Work Text:
It was Saturday, meaning café date day. Every Saturday since Bakugo and Tokoyami first started dating they go to Tokoyami's favorite coffee shop and read books, have coffee or tea, and just enjoy their time together. Tokoyami would do the majority of the reading while Bakugo watched him and did homework. Sometimes Bakugo would tutor Tokoyami in math, to keep him from failing, but other than that it was mostly chill. Bakugo even told Tokoyami that he would buy him a book, which made his bird-headed boyfriend’s feather fluff up in joy.
Bakugo noticed the small things that Tokoyami would do In the coffee shop. He would order boba only if he did well on an exam, iced tea, or coffee any other time since it was easy to use with his straw. On warmer days he would get a small cake load but on colder days he would do a small bowl of soup. He would pet Dark Shadow with one hand while holding the book with the other, Dark Shadow alternating between turning the page and nuzzled Bakugo’s hand for pets.
Balugo noticed how his boyfriend’s red eyes would be all he needed to know about the book he was reading. His eyes would remain neutral until something happened, causing his eyes to widen in either surprise or disgust. Bakugo could hear him muttering “how cruel” or soft chuckles as he read along but never wanted to tell Tokoyami he did know just how embarrassed Tokyoami got. When he was too absorbed in the book he would try to take a sip of his drink without hitting his beak on the straw and without looking away which was actually really funny. The odd thing was, even though neither of them said anything, Dark Shadow would chat with Bakugo about how boring the book was or briding Bakugo to buy him a cake pop, it felt comfortable for them.
Even before they started dating Tokoyami was never one to get in the way of others. Even when they were paired up for an assignment he would follow Bakuog’s lead until he felt like there was a better way to do something. Even the way Tokyoami would offer a suggestion it wasn’t in a way that made Bakugo look stupid, but a suggestion on how to better succeed. The first time it happened, Bakugo was surprised at how bold Tokoyami was. It was a practice hostage situation and Bakugo, being Bakugo, wanted to rush in and stop them.
"May I offer a suggestion?”
“What Bird Brain?”
“It is Midoryia and Kirishima who are inside, meaning they will expect you to leap in there and make it physical. If Dark Shadow is able to provide a distraction, we can grab the dummy , get out, and we pass. My only question to you is this, is fighting Midoryia really worth more than passing a rather simple exam?”
Bakugo stared at him before sighing in irritation.
“Fine. We’ll do it your way.”
“ Thank you.”
It was at that moment when Bakugo felt intrigued by Tokoyami. They did in fact pass the test. Later on down the line, Bakugo needed a partner for the English project and something in his bones told him to pick Tokoyami So he did. They spent a week working on ideas and typing up the drafts they began to talk on a slightly deeper level. And they became somewhat friends. Soon Bakugo would go outside and force, not really, Tokoyami to come inside and join his table for lunch or put up with Dark Shadow eating from his plate when Tokoyami sat with Shouji and Koda. He didn’t stop Dark Shadow but just pet his shadowy head.
Then he popped the question. But in a weird Bakugo sort of way. Here’s how it went.
Tokoyami was sitting on his desk chatting with Jiro about music when Bakugo walked up to him, grabbing his hand and pulling him out into the hallway .
“Bakugo stop dragging your classmate!” Iida called out.
Bakugo ignored him.
“Bakugo there Is no need for you to drag me places.”
Bakugo let his hand go and turn to face him.
“Sorry.” the apology caught Tokoyami off guard.
“It is alright. What did you want to talk about? It seems important.”
Bakugo groaned, running his fingers in his hair while trying to think of the words.
“Listen. Just. Fuck. Listen do you wanna...fuck Tokoyami I don’t know how to do this.”
“Bakugo it is fine. As long as no one is hurt it will be fine. Take a breath and try aga-”
“I think I like you okay. Damn it that’s not how I wanted-”
Bakugo was cut off by Tokoyami taking his hand.
“Say it again. Slow.”
“Since we did the project or whatever I...I don’t know I think your cool and attractive and...fuck this is dumb.”
Tokoyami tried to not laugh at Bakugo’s struggling since it was kind of cute.
“ Well, I can not deny that I have also felt an attraction to you Bakugo. The time we have spent together has been nice and I would like to continue. How about we go out for coffee or ramen this weekend or after class on Friday. Less tense setting.”
And there it was. One of the many news reasons why Bakugo was starting to fall for Tokoyami . With just a few words all of the tense stressful energy left the room. His deep voice soothed all of Bakugo’s worries for what was yet to come, making the solution that much more clearer.
“Does the ramen place sell spicy food? If not I’m picking the place.”
“As long as we return to the dorms before curfew I'm sure it will be lovely. Now come on, Iida will come out thinking we are fighting and the last thing we need this morning is a lecture from our dear class president.”
Bakugo was now being lead by Tokoyami to the classroom and right as they were about to reach their classroom Tokoyami let go. His warm fingers now felt cold. Everyone in class began to ask Tokoyami questions all that he calmly avoided. Bakugo was quiet, which was scary, to say the least. Bakugo didn’t blow up at anyone, even Aizawa began to worry for Bakugo. Midoriya was especially worried about his kind of friend but he wasn’t going to say anything about it.
They did go out for dinner that Friday night. It was a short walk to the place and they indeed had spicy food. It was a fun night. They told stories, Dark Shadow did everything to embarrass Tokoyami which partially worked and Bakugo even bought Tokoyami boba. When they walked back to the dorm Bakugo walked Tokoyami to his dorm room, even though they were basically neighbors. Before Tokoyami could thank him for the boba for the third time Bakugo leaned down, kiss his feather cheek, and said goodnight before calmly walking to his room.
Ever since their first date, they were together, not officially labeled, but just the way they looked at each other, how often they would go out on Friday nights or the weekend even working out together in strength training, people knew. Expect for this one girl who tried to ask out Tokoyami since he was "mysterious and cool" when Bakugo stepped in, wrapping his arms around Tokoyami's waist and said and I quote "Bird Man is dating me so either back off or die" in front of the entire cafeteria. Tokoyami couldn't help but smile at Bakugo's jealously.
Now here we are in this moment. Tokoyami slightly buffers frame all cozy in the chair with his story, Dark Shadow taking bites from the cookie while reading along with Tokoyami, he actually seemed to enjoy this book, while Bakugo stared at his boyfriend. He looked absolutely perfect. He wore a purple ribbon around his neck, one of Bakugo’s many gifts, his reading glasses close to his face but far away from the slope of the beak to keep them from falling, a black causal button-down paired with faded dark jeans. His shoes were close to dress shoes but not too fancy. Looking much nicer than Bakugo's band t-shirt, ripped jeans and white sneakers. Bakugo rested his chin on his palm as he leaned back in the tall sunset chair. It was the middle of the mid-morning, the café was mostly empty, minus the pair of them and another couple farther away. Bakugo and Tokoyami would always sit closer to the window when it was nice. He could feel his lips tugging in a smile as he thought of just how many times he wants to see his boyfriend like this. With his heart so full and his mind relaxed he said the one thing he didn’t hear himself say.
“I love you.”
Tokoyami froze, looked up from his book as Dark Shadow began to blush, as best as a shadow could, and wrap his body around Bakugo.
“What?” Tokoyami said as Bakguo beganto realzie what happened.
“I...I said I love you...stupid birdy,” Bakguo tried to become angry but his love-filled voice just wouldn’t let him.
“I love you too, you angry Pompeian,” Tokoyami said as he leaned forward to Bakugo and brushed his beak against his cheek.
