ankle cried in relief. Now you were able to properly turn to address him,

“Thanks for saving me. I really would have ate shit if you hadn’t been there.” Your words weren't the most … eloquent. But you had already sweared in front of him and almost wrecked yourself in front of him so nothing to lose right?

Luckily he found your choice of words funny and chuckled, “No problem.”

His rumbling chuckle made you smile. For a moment you were struck by how rich and deep his voice was despite being so skinny. He sounded like he could be like… some sensual radio host or… something.

Turning away from him the moment, you took stock of your ankles and groaned at the sight. You had found your culprit. The small kitten heel had almost completely snapped off your right shoe. Serves you right for spending the bare minimum on formal work shoes. Great. Now you would have to do the interview barfoot. Would they notice? Of course they would... You checked the time on your watch and groaned again. No point in worrying about your shoes if you couldn’t even make it there on time. You had to be at Might Towers in ten minutes or you could kiss the job goodbye.

“What’s wrong?” He had been watching you, his forehead creased with concern. The frustration, pain, and anxiety was all rolling off you in waves and you knew he could probably feel it too. Side effect of your quirk.

“Everything.” You muttered. You were being childlike, you knew that, but today had quickly gone to shit. “My ankle’s twisted, my shoes are broken, and it looks like I’m going to be late and barefoot for my interview! At Might Towers! My dream job!” you sighed. You wanted to scream. You wanted to make a deal with the devil to redo the last five minutes of your life. You wanted to… go home and wallow. The frustration that had rolled off you melted into sorrow as you began to come into terms with reality.  “Guess I’ll keep dreaming… maybe I’ll get offered another interview next year.” You said with a smile, trying to be hopeful despite everything.

The man next to you hummed in consideration and suddenly you felt embarrassed. You just unloaded on this guy and he probably just wishes he’s let you fall instead of getting caught up in your spiral. You were about to apologize when he cut you off.

“How attached to these shoes are you?” He asked thoughtfully. You paused, absolutely confused by his odd question.

“Not at all.”

“Good. May I?” He said gesturing to your ankle. Um what? You looked up at him absolutely dumbstruck by his odd questions. He was smiling softly and something in his eyes made you trust him. You slowly nodded your head.

He gently lifted your foot with the broken heal and quickly snapped it off. Then reached for the other foot and then swiftly snapped that heel off as well. Damn he did that so easily… cheap shoes.

In the end you were left with a pair of matching plain black flats. You were struck by his simple genius.

“Well at least now you won’t be barefoot for your interview!” He said enthusiastically and you had to laugh.

“No! I guess not!” You said smiling. One problem solved. One to go… the edges of your smile slowly turned down. “I’ll never make it one time though…”

“We can try.” He said and stood up offering you his arm, “If you leaned on me, do you think you could make the walk to Might Towers?”

You nodded confidently. You would try anything if it meant saving this interview.

Cautiously you stood up, being mindful about your hurt ankle, and took the arm he offered. Despite his appearance, he felt solid as you leaned your weight against him. He was patient with you as you hobbled your way down the sidewalk.

“So…” He started filling up your companionable silence, “Might towers eh?”

You nodded your head up and down enthusiastically, “I know! I couldn't believe it either when I landed this interview.”

“Couldn’t believe it?” He asked incredulously, “What do you mean by that?”

Your cheeks flushed a bit from your own lack of self confidence. “Well you know… the best of the best work for All Might. I mean he is number one for a reason…”

“Ah, I see what you mean! This would be a remarkable move in your career then.”

“Yeah that’s true…” but his words didn’t settle well for you. You didn’t want to work for All Might to climb a few steps on some dumb corporate ladder.  “... But it’s more than that.”

“Oh?” Curiosity covered his tone.

“Yeah!” You said more confidently, “I mean yeah you’re right working at the number one hero agency would look good on anyone’s resume but it’s not about that! I want to work for All Might because I want to help him help others. Even if the only way I can help is filing paperwork and answering emails.”

From the corner of your eye you could see him smiling. “That’s very noble of you.” The words were odd and on anyone else they would have sounded sarcastic, but you could tell he was being genuine.

Slowly, and with his help, you arrived at the front entrance of Might Tower. You were still late… but at least you were here.

“Thank you so much. I really wouldn’t have made it here without your help.”

His lips pulled back into another smile and you couldn’t believe moments ago you would have described his appearance as skeletal. His smile had so much life and warmth behind it.

“Hey don’t even worry about it! But my job’s not done here yet… let’s get you inside.” You tried to refuse his help, telling him he had already done enough for you but nevertheless he took your arm. “I insist.”

He ushered you through the doors and you were immediately glad you had his support to lean on. The lobby was just as grand as you imagined… The shock and awe on your face must have been noticeable because you felt him chuckle beside you.

With every step you took towards the desk you tried to reign in your emotions until finally you felt professional and in control. He must have felt it too because he began to straighten his posture ever so slightly until he was raised to his full height.

The last few steps you had to take on your own. You removed your arm slowly and he understood. Your ankle still hurts like hell, but you walked on it anyway and pushed through the pain. You didn’t even wince once as you approached the desk.

“Hi there,” you said, catching the attention of the receptionist. You couldn’t help but notice how pretty she was. Her shiny blonde hair fell in perfect curls down to her shoulders and she had sharp green eyes and cherry red lips. “My name is (Y/n)(L/n) and I’m here for my interview with Ms. Nakada at one o’clock?” you said trying to sound confident, but you could hear the hopeful edge in your voice.

Uninterested by you, she looked back down at the monitor in front of her.

“M’am do you know what time it?” She asked a bit passive aggressively.

You did know what time it was. It was ten past, you were horrendously late, and now you were wondering to yourself why you even bothered trying. It was silly, of course they wouldn’t let you interview.

“I understand.” You said proud that your voice still sounded strong despite everything else feeling weak. It was a long shot but at least you tried.

“I’m sure you do. Now if you don’t mind…” her voice carried off as she noticed something behind your shoulder. In a second, the lady perked up in her chair and plastered a sweet smile onto her previously bored face. “Good afternoon Mr. Yagi!”

Your walking companion- Mr. Yagi - walked up to the reception desk to stand by you.

“Good afternoon Mai,” He said smiling, though you could see the warmth didn’t quite reach his eyes like before, “I trust you’re taking good care of my friend here? Shame we didn’t get here on time, must have gotten distracted on the walk over. I’m sure Nakada doesn’t mind. If she does tell her it was my fault.”

Mai looked back at you, not missing a beat with her smile, “Yes of course! I’ll call Ms. Nakada right away to let her know you're on your way up. Do you need directions to where you’re going?”

What? You tried to steady yourself against your own emotional whiplash. You… you still had your interview.

“N-no thank you. I know the way.”

She nodded and picked up the phone to call Nakada. Which left you and Yagi standing next to each other. You looked up at him, and didn’t even know what to say. You were so incredibly thankful for this man in front of you.

Overcome with emotions, your quirk began to act up again. Happiness, relief, and gratitude all rolled off you in waves towards the man in front of you. Finally you found the words,

“You’re my hero.”

It was true. He had saved you from this horrible day. Saved you from a broken shoe and uninterested receptionist and managed to get you your dream interview. He was your hero.

“Thank you,” he smiled again for you, “Good luck on your interview! I hope to see more of you around here.”

With that, he waved and walked towards the giant ornate Might elevator, swiped a keycard, and stepped in. As the doors closed he gave you one more encouraging thumbs up before he was hidden from view.

...Okay that just happened.

You obviously didn’t know the first thing about the stranger that led you here, but worrying about that was for another time.

“Ms. Nakada is ready upstairs for you!”
