Work Text:
Denki absentmindedly hummed as he continued to read the assigned book for Present Mic’s class. It wasn’t too bad, all things considered. He’d take a book over a math worksheet any day. And Denki couldn’t be too upset about anything while his head was laying in his boyfriend’s lap. His neck might hurt in a few hours, but the hand occasionally stroking through his hair more than made up for it.
Like usual, Hitoshi had finished all of his homework first. But he never minded waiting for Denki to finish, content to sit quietly and scroll through his phone.
A thump from the ceiling made both teens start. Then Denki let out a long groan. “Not again. I can’t do this again.”
“Ignorance was bliss,” Hitoshi agreed solemnly.
Denki had been thrilled when Bakugou and Kirishima finally got together. After listening to Kirishima gush about his crush every day for more than six months straight, who wouldn’t be? The two of them were clearly happy together.
Too happy together, because Denki quickly find out that it was borderline torture to have Kirishima’s room right above his. The dorms weren’t quite as soundproof as he’d hoped.
“I really wanted to finish this book today,” Denki mumbled.
“We could go to the common room,” Hitoshi suggested.
“No, a bunch of the girls are gonna be in there watching their creepy crime show.” Denki shuddered. Even the few scenes he’d caught from just passing by were seared into his brain.
“We could go to my house,” Hitoshi said.
Denki shot up, grinning. “Really? Are you sure?” Hitoshi had never invited him over before. They usually stayed in the dorms because that’s where the rest of their classmates were.
“Sure. My parents won’t be home from work until later, so there’s no one there right now. It’ll be quiet.”
Another thud from above made Denki’s decision for him, and he vaulted off the bed and out the door. “Hitoshi!” he screeched from down the hall. He knew that Hitoshi liked to tease Bakugou, but even he would never eavesdrop on purpose.
His boyfriend came out of his room a few moments later, with both of their jackets and bags slung across his shoulders. He held out the jacket silently, and Denki smiled sheepishly as he put it on. “Thank you,” he sang quietly, taking his bag before lacing their fingers together. “Is your place close?”
Hitoshi nodded. “Very close.”
The walk was nice. It was the middle of fall, brisk but not too chilly. Orange and red leaves fell from the trees and covered the streets. Denki smiled when a few landed in Hitoshi’s purple hair.
But soon enough, the leaves had blown away without Hitoshi noticing and they were standing outside the front door of an apartment.
The first thing Denki noticed after Hitoshi unlocked the door was two very adorable and very loud cats wrapping around their ankles. “Hello,” Hitoshi murmured fondly as he herded them in and closed the door behind them. The cats meowed louder, making his boyfriend laugh. “Yes, I missed you girls too.” He gently pet each of them before straightening up. “That one’s Peaches.” He pointed at the fluffy orange cat. “And the tabby is Cinnamon.”
“Can I pet them, ‘Toshi? What if they don’t like me? And-” Denki froze as Peaches rubbed against his leg, purring.
“I think they like you just fine, babe. They’re good judges of character.” Hitoshi smirked. Denki wasn’t sure if he was joking or not, but he decided to take his boyfriend at his word. He gently held out his hand to the cat, beaming once she started aggressively pushing her head into his hand.
“She likes me,” Denki whispered in awe.
“You know, if you sit on the couch, she’ll probably jump in your lap,” Hitoshi said.
Denki made a beeline for it, leaning against the armrest and looking imploringly at the cats. His boyfriend settled on his other side, gently coaxing the cats to follow.
“Yay,” Denki cheered quietly once the orange cat settled in his lap. The tabby curled up in the open space next to Hitoshi. Denki was pretty sure that he and his boyfriend were both in paradise. He gently stroked across the cat’s fur, leaning his head on his boyfriend’s shoulder. “This couch is really comfortable.”
“Dad insisted on it,” Hitoshi responded. They sat quietly for another few minutes, completely enraptured by the cats. Then Hitoshi broke the silence again. “Didn’t you say you wanted to finish that book?”
“Hm? Oh, yeah,” Denki replied distractedly. “Wait. But that’s still in my bag and I can’t move!” He gestured vigorously towards the cat still curled up in his lap.
“I’ll get it for you,” Hitoshi chuckled, carefully extracting himself from the couch.
When his boyfriend returned with the book, Denki blew him a kiss.
“You’re welcome.” Hitoshi carefully sat back down on the couch, moving Cinnamon’s tail out of the way.
Denki made it through a few chapters before tossing the book aside. He could never finish a book without breaks. He gently stroked behind the cat’s ear, smiling when the purring increased. “You really like the cats,” Hitoshi said conversationally.
“I like cute things, are you surprised?” Denki teased.
“Maybe not,” Hitoshi murmured. “I’m the same way.”
Denki couldn’t resist the urge to kiss him gently. “My parents don’t like animals. But I always wanted a pet,” he said quietly.
“Well, these cats would be thrilled if you came over and pet them all the time.”
“Your parents won’t mind?”
Hitoshi shifted, suddenly avoiding eye contact. “Well-”
Denki was getting ready to press his boyfriend for an explanation when the door suddenly opened and two men walked in.
Denki blinked. Then he pinched himself. Then he blinked again, but Present Mic and Eraserhead were still standing in the entryway. “Oh god, one of my in-laws already hates me,” he blurted out.
Hitoshi and Aizawa rolled their eyes in perfect unison, giving Denki the sinking realization that at least one of Todoroki’s late-night theories was true. In contrast to the grumpier pair, Yamada threw his head back in laughter. “That’s just like you to spring this on him, Hitoshi.”
“He makes a funny face,” Hitoshi defended. Denki elbowed him and his boyfriend squeezed his hand in apology.
“I can’t believe you invited me over to my teachers’ house, Hitoshi,” Denki said, flushing slightly.
Hitoshi just shrugged. “I invited you over to my house. It’s not a big deal, Dad and Papa already know we’re dating.”
“They already know-” Denki repeated hysterically, cutting himself off when he saw a small smile form on Hitoshi’s face. “You really enjoy messing with me, don’t you?”
“Yep.”
Denki couldn’t bring himself to be too upset in the presence of his boyfriend’s pleased expression. Automatically, he leaned in to place a kiss on Hitoshi’s cheek. Mic let out an ear-piercing squeal and Denki grinned as his boyfriend’s face turned the deepest shade of red that he’d ever seen.
“Papa, why?” Hitoshi asked.
“Because I can!” Yamada answered.
“Because it’s fun to see you embarrassed,” Denki answered at the same time. He laughed as he met Mic’s eyes.
At least he had one of his teachers on his side.
