Work Text:
Fugo had bought the ring on impulse. His grandma leaving him a hearty wealth made buying things like these like it was just a daily occurrence. It had been 6 years already since she passed away and 3 since he bought the ring. He had bought it in hopes it would help him cope with the loss of the only person he had loved in his miserable life.
He lived frugally, far from the lavish life his family lived. Always hiding and running away from the unwanted extra attention, grimacing every time someone would recognize his last name and link him to his horrible family.
He had graduated in law so young and had become one of the top lawyers in his generation right after. He was a celebrity in the law world, but it was far from what he longed in life. His family had wanted him to continue with them, to work for them, follow traditions and to pass the last name like if having a family was that simple. He had run away with his grandma’s wealth and separated himself from those who tormented him with a life he didn’t want to have.
He had ended up as the lawyer of some suspicious man, a man with a lot of secrets but a gentle voice. Bruno Bucciarati had offered him everything he had wanted that moment, a peaceful life, discreet and far from the mouths of his so-called family. He had bonded, slowly and unsure about the type of person Bucciarati was and even more uneasy of what type of people his men were. But that hadn’t been enough for him to reject the offer.
Even then, after Bucciarati had given him everything he had wanted, he looked at his ring and wished for that love his grandma always had talked to him about. About that happiness alongside others, about love being so strong it hurt, and he wondered if he was ever going to experience something like that.
He went out that day to buy some books he had been meaning to buy but had been so busy to do so. He had been browsing the books when a man bumped into him by accident and made him drop the books he was already holding.
He looked up to the man who made him drop everything and he was met with beautiful baby blues and a waterfall of gold. The man apologized and helped him pick up his books and Fugo more than was entranced with such view. He was sure the other was a model craved out of Greek figures. A god between men that bled charisma through every exhale.
Fugo thanked him and was quickly left alone with his thoughts and the memory of the stranger’s small smile. He paid for his books and looked out to the sky, not even the blue sky was as beautiful as that man’s baby blues. He wondered then, if it all had been a dream because of how majestic that man’s appearance had been. He shook his head in denial and in defeat, hoping all his thoughts about said man to disappear.
He made his way to his favorite pastry place and bought the same strawberry shortcake he always did and made his way home. While he walked, he got a phone call. “La margarita” it read. The jewelry store?
“Mr. Fugo, your ring-”
My ring? He looked down to his hand only to find it empty of accessories. His ring was gone. He sighed.
“-Should I call the police? I got him-”
“No, I’ll go there.” He said before ending the call. He was confused. He had no idea when his ring has been stolen. He had no idea his ring had been missing in the first place which made everything more confusing. He walked back into the main street where he knew the jewelry store was. It took him around 5 minutes to arrive and all he had been thinking all the way to the store was who had his ring.
He didn’t expect to see those blues there. There he stood, in front of him, the man who had helped him pick up his books at the library not so long ago. His hair as golden as many pieces inside the jewelry. If Fugo were to be a romantic, he would have said this was his house, he was gold and fitted right between all the jewels.
“Ah! Mr. Fugo, I’m glad you are here! This brat here said you gave him the ring, but I remembered when you ordered such custom piece it was suspicious! He went as far as saying he was your lover! Can you believe that!? I’ll be calling the police so they can take him-”
“I gave him the ring.”
“Sir?” A pair of surprised expressions were sent his way. The blond man appeared to be frowning a little bit too.
“I gave him the ring. I thought you had called because someone else but him had the ring, but now that I see it’s not the case, I’ll be taking my leave.” He doesn’t know why he said that nor what compelled him to lie to that poor man’s face but what was done was done. He turned around to leave when he realized the owner was still sending a cold glare to the blond beauty. He sighed.
“Aren’t you coming?” He called out and walked toward the exit without waiting for an answer. When he got outside, the sky was darker than it had been a few moments ago. He felt amazed at how time could change things so easily. He stopped for a moment to admire it all.
“Why did you do it?” he heard a voice and was surprised to realize it was the blond man’s voice. He didn’t know what he had expected for the man’s voice to sound like, but he decided his voice fitted him so well, it was rich and a little low. He shrugged to himself. He had no idea why he had done it too.
“The ring is yours. You can go.” He said.
“Why did you lie? He said it was custom made, it must mean something! Why did you-”
“I just said the ring is yours, why are you so mad about it?” He asked, getting a little annoyed by suddenly being bombarded with questions.
“Just why!?” The blond asked, his voice sounding a little high pitched thanks to the exasperation that seemed to overflow from his body. Why he asked. Why? Why did he do that? Wasn’t the ring special to him? Hadn’t he sent it to be made so he could remember his grandma and cope with the loneliness she left behind in him? Wasn’t it for that?
