The Office of my Sister

Summary:

A poem about Maya Fey and a certain event in her life

Work Text:

The office of my sister dark and devoid of life
We’d agreed to meet for burgers
I knock, I enter, I call for my sister.
She wouldn’t be out, would she?

The phone that day
She’d asked me to help her out.
I’m always glad to help out
And there’s free food in the deal too!

I only just got my own place,
It’s nice,
But it’s lonely.
I don’t know if I’m ready to be alone yet.

At my age,
Don’t I have to be?

Ready, that is.
To be alone.

I can take comfort in my sister’s calls!
I can take comfort in her presence and her help
And her wallet with which she buys burgers.

I really want to go get that burger.

Where is she?

It’s not like her to change plans without telling me.

Maybe she went out and is running late.

I went further into the office.
There’s a couch in there I can sit on.
While I wait.

I went further into the office.
I saw her.
On the floor.
Slumped against
The wall.

Forehead soaked in blood
Hair in her face.
Mess on the floor.
Papers scattered
Lamp shattered
She did not move
Do you hear me sister?
Do you hear?

Her chest rose and fell
And struggled to
And struggled to
And struggled to

Her apprentice shows up,
Equally shocked by the scene
Together,
Eyes and mouths hollow,
Hopeless
As she slips away.

She’s cold, oh my god don’t be cold
Don’t be cold
Don’t go

I’m not ready to be alone, Mia
And I didn’t get to say goodbye.

Suddenly, flashing lights
Men surround me

And take me away

Please

Don’t be cold,
Don’t be cold,
Don’t go

The office of my sister
Dark and devoid of life.
