Work Text:
It was 1am and Jun’s phone was silent. They sighed, changing for bed and eyeing the black screen. Sure it was right after a holiday, but everyone else got lots of birthday messages, why wouldn’t they? They’d gotten a message from their family at home, and a few friends who were all drunk at a Christmas party they’d been to earlier that day. With a resigned sight jun threw the phone on their charger and went to bed. // Jun woke up to their alarm. Slapping their phone screen to turn off the alarm, they came out of their sleep haze enough to realize they hadn’t set an alarm. Pulling their phone to them they saw notification after notification pouring in. “Happy birthday Joon, wishing you a happy and prosperous year!” “Hi Jun, just wanted to say happy birthday! I’m glad to have you in my life, I hope your day is filled with joy and light.” “Jun!!! Happy birthday!!! Live your best baby!!!” Message after message, some from close friends and others from people barely acquaintances. Jun had to wipe away a tear and massage their cheeks from how broadly they were smiling. It was so unexpected but so so happy. It wasn’t until they realized that one of their friends band mates had sent in a message that Jun had to message a friend asking what was happening. “Ash, just got a birthday message from Taehyung’s band mates, did you tell them it was my birthday??” “No, did you?” “No!” The three typing bubbles appeared and disappeared too much for Jun’s comfort. They chewed their thumbnail, switching between the cursed dots and new messages flooding in. Finally, a text from Ash. “I think it was Taehyung honestly. I know you were bummed out last night about not getting many birthday messages, you were sad posting on main, and I think I saw that Taehyung reacted to it too before I went to bed. I got a text this morning from him saying “It’s Jun’s birthday! They’ve worked really hard this year, and I want us all to send a positive birthday message so they can have a very good, successful next year!” I sort of ignored it since we talked last night and all of us send an extra message after midnight, but I don’t know how many people he sent it out to. Just food for thought.” Jun chewed their lip thoughtfully. It was the best explanation they had, seeing as they didn’t always post their birthday online for EVERYONE to see, and some of these people were more Taehyung’s friends than theirs. Just as they were mulling over how to approach Tae, their phone chimed with a voice message. “Speak of the devil,” Jun muttered, hitting play. Taehyung’s voice rang out through their speakers. “Hi Jun, happy birthday! I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday and I hope you have a wonderful auspicious next year! You worked so hard this year, met those challenges head on, and I know it was hard but you’ve grown from it so I truly believe this next year will be the best yet because of you!! Have a happy birthday dearest!”
