Chapter Text
Another day in seasoning city, you pushed through the crowded street keeping your head down as you slide between groups of people none the wiser of the losses they were currently taking. You Y/N are an esper you awakened your powers during an intense fight in middle-school and have been using them to improve your life since. Currently, you were using them to improve your financial status willing people’s wallets out of their pockets and into your own. All was well until suddenly you felt a pressure envelope your whole body, and you were firmly planted where you stood. Something was wrong.
“Well well well, what do we have here?”
You heard a man's voice directly behind you and felt a hand slip into your jacket pocket removing two wallets.
“Master, be careful I’m sensing a strange energy coming from this person.”
“Oh?” A man stepped in front of you he was tall and lean with orange hair. He might even be handsome if his face wasn’t twisted into that smarmy grin.
“Tell me are you an Esper?”
“A what?” He stepped closer leaning down as if you simply hadn’t heard him clearly.
“An Esper, ya know spoon bending all that jazz.” He held up the wallets. “The powers you used to snag these, the powers my student back there is using to hold you in place for this little talk we’re having.”
A child stepped out from behind you hand out aimed at you. The boy was small and incredibly unremarkable looking but the power that'd been sending chills down your spine this entire time was so obviously coming from him, you could see it. This was more than a little shocking, as far as you were concerned there were no other psychics in seasoning city and yet here you were held in place by one that clearly outclassed you despite his age and stature.
Your eyes returned to the man, you didn’t feel anything from him, he appeared to be completely normal ability-wise at least.
“Gonna answer the question?”
“What’s the point, clearly the answer is yes you said it for yourself.”
“True, but I wanted to be sure maybe you were just gifted with exceptionally fast hands.” he paused for a moment. “Either way you obviously have some kind of talent.” reaching into your pockets he pulled out more wallets until his hands were full and your pockets were empty.
“Equally obvious is the fact that you need money soooooo” he dropped the wallets dramatically posing and thrusting a finger in your face "Come work for me!”
“...”
The boy seemed as shocked and confused as you.
“I’m sorry?”
He jumped back flinging his arms open. “Abandon your life of crime and come work for me, Reigen Arataka, new star of the paranormal world!” You were stunned, to say the least, this was by far the strangest interaction you had ever had, and now you were being recruited for some weird TV show???
“I’m not an actor.”
“What?”
“New star of the paranormal world, you’re a performer of some kind?”
He gave you a puzzled look “what no what are yo- I'm an exorcist, this is my student, Mob.” Mob gave you a small wave. His answer did not make more sense but after a bit of back and forth Mob released you and the three of you walked to a nearby café where Reigen explained that the world around us was filled with strange phenomena that he and Mob fought against for the good of humanity.
“In short, we’re exorcists, and I'd like to hire you to be a part-timer at my office.” he gestured towards the boy. "As I’m sure you’ve noticed my student here is rather young, so naturally he has classes to attend and a curfew to adhere to which leaves my hands full for a lot of the day.” “But I don’t know anything about exorcising spirits.” Reigen waved away the completely valid point you had just made explaining that Mob and himself would teach you the ropes, and before you knew it he was frantically shaking your hand.
“Fantastic, I'll see you tomorrow” he slid a card into your hand, and they turned to walk off. “Business casual!” he yelled back over his shoulder and with that, they faded into the crowd.
