Blue Poison sat on one of the benches of the cafeteria. Alone. At night. With a big pile of colorful bags sitting on a table in front of her. Just looking at it made the Anura feel worse, so she leaned in and closed her eyes, making an effort to not let the tears out. What an absolute shit day.
It was Valentine's Day. Not all the operators were interested in this kind of celebration, but most of them made a big fuss, occupating the kitchen at full. Blue had to get her turn weeks early, knowing how chaotic it could be. Her plan was simple: making chocolates for all of her friends and people who had been nice to her this past year. Since not a lot of people wanted to approach the "toxic girl", she was grateful that someone was paying attention to her without making faces or keeping their distance.
But the day came, and quickly became a failure. All the people that she made chocolate for refused politely, making some kind of excuse or faking a sudden deafness when she tried to call out to them. The only person who took one of the chocolates was Kal'tsit, but she knew it was out of kindness, condescending. The pinkette was grateful, but she didn't want to be treated like that.
And the worse part is that the person she wanted to meet the most was out on a mission. On Valentine's Day. Seriously, who had the idea to take people out into the battlefield on such a day?! Well, to be honest, she didn't think Glaucus cared that much about these kinds of celebrations. But she still missed her, and she had a gift to give her too...
During the day, she saw Ceylon giving chocolate to a very flustered Schwarz, and she spotted Scavenger and Provence flirting in a corner, the Lupo's tail wrapped around the Zalak's waist. Blue Poison tried not to feel envious or jealous, but she couldn't help it. People thought she was actually poisonous, as if her touch could kill a person instantly. But it was far from the truth, and not many people knew that, but still…
It had been such a long time since someone touched her, apart from a doctor. Glaucus and her were best friends, or she would like to think so, but they never hugged or held hands. She wanted to, but the pinkette was afraid the other woman would be creeped out by her yearning of human touch. Her touch.
The Anura sighed, alone in the cafeteria and wishing this day would just end already.
Glaucus was finally back at the base.
The mission was successful, and only two operators had received some minor injuries. The Doctor dispatched everyone when they arrived, since it was late at night, and the exhausted soldiers went back to their dorms. The Ægir, however, wasn't that tired because she only provided a bit of support on the operation. But she was hungry. The only thing she had eaten was a chocolate bar for breakfast that Weedy gave her. She decided to snatch a snack from the cafeteria, since nobody would be there at this hour.
She was wrong, though. When she arrived, only one of the lights was on, bathing a certain woman in its brightness. Glaucus recognized her immediately. Blue Poison was sitting on one of the tables, head resting on it and in front of a big amount of colorful… bags? She thought the Anura was sleeping, but just then she raised her head and let out a big sigh.
"'Sup, Blue", Glaucus greeted. The woman turned around in surprise to see the AEgir walking towards her. "What's up?"
Her face, normally serious or stern, adopted a big smile that she tried to contain, noticeable only by the trembling corners of her mouth. And Glaucus noticed it, as always.
"Nothing, just… chilling a bit here, that's all", she said, rubbing her eyes. "When did you get back?"
"A few minutes ago. Those Reunion thugs ambushed us, so we had to spend extra time cleaning the mess"
Blue Poison nodded with a smirk, but the other woman knew something was up. She knew that smile very well. Glaucus looked at the pile of sweets on the table. She recognized Blue's handicraft, and something clicked in her mind. Today... was Valentine's Day, isn't it? She vaguely recalled Weedy mumbling something about it when she gave her the chocolate that morning, but she didn't pay any attention to it. And seeing that mountain of chocolates… she could guess what had happened.
Glaucus was always eager to try Blue Poisons sweets. It began as something out of kindness, but that quickly developed into friendship, and then… well, let's just say that Glaucus' feelings were more on the romantic love side. She enjoyed her company above everyone else's, including other Ægirs, and she was very happy when they were deployed together in the battlefield. But seeing her like this… it wasn't right. It felt unfair; just because she uses poison in battle and secretes toxins from her neck doesn't mean her sweets are made from the same things.
Glaucus picked one of the bags, took out the chocolate in the form of a heart and ate it. It was delicious as expected, and it had some kind of blueberry mix with the filling. The Ægir took her time to savour it before swallowing. She looked at Blue, who had a mix of confused and surprised expression on her face.
"Delicious. You really have exceeded yourself with these, huh?", Glaucus said, and she opened another bag.
"Wha- what are you doing? ", Blue asked, watching perplexed as her crush ate another bunch from the bag. "Are you planning to eat all of them?!"
"More or less, yeah"
"B-but you're going to get fat like this!"
