Work Text:
Ever since Haru hit the last stages of his pregnancy, Daisuke had become increasingly attentive, hovering around him while Haru made dinner or did the laundry or even took a bath. Every moment Haru thought he’d have to himself was bombarded by Daisuke’s instinctual overprotectiveness. And Haru thought if this was any other moment in his life, he would’ve died by now solely from the attention. However, the older man was surprised to find that he absolutely loved Daisuke as the doting husband and father-to-be. He wasn’t sure if it was because of his maternal instincts kicking in or simply because the extra help eased his growing nerves, but either way he couldn’t get enough.
Because of this craving for his alpha’s attention, Haru began doing things that he knew would cause Daisuke to react while also not jeopardizing the health of the baby. Little things like carrying an extra box of casefiles, bending down to grab the rice instead of asking Daisuke for help, agreeing to do small missions outside of the office. Nothing that would harm the progression of his pregnancy, but enough to flip a switch inside Daisuke and bring out his protective alpha side. Most of the time the result would be Daisuke steadying Haru with an arm around his waist, grabbing the extra box, or not leaving Haru’s side while on the mission. In any case, Haru enjoyed the attention. It made his heart melt the way his alpha didn’t have to think twice when it came to his safety, even if said safety wasn’t well-founded.
Today, Haru was making dinner like usual, having stayed home from work due to a sharp headache and sluggish disposition. He’d only agreed to skip work after arguing it over with Daisuke for a good ten minutes. Haru knew the importance of listening to his body while carrying their child, he wasn’t stupid. While he liked Daisuke’s doting, some more extreme instances got on his (admittedly very short) nerve, though. One being ordered to stay away from doing work. After an hour or two of brooding and eating Daisuke’s favorite snacks in retaliation, he got over himself and relaxed for the rest of the day until dinner needed to be made. This was something Daisuke was okay with, had to be okay with due to the younger man's inability to boil water without fear of burning down the apartment.
As Haru stirred the curry, he heard Daisuke walk through the door. Immediate and expected, Haru felt two arms wrap around his swollen belly, gentle but firm, resting on the widest part. The familiar feeling warmed Haru as he laid his head back against Daisuke's shoulder and hummed.
"Hi darling," Daisuke whispered, letting his nose graze the faded scar on Haru's scent gland. "How are you feeling today?" Haru didn't want to respond, trying to focus solely on the way Daisuke's hands minutely rubbed his sensitive belly, slowly making their way to his slightly wider hips and massaging his fingers in the plush skin. Suddenly, all Haru wanted was to create a soft, warm nest, scented by his alpha, where they could relax for the evening in each other's embraces. Dinner had to be eaten, though, and Haru knew Daisuke wouldn't let him skip a meal, even if it meant cuddles.
"Better than this morning," Haru replied, realizing too late that he became wrapped up in Daisuke's arms that he forgot to respond. He felt Daisuke smile against his neck, finally separating himself from Haru.
"Maybe I should help you finis--"
"No. You know that's not a good idea. Besides, I've felt fine all day. Why don't you get changed, hm? Dinner will be ready soon." With a peck on Daisuke’s cheek, he sighed and nodded, making his way into the bedroom. When he was out of sight, Haru smiled to himself, splaying his hand out against his belly where Daisuke's phantom touches still lingered. "Soon," he whispered to the baby.
The rice cooker dinged, indicating that it was ready. Dropping the spoon by accident as he went to open it, Haru bent down, not realizing his motion was far too quick. Suddenly, a sharp pain radiated up his spine and blossomed over his back. Letting out a rather loud grunt, Haru squeezed his eyes shut and tried to breathe through the pain. He was within the window of giving birth, but something told him this was a false alarm.
Nevertheless, he knew his distressed scent would reach Daisuke soon enough. Not thirty seconds later, Daisuke ran into the kitchen, anxiety blatant on his face. Crouching beside Haru, his hands hovered, not knowing what to do.
"What is it? Are you hurt? Is the baby coming?" If Haru wasn't in so much pain, he would've laughed at his alpha, at how heart-crushingly sweet he was being. Instead, he breathed through the pain that was, thankfully, dulling.
"I'm fine. I think...it's a false alarm."
"What do you need, darling?" Haru felt his heart constrict at Daisuke's words. He loved this man.
"A bath, maybe? With calming salts and…you?" Haru worded it as a question, not wanting to assume Daisuke would join him even though he knew full well that his alpha would never refuse his omega. Without another word, Daisuke hooked one arm under Haru's knees and the other around his back and lifted him up. A small protest escaped his mouth before being captured by Daisuke's soft lips against his own.
"Anything for my omega. Let's get you comfortable and I'll rub that belly as long as you'd like." Heat covered Haru's cheeks at the answered request that hadn't even been vocalized.
Once the bath was filled with steaming water and calming salts, Daisuke stepped in and held out his hand for Haru to take.
"Be careful, love," he said, watching intently as Haru fully seated himself, back against chest, in the soothingly warm water. He unintentionally let out a content sigh, laying his head back against Daisuke's shoulder, exposing his neck. Not one to pass up the opportunity, Daisuke trailed kisses along Haru's neck and jaw, reaching his scent gland and releasing his own in order to calm Haru further. The older man couldn't help but let out a soft keen, closing his eyes and focusing on nothing but Daisuke's scent, warmth, and body against his. "Feel better?" Haru nodded. His body did feel back to almost normal. Baby Kambe was intent on giving him trouble, but for tonight it was only a moment in time.
Daisuke snaked his hands around Haru's waist and laid them on the older man's belly again, gently rubbing slow circles with his fingertips. It was one of the most comforting feelings Haru discovered he loved while pregnant, the idea of his alpha present and hyper aware of his expanding belly, widening hips, and fuller breasts. Haru had always loved being touched, cuddled, held, but somehow knowing Daisuke was now focusing not only on his omega, but their child as well, made him emotional.
For a few quiet, peaceful moments of Haru lying against Daisuke, basking in the comfort that Haru craved, he felt like he was on cloud nine. Suddenly, Haru felt a flutter and small kick against his belly and Daisuke’s cupped hands. A small gasp left his lips as he shifted in order to look back at Daisuke. The younger man was smiling like a fool.
“Either the baby approves of my presence or is angry that I’m invading its space,” he chuckled, kissing Haru’s temple.
“I’d like to think the baby is irritable, much like a certain alpha I know when he doesn’t get his way.” Haru’s quip earned him a pinch to his side, which in turn caused water to splash over the side of the tub. The once peaceful moment had devolved into playful aggression and as much as Haru loved those quiet moments, these were just as important.
Taking care to avoid any sudden movements, Haru turned around and sat in Daisuke’s lap, forgetting about the water.
“Thank you.” His golden eyes bore into smokey blue orbs, once again serious in his sincerity.
“Of course, darling.” Daisuke held Haru in his arms, taking care not to disturb the baby. Haru knew they had to get out of the now lukewarm water, but for a few moments longer, he wished to stay just like this, being held like he will soon hold their baby. He’d never tire of this. If only for a short time as he cuddled closer, Haru decided being spoiled by his alpha wasn’t so bad after all.
