By the time it happened to him again, Yoongi had realized that it was a cycle. One that he wasn't going to break out of anytime soon.
It's not like he didn't try, he did his best. He called up Jungkook for his basketball practice, made sure to pack an extra lunchbox for Jin, fix anything Namjoon had destroyed , take care of Taehyung when he is sick, video call Jimin and cheer him up when he had a fight with Taehyung. He wasn't a believer of grand gestures but if you noticed closely Yoongi cared and he showed it through his actions. He knew he wasn't best with emotions but he tried .
Things never turned out in his favour and he was used to it by now but what he didn't expect was to find out that all his friends had gone downtown to pub for drinks on Yoongi's birthday but without him. None of them had even wished him. It's like March 9th was just another ordinary day. He was usually unbothered about his birthdays but that's only because Jungkook was there jumping up and down on his sofa, Taehyung and Jimin were arguing in whispers inside the kitchen about how to decorate the cake, Hobi had locked him in his bedroom to decorate the living room and Namjoon was playing with Holly outside because anything else was considered too dangerous a task for him. Jin always turned up a little late but made sure to bring the best food that Yoongi had ever tasted.
Things were however a little different this year. Yoongi had wanted to go to the beach with the boys and stare at the sun till it disappeared beyond the horizon at dusk but the boys had their own plans .
At 7 pm, Yoongi went out to diner near his house in the evening after writing lyrics and producing music in his studio the whole day. They sell the best jajangmeyeon in Seoul here and he and Taehyung had stumbled upon it by sheer luck and now it was their absolute favourite place to grab a late dinner. He felt like eating out alone on his birthday was like wallowing in self pity but if he was, it's better to do it with his version of rom-coms and ice-cream.
He took his usual seat and placed his order. 'Maybe they've just forgotten about it or they think I am busy' he thought while he waited for his food to arrive. It didn't take long and he had just taken a bite out of his jajangmeyeon when he heard seats being dragged and people slipping in beside him. He looked up to be met with three pairs of brown eyes. All of them staring at him.
He choked on his food due to the sudden surprise and Taehyung passed him the glass of soju on the table. Before he could ask them why they were here, he and Jungkook quickly picked up his bowl of half eaten jajangmeyeon and sat on a distant table and began eating the noodles he paid for.
"Yah", Yoongi began, only to be silenced by Hoseok's finger on his lips.
"No questions. Just come with us," he said as he pulled on Yoongi's shirt sleeve.
Yoongi quickly got up and followed him without a word. Both the dongsaengs were waving a bye to him as they finished his noodles. He was emotionally drained from all the overthinking and crying in the bathroom hours ago and didn't have the energy to wave back. He wasn't sure where the boy were taking him but he trusted him with his life.
Soon after a bit of silent walking, they reached a fancy restaurant of sorts. Yoongi felt a little self conscious because he was dressed in just a hoodle and jeans. The whole exterior of the place yelled expensive and he was sure he wasn't dressed for the occasion. He was soon pulled out of his thoughts by an impatient Hoseok who dragged him by his arms. He noticed Hoseok just nodded at the maitre'd and just waltzed in, dragging a confused Yoongi by his forearm.
The whole place was dimly lit and someone was playing a piano somewhere. He could hear Vivaldi's four seasons being played but he still needed to ask Taehyung for confirmation. A chandelier was hanging above head and Yoongi could see his own face reflected in the precisely cut glass .
Hoseok led him towards an empty table and made him sit at the head of the table.
"Hoba, what's going -" before he could finish his sentence, "SURPRISE" a loud voice yelled from behind he jumped in his place. Namjoon , Jin and Jimin popped out from behind the seat and Jimin quickly hugged him as Jin began singing the birthday song for him and ended it with a "happy birthday bro".
By now Yoongi could figure out what was happening. Every year he figures out what 'surprise' the boys are planning for his birthday so this year they planned this in secret outside their dorms so that he wouldn't know. A shy gummy smile graced his face and he suddenly felt overwhelmed by so much attention and love. His emotions were a mess today. It had been quite quite rollercoaster for him. He had spent the whole day questioning if anyone ever loved him but they were all here for him now to celebrate his birthday. His friends did love him.
Jungkook and Taehyung quickly walked in through where he has come in earlier. They must've finished off the jajangmeyeon and were already full but knowing them Yoongi knew they had appetite for another meal. But that's not what stopped him in his tracks. Behind Jungkook and Taehyung, he could see a middle aged lady who was partly hidden in the shadows. As she came under the chandelier, Yoongi gasped not believing what he was seeing. Her lips slowly curved into a smile as she realized she had caught his attention. Her smile was almost the exact replica of his. His mother was right there in front of him and he didn't know what to say to her.
"Eomma?!" Yoongi startled everyone but rushing out of his seat and pushing Jungkook out of the way to engulf her in a tight hug. He hadn't spoken to his parents since he came out to them last spring and needless to say it hadn't ended well.
" I didn't think you'd come" he said a bit softly so that only she could hear.
"You're my son! I wouldn't miss your special day for the world."
"It's just a birthday. Nothing special..." he trailed off awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck but his mom surprised him by planting a kiss on his forehead and pushing him towards the table where his friends waited.
They had dinner together and even ended up applying the cream off the cake on Yoongi's face. He was annoyed with his dongsaengs but he was happy that he was surrounded by the people he loved. He resolved to never let negative thoughts get to him or question if he deserves the love he gets because he realized that this not only made him upset but it would make his loved ones upset too. He hadn't expected this but it made it apparent that there were people that cared for him . His birthday hadn't started off well but at least it ended well and Yoongi went to bed with a smile on his face, happier than he's ever been on any of his birthdays.
