Work Text:
Gojo Satoru is selfish
Everyone knows this. Suguru knows this.
Satoru, himself, knows this.
Always doing things the way he wants them to without ever considering others, because he hates being responsible for other people. He hates the way people push this responsibility to him simply because he’s the strongest. Like he doesn’t get a say to it.
And Satoru hates it with a passion when he feels constricted in the cage by the conservative thinking that the higher ups instill in every living jujutsu sorcerer. And maybe he hates Suguru a little bit because of this too. The notion that they should be protecting the weak is a principle his best friend lives by so passionately.
“You’re the strongest. You should protect the weak.”
(“Yes, but look at where it got you, Suguru.” he wants to say.)
He has always been selfish.
So it isn’t really hard to curse Suguru to himself as he lay there on the dirty pavement of an alley, hurt and dying. Because he’s the only one who can understand him. He’s the only one who he sees as his equal. They were the strongest duo after all.
Because Satoru is selfish and even though he works better alone, he wants the only other person to understand the burden of being the strongest by his side.
Yet as he stands there, staring at Suguru’s body releasing its last breath does he realize that, for once, he doesn’t want to be selfish. He wants to be kind.
Just this one time.
The guilt swirling in his stomach is a foreign feeling as he, the honored one, rarely (almost impossibly) feels guilt but he had been selfish enough to his best friend that it led to him spiraling down a dangerous rabbit hole. One where Satoru can’t reach him anymore, and he let it happen.
Because if there’s anyone who deserves his selflessness it was Suguru and Suguru only.
And so, he kills him.
All the while a single tear runs down on his face that he hadn’t noticed until it drips down on his hand as he utters his parting words to Geto Suguru.
(Hah, at least curse at me a little at the very end)
And so, he brings his body to Shoko and asked her not to get rid of it.
All the while he was holding onto Suguru’s remaining hand.
For just this once, Satoru can be selfless. He can be considerate.
See, Suguru, I’m learning.
Because indeed, love is the most twisted curse of them all.
Love...is it selfish or selfless?