It had been for that and yet, Fugo had lived his days in a constant gloom. The ring was just a ring and even if it held his grandma’s favorite jewel, it meant nothing. It wasn’t her nor her love. He looked at the blond man and wondered why it had been so easy to give up such luxurious piece to him.
“It suits you, aint that enough?”
“You don’t even know me!” The blond retorted, a frown marring his handsome face and Fugo felt the great need to tease him.
“Well, aint that a problem, my lover?” He asked with a tiny smirk, expecting that sentence to be enough to spook the man and be left alone. He had so much to think. He wondered if he had given up on that piece so easily what else he could give up without thinking much. Was it because the ring had done nothing for him in life or was it because the man intrigued him and maybe would use that ring better than he had done?
Fugo didn’t know but his thoughts were quickly gone after looking back at the blond man. He didn’t expect the blond man’s face to be lighted up in a soft pink, his blues wide in embarrassment and his body frozen at the spot. Fugo found out in that moment that he wanted to see more of that face. Make the redness of that handsome man’s cheeks spread to his ears and chest. He looked gorgeous in red.
The blond man stared at him in silence, and every time they locked their eyes the other would quickly advert his gaze. After few moments, Fugo sighed. He guessed that was it and he had to go home before it got darker.
“I’ll take my leave then. If you sell that, you won’t have to steal in a good while. It will better if water doesn’t touch it.” He said lastly and started to walk his way home. He wished to see more of the man, but he was a stranger to him and the other was criminal for what he just found out. A handsome criminal at least.
“Wait!” He heard the man call out to him and he turned to see his golds bounce in the air as he ran towards him. This criminal wasn’t as smart as he was handsome. He sighed again.
“What now?” he asked a little annoyed. It was getting darker, his cake was going to lose consistency if he didn’t put it in the freezer soon, plus not to mention that he had to feed his cat.
“I’ll be your lover!” The blond exclaimed and Fugo forgot about all his worries.
“What?!” The blond man was rather bold. Stealing his ring, lying to others, demanding information he didn’t need and getting mad at him for saving his back, and now what? He wanted to be his lover?
“Listen-” Fugo tried but those blues were already on him. His gaze was decisive and strong. Gorgeous man looked determined to be his lover and Fugo felt overwhelmed.
“I’ll do it!” Fugo sighed, he was confused and maybe a little moved. No one had asked him to be his lover with such determination, but then again, many had looked for him because of his wealth.
“Listen, I don’t have more money.” He lied. He had tons, he was rich to the nail, but he didn’t liked people who only attached themselves to others just to suck their money dry. It was always annoying. “And I already gave you the ring, you don’t need me-”
“I’ll give you the ring back! Be my lover.” Blond man said and Fugo couldn’t understand a thing, but the sky kept changing into darker tones and he wasn’t having it.
“Listen, I have to go home, I have a cat, I spend my time reading or working, you don’t want to be my lover and you don’t want to return that expensive ring! Now, leave me alone, I think I’ve given you enough.” He said already mad and turned to leave, not waiting for the other’s response.
A hand grabbed his arm stopping him. He turned around furiously. He was tired, all he wanted was to go home!
“What else do you want for me?!” He yelled and the other didn’t even flinch at his tone.
“I’ll steal something bigger so keep your ring.” The blond said as he placed the ring in Fugo’s hand and closed it. Hiding the contents in between Fugo’s fingers.
“Wait! What?” Fugo asked, his anger dying and turning into confusion for the nth time that day.
“I’ll see you again and I’ll steal this one.” The blond man walked into his space, so close Fugo could almost see the sparkles and the strong fire that lighted up those blues. The unknown blond proceeded to place his hand on top of Fugo’s chest, right where his heart was quickly beating.
The blond got closer and whispered on his ear.
“Thank you for taking care of me, Mr. Fugo. Next time, I’ll be your lover for sure!” He said and took a step back, away from Fugo’s space. Fugo’s body was static but his heart was beating in a frenzy and his face was filled with warmth.
“Till next time, lover!” The blond man said as he walked away from Fugo. His golden hair dancing in the wind and his blues no longer looking at him. Fugo stood there, watching the blond leave and disappear in the night. He sighed and looked down to his hand. He opened his palm and saw his ring and a piece of paper. He opened in the spot, the curiosity being too big for him to ignore. It said:
“Giorno Giovana
xx-xx-xx-xx”
He felt surprised by the man’s boldness, by Giorno’s actions. He shook his head and finally made his way home. On his way he couldn’t help but wonder, when was he going to see Giorno again and if Giorno knew that he had already somehow stole his heart.
