Turn Things Around

Summary:

Izuku ends up in a relationship with his dream guy, but things slowly go downhill. They used to be happy! He can fix this! They just need a way to turn things around.

Notes:

You had requested this ship for the Dead Dove Valentine Countdown, but it ended up being longer than just a drabble, so I posted it separately.

Work Text:

When Izuku went on his first date with Yo, he was thrilled. He had never expected to attract the interest of an older boy from a different school, especially not one as good looking as Yo. They had met at an extracurricular event and Yo had shamelessly asked for his number. He had called Izuku a few days later, inviting him to the local amusement park.

They were having a wonderful time. Yo was exceptionally nice and he held Izuku’s hand as they explored everything in the park, giggling as they shared cotton candy. Izuku was having so much fun, the day flew by in no time. It was beginning to get dark as they stood in line for the Ferris wheel.

“Have you ever seen the city lights from up there?” Yo asked.

Izuku shook his head. No one had ever brought him here before, and he hadn’t had reason to go by himself.

“You’re in for a treat, then,” said Yo conspiratorially as they got onto the ride.

Fingers laced together, they squeezed each other’s hand as the ride began to climb higher and higher. When it reached the top, it went around again, moving at a steady pace that told Izuku they were done letting people onto the ride.

“Izuku, I’m so glad you’re here with me,” whispered Yo as he nibbled his ear. “You’re so amazing, and special.”

Izuku blushed, looking at Yo out of the corner of his eye. There was something a little bit different about him, and Izuku couldn’t quite place it. All he knew was that this was his dream come true. The Ferris wheel stopped and they hovered for a moment, the sea of city lights spread out below them.

“Thank you for inviting me,” Izuku whispered back. “I’m happy you did.”

Yo gently grabbed Izuku’s chin and turned his head so he could press their lips together. Their first ever kiss! They continued to kiss as the ride began to move, tongues sliding together as the Ferris wheel brought them down and then back up again. Yo became more passionate, tugging on Izuku’s hair and nipping at his bottom lip.

“You know, Izuku…. I think I love you.”

The confession took Izuku by surprise. It seemed way too soon to make a declaration like that. Izuku had a vague sense that something wasn’t right, but he couldn’t put his finger on it. If he was uncomfortable, though, he didn’t show it, choosing instead to shut his eyes.

“I love you, too,” he whispered.

Why not? They were only young once. Fuck being careful. Izuku wanted to throw caution to the wind and jump in with both feet, so that was just what he did. He kept kissing Yo until the ride stopped to let them off.

~~

Six months had passed since Izuku and Yo had kissed on the Ferris wheel, and now they were moving in together. Izuku was giddy with excitement. He loved his boyfriend and was grateful that someone as smart and talented as Yo had chosen him, when he could have had anyone in the world.

Or at least that was what Yo kept telling him.

The first few times it happened, Izuku had thought it must be a joke. Yo would say something to tear Izuku down and then say that he was kidding.

“You’re so stupid, you’re lucky I put up with it,” he would say, then laugh at his own words, making Izuku feel confused.

“You’d better hope I never leave you, because you’re such a loser you’ll never find anyone else,” he said other times, dismissing it as a clever attempt at being funny.

Despite feeling uncomfortable, Izuku would brush it off. Yo was his dream guy and treated him well (most of the time). It would be silly to make a fuss over something as trivial as a joke, especially after they’d been together for so many months. So Izuku said nothing. Much like when he’d been on the Ferris wheel, he shut his eyes, not even realizing he was preparing to drop.

~~

On their nine-month anniversary, Yo said he had to work on a project. Izuku wondered what a seismology student could possibly have to do on a Saturday night, but tried not to think too hard about it. They would celebrate another time, and it would be okay. He curled up with a tub of ice cream and his favorite movie, and eventually he fell asleep on the couch.

“Look at you!” Yo exclaimed when he came home. The sun was beginning to rise, meaning it was early morning, and he had just returned.

“No wonder you’re getting fat, if you eat garbage like that when I’m not around,” he said with disgust. “Honestly, Izuku, you can be so gross.”

“Where were you?” Izuku asked, ignoring the insult.

Stepping forward, Yo drew back his arm and punched Izuku squarely in the jaw, knocking him over.

“Do not ever ask me that again,” he said viciously. “I should be asking what you were doing! How do I know you weren’t off fucking someone else while I was gone, huh?”

Izuku’s hands flew to his bruised face, an absolutely broken look in his eyes as he stared up at his boyfriend. Yo had never hit him before! He had handled him roughly, sure, but he had never outright hit him!

“I’m sorry!” Izuku sobbed.

Obviously, he had done something to really upset Yo or he wouldn’t have hit him. Yo was his boyfriend. Yo loved him. Surely he wouldn’t do that unless Izuku truly deserved it. He reminded himself again how lucky he was to have landed his dream guy and be in a committed relationship with him.

