Megumi pressed his palms to his eyes as he laid on his side in bed. He pulled the blanket softly over his face as if to get away from his thoughts. He didn’t want to wake you as slept beside him, deep in your dreams, vulnerable and innocent. He shifted in bed to face you, letting out a small sigh. He gently moved hairs out of your face and tucked them behind your ear. A shiver went through his body as he made contact with your skin, how warm it was against his cold hands.
His mind began to race as he silently admired your features. His eyes fell on yours, closed behind your eyelids, remembering how they shone in the sunlight or when you talked about a specific hobby you liked or when the sun became a perfect blend of purple hues and oranges. He closed his eyes and smiled, knowing how your eyes brighten up at the smallest of things. How you made sitting under a tree and watching butterflies fly on the field such an interesting feat.
He opened his eyes, a smile still plastered on his lips. His eyes stayed fixed on your soft face, thoughts still coming to him, rapidly and not leaving him alone. He remembered how your nose scrunched when you laughed at one of Itadori’s jokes, or how you scrunched them and closed your eyes when you found something disgusting with Nobara. He loved how your cheeks shone when you laughed, how he would catch a glimpse of your dimples before your hand went up to cover your mouth.
Then Megumi frowned. He didn’t understand why you didn’t like your dimples or your laugh or your smile. To him, they were the best parts about you, I mean, they are what make you unique, right? He laid there in silence, on his side, watching your chest rise and fall under your arms, your hands covering your face. Megumi loved your dimples, how he could poke your cheeks and there would be an indent to invite his finger. He loved your smile, no matter how crooked or unpleasing you thought it looked, he thought it was perfect. He loved your laugh, despite how you think you sound like an animal, it made him smile even more, it showed him that you were real, human.
His gaze fell to your hands. He reached for them gently and intertwined your fingers softly, making no noise or interruption in the dark bedroom. Your hands were warm and soft compared to his. They curled with a type of elegance and it fascinated Megumi. He gently rubbed his thumb across your hand, still loving your simplicities.
He fell in love with all of your “imperfections” as you would call them. He loved how you were just, you. There was no other word for it really. Dull moonlight lightly pressed against the curtains, giving a soft, white shine on your face. Megumi sighed.
How? The simple, one worded question popped in his head. How did he ever manage to have someone like you? How did he manage to convince you to stay by his side? No, he knew you decided to stay. But why? Attachments were dangerous and would only leave you hurt in the end. But maybe that’s a pain he’s willing to bear. Waking up everyday just to see you by his side is enough to keep going.
You grumbled in your sleep and moved your hand to rub your eyes, but found fingers tangled in yours. In a state in the middle of dreaming and being awake, you groaned and moved your other hand, scrunching your nose and rubbing your eyes.
“Megumi?” You spoke in a groggy voice. “Are you okay?” You knew that sometimes he couldn’t sleep at night.
Megumi looked at you with a gentle expression, watching the dim moonlight bounce off your hair, your cheeks, the outline of your shoulders. Megumi said nothing, but he pulled your hand and placed it on his cheek, humming softly. You smiled and rubbed your thumb across his cheek, feeling its smooth, cold surface.
You grabbed your hand back for a brief moment to pull the blanket over his shoulder, and then placed it right back on Megumi’s face. He smiled, knowing he didn’t have to say anything. He was never really good at speaking how he felt, so he did it with actions. His hand laid on top of yours, thumb running across your hand.
You moved a bit closer to him and placed a gentle kiss on his forehead. And there the two of you lay together, Megumi’s thoughts finally coming to a stop when you pressed your foreheads together. Into a deep sleep the both of you fell into in the mellow darkness of the room.
