Don’t Compare Yourself to Those Extras

Summary:

You’re a student at UA High School surrounded by amazing people. You can’t help but compare yourself to them, and it’s having a big impact on your self-esteem. Luckily, your boyfriend Bakugou is there to pull you back up from this dark hole that you’ve dug.

Notes:

I mostly wrote this for comfort so I hope that it can be of use for you all too! Bakugou may be an arrogant and violent character, but he’s still somehow my comfort character. If he’s yours too,(or even if he isn’t), then I hope you enjoy this short read. :)

Work Text:

You dragged yourself into your dorm room after a long day of school and training. Glad to finally be in your own space, away from everyone else, a sigh escaped from your lips. Today was extremely tiring with many thoughts weighing your head down.

I’m so weak.

Why can’t I keep up with the rest of the class?

Have I gained weight?

Do I even belong here, at U.A.?

You found yourself staring at your reflection through the body length mirror in your room. You weren’t exactly happy with what you saw. In fact, you often wished that your quirk was one that could alter your appearance. That way, you could change every imperfection and little thing that made you dislike your body. You had always felt a little insecure, but recently things began to become worse. You started to compare yourself to the others at this school full of amazing students. Of course, almost everyone in Class 1-A was very supportive and treated you as an equal despite how you sometimes felt that you were below them. So you had to return the smiles and pretend like everything was great.

After keeping it all in for the whole day, you finally broke. You couldn’t control the stream of tears wetting your cheeks.

You let it all out, proving once again, just how weak you were.

Then you were startled, as someone bursted through the door.

“Hey dumbass!” A loud voice boomed.”I’m going-“

Of course, your boyfriend had to barge in right now. Bakugou furrowed his brows, surprised to see you in your current state. You quickly turned away and wiped your face with your sleeve.

“You crying?” He asked, his voice not exactly quiet. But he gently approached you and put his hand on your shoulder. You didn’t want him to see you like this, your face wet and eyes red.

“I’m fine.” You lied, still sniffling. But he, being the smart, observant boyfriend he was, saw through your bad attempt of a lie.

“You’re not fine!” He growled. He led you over to your bed and you reluctantly followed him, knowing you couldn’t win. There, you both took a seat. Your face was still slightly turned away from him.

One of his hands rested on your back and he used the other to turn you so you would look at him. He studied your face.

He probably hated what he saw, you thought to yourself.

“I can tell you’ve been struggling lately.” He said, this time, his voice was softer, more calm. The change in his demeanor was almost shocking. “So what has been bothering you?”

You wiped your face again and looked into his dark red eyes. The light from your window shone on his face. You did feel more secure when you were with him. But could you really burden him with all your problems?

You didn’t respond, instead staying silent and shifting your gaze to the floor.

“You have to tell me. Or how am I supposed to help you, idiot? I wouldn’t be a good boyfriend if I couldn’t do that. And I’m the best, not like those extras!” He grins. His words may seem harsh to someone else, but you knew this was his way of caring for you.

You bit your lip. You knew he was right. Maybe it wasn’t so bad to ask for help. Your boyfriend was always there when you needed him, and even now he was going to help you.

“It’s just… I feel like I’m not good enough. Sometimes I wonder why you even like me. You’re at the top of the class and there are so many other people that are better looking and stronger than me.” You explained, your voice beginning to waver. Tears were threatening to escape your eyes again. You looked at Bakugou to see his reaction.

He looked almost angry. Well, he always looked angry, but this was slightly different. Instead of annoyance, there seemed to be thought in his expression, as if he was calculating something.

“Hey, come here.” He said, pulling you into his chest. He wrapped his strong arms around you, one hand on your head, caressing your hair.

“Listen, you’re so strong, so don’t even say you’re not good enough. And I… I love you. That’s hard for me to say, so you know I mean it.” He barked. “Oh and don’t compare yourself to those extras. I like how you are and that’s all that fucking matters, isn’t it?”

Your eyes were wide at his words. You could feel the passion in his voice and you knew he really did mean it. He was right, after all. You didn’t need to change a thing about yourself.

You nodded, then buried your head further into his chest, finding comfort in his warmth.

“Thank you Katsuki,” you cried. “I love you too.”

No matter how arrogant or agressive your boyfriend may seem, he always knows how to be gentle and comforting when it comes to you. You’ve always known that you two were very different, so you weren’t sure if the relationship would work out at first. But you realized that you both balanced each other out. You make each other stronger.

Next thing you know, you’re laying down, Katsuki on the bed next to you. His leg is intertwined with yours and an arm is wrapped around your body. He kept you secure.

He was that anchor when you felt you were drifting away.

He picked you up when you fell.

And he’d beat the crap out of anyone who’d push you.

And you were perfect. Maybe you didn’t see it, but in his eyes, you were everything that he needed. Even everything that he didn’t know he needed.

So there was no need to feel insecure. Because you found that person that loved you even when you couldn’t yourself.

Your negative thoughts were soothed by the warmth of his body, allowing you to slowly drift into sleep.