They never did find another time to celebrate their nine-month anniversary. Yo never brought it up again; in fact, he seemed more and more distant after that. Izuku didn’t say anything for fear of upsetting him, and decided to tread carefully from then on.

~~

When they’d been together nearly a year, Yo went missing for almost a week. He came home drunk and covered in hickeys.

“Where were you?” Izuku asked.

“I told you never to fuckin’ ask me that,” Yo slurred, grabbing Izuku by the neck and slamming him against the wall. “Worthless piece of shit… this place is a mess. Looks like you sat around on your fat ass all week.”

“No,” Izuku whimpered.

“Oh? So you went somewhere then? Who with?” Yo demanded, tightening his grip.

“I didn’t!” Izuku cried.

“Liar! You’re fucking someone else, aren’t you?”

Izuku had no idea where this was coming from. Every once in a while Yo got it into his head that he was cheating, and there was nothing Izuku could do to convince him otherwise.

“No! I love you!” he gasped. “Only you!”

Yo let go of his neck and he slumped to the floor. He remembered the days when they had first gotten together, how affectionate Yo had used to be, and how happy they had both been. If only Izuku had been a better boyfriend, maybe they would still have that.

Maybe he could fix this! All he needed was a way to prove to Yo how much he loved him. A romantic date, maybe. Their one year anniversary was close.

“Let me take you out!” Izuku offered. “Let me prove how much you mean to me. Please, Yo!”

“Whatever. Okay,” Yo agreed, before going into the bedroom and passing out.

~~

Izuku had it planned perfectly. He had brought Yo to the amusement park where they’d had their first date. Now that Izuku really thought about it, this was when they had been the happiest - that night they’d had their first kiss. So this would have to work, right? Surely it would remind Yo of pleasant times and make him happy.

Yo grumbled as Izuku dragged him through to explore the park, acting like he’d rather be anywhere else. Izuku bought some cotton candy, remembering how they had laughed and eaten it together before. Yo took one look and dropped it into the trash can.

“That shit will make you fat,” he said.

Izuku bit back tears, looking around for something - anything - they could do that was fun. He just needed to bring those happy feelings back again. Finally, he spotted the Ferris wheel.

“Let’s go!” he said, tugging Yo toward the ride.

“Whatever,” said Yo. “I don’t get what you’re so excited about. It’s not like we’ve never seen a Ferris wheel before.”

But he went, and when he and Izuku were seated on the ride, Izuku just knew things were going to turn around for them. He smiled as the ride started and brought them up high, where they could see out over the city. The ride paused in order to let more people on.

“Kiss me, Yo,” Izuku begged.

Yo pushed him away.

“Please,” Izuku said again, sounding desperate.

He undid his safety belt and climbed onto his boyfriend, straddling his lap. He just needed Yo to look at him! Then things would be okay!

It nearly worked. Yo leaned in and pressed their lips together. Then he stopped suddenly, shoving Izuku away.

“I know you’ve kissed someone else with those lips,” he said darkly.

“I haven’t!” Izuku assured him, tears streaming down his face. “I have no idea why you think that, but I haven’t! It’s always only been you!”

“Bullshit!” Yo shouted, shoving him hard.

At the same time, the wheel jolted and began to move again, sending him tumbling over the edge. Izuku grabbed onto the edge, fearing for his life as he hung there, at the highest point of the Ferris wheel. There were shrieks from people below and a crowd began to form, with people staring and pointing up at them. Izuku could see the city lights in the distance, ironically beautiful, just like they had been on that first date.

“Yo… please…” he whispered.

But Yo did nothing - only glared at him coldly as he watched him struggle. Izuku’s hands were sweaty and he began to slip.

“Yo, please, I can do better! I can be better! We can fix this!”

That was what Izuku continued to think up until the very end, even as his fingers slipped and he squeezed his eyes shut, never seeing the pavement rushing up to meet him.

As soon as this is over, we’ll fix this… we’ll be happy… we’ll—

~~

Yo said nothing as the police put him in handcuffs and hauled him away. He appeared closed off and emotionless, while white hot anger bubbled just under the surface. This was all Izuku’s fault. If the little shit had not been careless and gotten himself killed, he wouldn’t be spending the night in a police station, answering endless questions.

Izuku was always doing shit like this- whining, and begging for attention. He was always demanding more and could never just be satisfied with what Yo gave him. This time, it had actually been his undoing, and now Yo was the one left to clean up the mess.

Eventually, when there was nothing they could charge him with, the police let him go. He’d been able to explain his lack of response by saying he’d been in shock and not thinking clearly. Witnesses confirmed he had not actually pushed Izuku (no one had seen the shove beforehand), so it was clearly a case of accidental death.

Only Yo knew the truth- he’d been tired of Izuku’s shit, and had thought it was finally time he got what he deserved.
