dreams of white lilies and blue skies

Summary:

Lumine's voice is the prettiest and the softest, the only voice that can lure Aether to sleep in these times away from home.

Work Text:

They remember their mother's lullaby. They always brought it with them through their travels and often in under the starry nights they would sing it to each other.

Lumine's voice is the prettiest and the softest, Aether will argue with anyone that says otherwise. She would always sing it to him when he's feeling restless or when sleep evades him. Soft like the wind, but shining brighter than any star, her singing voice always lulled him into a deep sleep. Into their dreamscape of white lilies and blue skies.

500 years past, he forgets.

It's been over 500 years since he's last seen Lumine.

It's been so long since Aether's last heard her voice. So long since he's heard that familiar melody.

He doesn't sleep anymore, he can't sleep. Hasn't slept since he's been torn apart from his sister by Her. So when Aether heard of the traveler with similar looks to him, a wave of emotions washed over him.

Elated to know that Lumine was still alive. That she was searching for him but

There's a sense of dread that lingers. A hint of sadness because of what he is...what he was doing.

Lumine, who tries to see the good in everyone... Can she still be convinced that her big brother still has some good in him?

Even when he's trying to destroy Teyvat?

Would she join him in their clause? Remove herself from this world and the new bonds she's made for him? Maybe it's a stupid bit of hope.

They were travelers of worlds, not destroyers.

Well... Lumine wasn't.

And Aether... Aether won't force her to either. It'll always be her decision, and as her big brother, he'll always support whatever choice she makes.

"Will you sing for me again...one last time Lumi?" He reaches out, weakly brushing the cascading tears from her face. Wet drops fall on his face, all his senses going numb but he couldn't find himself to care.

"...please? Please Lumi?" He coughs and Lumine finally nods. Her voice was still soft, just like he remembered. Even when she hiccups mid-song and chokes out a sob, holding his bleeding body close to her, staining her white dress.

"Thank you..." A small smile forms on his lips, his eyelids start feeling heavy. "We'll reunite again..." I love you, I'm sorry.

Lumine's wails don't reach him when he takes his last breath and closes his eyes.

And finally, after 500 years, he can sleep. He can sleep and dream.

Going to their dreamscape, of white lilies and blue skies.
