Sleeping Stars

Summary:

Kay and Ema share a night under the stars.

Work Text:

It was never harder to focus on the stars.

Ema glowed under the light of the moon, and it turned fraying, swirling strands of her hair illuminated and shining. They laid in the back of Kay’s pickup truck, where she kept a bag full of snacks, a few blankets, and a first aid kit - the last of the three not employed tonight.

Ema was completely absorbed in the scene before them, often glancing down at her map of the constellations and letting her head snap back to the airspace to search them out. They had promised to find time for this, and Ema had scarcely made it back from the lab in time, and there was a dried spill of a blood sample on her coat, just at the edge of her sleeve. She had foregone her usual half - up half - down hairstyle, and her hair laid out behind her, with a few tendrils falling around her ears and mouth.

Kay, on the other hand, was snuggled up to her girlfriend’s shoulder, her pet mouse, Mickey, snoozing comfortably on her stomach. She had intertwined her legs with Ema’s close enough that she could read the notes she scrawled down about the stars and planets. Her handwriting about this was the way Klavier’s was when he scribbled down a good line for a song - she was too tired to form a connection, no matter how much it intrigued her.

Ema, who softly gazed at the stars now, reached out a hand to affectionately rub Kay’s head - she had cut off a lot of her hair recently, when she made it an undercut, and Simon had helped her even it out, all the while chastising her for not going to a professional. Ema’s fingers remained in her hair, even when they stopped moving.

Idling no longer, she turned to kiss her girlfriend, Mickey slipping to the ground and quickly readjusting himself. She tasted like Sprite - fitting as a small can of the soda rested just beside her, and her lips were chapped and cooled against hers. Ema, abandoning her map and reading light, kissed back, moving atop Kay in the limited space the back of her pickup truck offered. Ema mumbled an unintelligible joke against Kay’s lips, and Kay laughed anyway - everything she said sounded good, and right.

They slept there for that night.
