Work Text:
Jungkook was a child of the stars through and through. Jimin had always joked that if no one checked on Jungkook for a long time, one day he was going to float away to rest between the folds of the universe. He already shone as bright as the night stars, if not brighter. Small doodles always littered his arms. Constellations and planets adorning his hands until he grew up and got them tattooed. A permanent reminder, he had called it, that they are all children of the universe.
When Jungkook asked Jimin to go with him stargazing, he agreed right away. Jimin loved seeing his boyfriend light up, loved seeing him slowly slip back into his dialect as he got excited. Jungkook was like a ball of light, a ball of energy vibrating at a high frequency. Big doe eyes and so much love barely contained, if at all. His fascination with the universe only evoked more admiration and love in the older boy’s heart.
So they got prepared. Jimin made some sandwiches while Jungkook got them drinks and prepared the trunk of his car. He filled it with blankets and pillows, only stopping when he deemed it soft enough. By night time they were in Jungkook’s car and ready to go.
Jimin leaned back and closed his eyes, the cold breeze hitting his face. Jungkook’s voice humming along to the song on the radio the only sound in the car. Jungkook has been trying to teach him how to drive for a while now, but Jimin wasn’t all that interested. He liked this more, sitting in the passenger seat, feeling the cold air hit his face, picking the songs they listen to when he wants to. All the good things about driving around without the added stress. For now, at least, he was content with taking the bus or having Jungkook drive him around as his means of transportation.
The spot that Jungkook picked was as far away from the city as they could go. Jimin watched as the scenery changed, watched as the stars came out to play. No one was there, only the two of them and the stars above them. They parked the car and went around to sit in the trunk.
Jungkook loved the night, blurred edges and softened lights, but he absolutely despised the cold, an endearing quality if you ask Jimin. They came prepared though, Jimin wrapped his arm and a blanket around them the moment they settled down. Jungkook burrowed even further in his embrace. Jimin looked at the younger’s eyes and saw the universe reflected in them. Somedays, Jimin thinks that it’s the other way around. The universe looked at Jungkook’s eyes and saw so much wonder in them, saw stardust and nebulas and love and wanted a copy for herself.
Maybe he was staring. Maybe Jungkook got a little closer, small smile and gentle eyes. His eyes always pulled Jimin in, made him feel like he was floating high up in the sky. The younger rubbed their noses together, kissed Jimin’s forehead. Jimin made a sound in the back of his throat and reached up to kiss him, and when their lips met, he understood why galaxies collide. Jungkook's soft lips on his, his hand cradling Jimin’s cheeks, all were gone as soon as they came.
“We’re here to watch the stars, hyung, not stare at each other.” Jungkook laughed, pulling away, pulling back, taking Jimin’s hand in his. Jimin doesn’t see the problem. That’s exactly what he was doing.
Out here, away from the blaring lights of the city, the stars shone brighter than ever. Jungkook raised their entwined hands to trace over constellations, telling Jimin about their names, the stories behind them, how they earned their place in the night sky.
Jimin tried to keep up, he really did, but his eyes kept drifting over, kept seeking those doe eyes. Watching the small upward tilt of Jungkook’s lips as he talked seemed more magical than the whole universe ahead of them.
“You know hyung,” Jungkook started, lowering their hands and cradling them in his lap. “Stargazing makes me feel so small. Like we are a dot floating in this-this abyss, this nothingness of burning stars. It always makes me think what use is this whole, wide universe when we are so, so small, so insignificant.”
His eyes twinkled, terrestrial meeting celestial, drowning Jimin in faraway galaxies.
“But then I think that if the stars didn’t align, if the stars didn’t collapse, didn’t fall then who knows what life would have been like.” He looks at him, and Jimin believes that he will never get used to the nebulas swimming in his boyfriend’s eyes, will never get used to the starry nights and burning suns and black holes that have taken residence in Jungkook’s gaze, drawing Jimin in indefinitely.
It was almost like the boy gave so much of himself to the universe, so much that they were starting to become one. “Us meeting, that is fate, hyung.” He sounded so sure of himself, so different from the little boy that Jimin met years before. Jimin felt warm all over. Pride and love and admiration mingling together in the mess that was his heart.
Jimin kissed his cheek, a small, fleeting touch. He rested his forehead against Jungkook's, both boys smiling like they shared a secret with the whole universe as their witness. Jimin leaned in once, leaving a kiss at the corner of the younger’s mouth.
“Hyung.” Jungkook’s eyes held the up skies, held Jimin’s world. His touch as gentle as whispered confessions. Jimin closed his eyes.
“Hm?”
Jungkook leaned in, finally leaned in. Everything about Jungkook was untethered expect his kisses. Jungkook kisses with ferocity, with his everything. His kisses were grounding, passionate, yet never losing the softness that incased his every waking moment. Jimin’s hands shot up to tangle in Jungkook’s hair. He could feel Jungkook’s thumb caressing his cheek.
“Can’t believe we drove all the way here to kiss," Jimin said as soon as they separated, his lips stretching into a big smile.
“We didn’t," Jungkook whined, hiding his face in Jimin's neck. "We came here to stargaze, hyung.”
“Just joking, love.” Jimin laughed and patted his hair. Jungkook just groaned in response.
Jungkook huffed and stood up, moving to open the door to the backseat, wanting to get the sandwiches that Jimin made. Somehow, it became a hard feat when the older boy followed him, stealing kisses and leaving tickles here and there. They laugh and laugh until their stomachs hurt, until they were falling to the ground and toppling over each other. Jungkook’s giggles sweeter than any song Jimin has ever heard, ever could hear.
If the universe was watching, she would see two of her children so in love, so in awe of each other. If the universe was listening, she would hear two of her children make promises bigger than themselves, fully knowing they might not be able to keep them.
Looking at the Jungkook, Jimin felt invincible, felt like the flowers blooming in winter and the first drop of rain, felt like the wind rustling the leaves and a cry loud and clear, meant for whoever would listen. Jungkook’s hand in his, on his face, felt like home, felt like warmth and love tangible and alive and reaching out to him.
Jimin has always thought that love, like other things, had a limit, thought that you could love until a certain point and then you couldn’t love more than that. But now that he thinks about it, perhaps, love is like the universe expanding, always expanding. Perhaps, love, like the universe, can be overwhelming at times, can be all-consuming, can engulf you whole. Perhaps, with Jungkook by his side, Jimin wouldn’t mind much, would seek the closeness, the warmth of a burning sun.
