No Longer There

Summary:

She doesn't know when did it start. Maybe when she delivered the reports to Newt Lake. Maybe when she made the Mononokean. Maybe much earlier. Maybe from the first time they have met.

She knew that she shouldn't. She wished that she hadn't. But she nurtured it and coshered it, although she understood that it's wrong from the very beginning.

Maybe he did, too.

Work Text:

She doesn't know when did it start. Maybe when she delivered the reports to Newt Lake. Maybe when she made the Mononokean. Maybe much earlier. Maybe from the first time they have met.

She knew that she shouldn't. She wished that she hadn't. But she nurtured it and coshered it, although she understood that it's wrong from the very beginning.

Maybe he did, too.

But she didn't recognise how deep the feeling was until a day, when she came to give him the reports and saw him, lazy and drunken as always. She has said something about his attitude even though she observed it almost every time she visited him, and he smiled an annoying smile and asked her to complete his documents. She remembered she grumbled that she would hit him straightly to his face if he wasn't her superior, and he would become worm-food soon if he continued like this.

His facial expression changed to something strange that she couldn't understand. Though he is an alcoholic, his eyes are ever maintained conscious; but then she found him stared at her with an undecipherable reaction.

"Care about me, Aoi?"

He didn't wait for her to respond. He sat up, leaned forward, wrapped her waist in his right arm and kissed her when his other hand tugged in her hair. She should have pushed him back, shouted at him angrily, ran out and back to the Mononokean; but she didn't do anything - didn't reject him, either. She just became motionless and allowed him to do everything he wanted to.

He was tender. The hollow mask he always wear was off.

He was alone, in decades.

She could taste wine on his lips when he pressed them harder on hers, tightened his hug around her and caressed her jaw softly. She felt like she is a porcelain doll in his hands. She didn't want it to stop.

The kiss didn't last long, either.

He still kept her in his arm, eye closed and whispered in a voice that she had never heard from him before,
"Marry me."

She refused to answer. He must have expected this, because after exhaling deeply, a familiar smile appeared on his face.

The Underworld's normal Legislator came back.

"Hand me the reports, Aoi."

The lonely man who kissed her desperate for a sense of warmth was no longer there.