"I'll work out more, 's fine", Glaucus said, opening another one.
"Wait, stop!", the Anura held her arm trying to stop her. Her voice was shaking. "You don't need to do this…"
"I can't let them go to waste. You put a lot of effort into these"
Blue Poison's cheeks adopted a similar colour to her hair.
"T-thank you. Still, it's not good for your health… and actually…"
Blue took another bag from one of her hoodie's pockets. It was from a different material than the others, and it had more ribbons and a small sea slug plush charm. It was also bigger, and when she got it out she gave it to Glaucus. The woman looked at the bag and then at her friend, who was looking away from her. The pink in her cheeks was more intense than before.
"For me…?", Glaucus asked, feeling her heart thump quickly against her chest. Blue nodded timidly.
She opened it after a moment of hesitation. Inside there were three big chocolates in the shape of hearts. The chocolate looked like it was dipped in a mixture of grey and dark blue colours… like her hair. It was as if it was enveloped in blue flames. She felt bad for eating something so well crafted, but it would be a waste if it went bad. Glaucus took a bite, and a wave of flavour invaded her mouth. It had the perfect amount of milk, chocolate and salt, and the Ægir made an effort to bite slowly and not swallow it immediately to enjoy the full experience. She was so enticed that she didn't even notice the pinkette's expecting face. Her clear blue eyes were fixed on her, and Glaucus felt something warm on her chest.
"H-how is it…?", Blue asked, timidly.
"I think saying that it's delicious is an understatement", she answered, giving her a soft smile. "It's perfect. Thank you so much for this"
The smile that appeared in Blue's face was beautiful. Glaucus was more than glad that she cheered up, even if it was a bit.
Although… she felt a bit bad because she didn't have something for her in return. She forgot about Valentine's day, since she's never had a reason to celebrate it, but Blue put her feelings and effort into this... And yet, Glaucus didn't even have something prepared.
Well, there was something she could do, but it was too bold, even for her.
"Actually, I might've something for you, too", she said, leaning against the Anura. Her voice trembled a bit at the end.
Blue blinked, surprised.
"R-really? What is it?"
Glaucus took a bite of the chocolate and held it in her mouth. Her arm passed around Blue's shoulders and brought her closer, until their lips brushed. The Ægir pushed the chocolate inside Blue's mouth, and their tongues interlocked briefly. It was very forward for their first kiss, but Glaucus went with her gut and didn't care. And Blue didn't even pull her away; in fact, she wrapped her hands around her neck to bring her closer. The kiss lasted a couple of more seconds until they had to catch their breath. Blue's face was hot and flustered, and her eyes were glassy.
"Did you like it?", Glaucus gasped.
"Y-yeah… I… I…", and suddenly, tears flowed down her cheeks. She realized it, and rubbed them trying to stop them, but it was useless. She couldn't control the flow of emotions she was feeling at that moment.
"I-I'm sorry, I-I'm not… I…"
Glaucus brought her closer in a tight hug. Blue's weight against her body was warm and comfortable, and the Anura's sobs increased against her shoulder. Minutes passed after the pinkette finally calmed down, but Glaucus never let go or stopped caressing her hair. After a while, Blue's voice came out from under her arms.
"Thank you… and sorry…"
The Ægir kissed her hair tenderly.
"It's okay, BP. You were really happy that I finally touched you, right?"
The Anura tensed under her embrace.
"How did you know…?"
"I heard that people were afraid of touching you because of your poison. And… let's just say that you were being pretty obvious when we accidentally touched, or how much you wanted to hang out with me"
Blue's grip tightened.
"I didn't want to be so obvious, or you'd think I'm a creep…"
"I'd never think about you like that. I'm the freak here. My body is more and more enveloped in an exoskeleton by every year it passes, and my muscles are pretty shit. You make delicious treats and want hugs. I think that's pretty darn adorable"
That made Blue jiggle. They fell into a comfortable silence, only broken by the faint sound of the landship's engines. Blue fitted perfectly in her arms, like she was meant to be there. It sounded cheesy, but that's how Glaucus felt.
"Can we stay like this for a while?", Blue asked.
"Sure", Glaucus complied. "But how about we go to my room? I think it'll be more intimate than the cafeteria"
Blue chuckled. "I'd love that"
They ended up sleeping together after cuddling for hours in the bed. The Anura never let go of her lover for the whole night, enjoying her long-desired embrace. As for the chocolates Blue Poison made… Glaucus ate some everyday until all of them were gone. She might have gained a couple of pounds, but for her now-girlfriend it was worth it.
