Chapter Text
*Starts at the Infinity War scene*
Vision left the bed and opened the curtains from the window that was closer. The room got a little brighter. Wanda appreciated that, since she was sitting on the bed reading a piece of paper and it was dark outside. The sound of the rain on the window just made it cozier for her to relax and she needed that. Not that she was tense or anything, on the contrary, she used to feel very comfortable with Vision around. But she hasn't been feeling good lately. Vision on the other hand, was definitely tense. There was something going on with the mind stone and he couldn't figure exactly what.
The couple was used to being discreet every time they met so they wouldn't get recognized by people. They avoided stepping outside on the streets as much as they could but in the last few days that habit had intensified since Wanda hadn't been in her greatest form. So they would just stay inside their rented room, she mostly sleeping.
"Would you like some more tea?" Vision asked her. He didn't understand how a hot drink made people feel better so fast but he was always willing to do anything for Wanda.
"I still have some, thanks." She answered, holding the ceramic mug. Her eyes didn't move from what she was reading but her voice was sweet, filled with appreciation. She loved the way Vision took care of her. He never failed to show that since the very start when he saved her from dying after killing Ultron. Sometimes Wanda wondered how Pietro would react to that if he was alive. He was a very protective brother.
Vision lamented he couldn't drink the tea as well. He felt unquiet because of the mind stone and not only that but he was not long from having to say goodbye to Wanda once again. Every time they had to separate a feeling of sadness would fill his wires. All of this because they were on different Avengers teams since the civil war. Vision was so tired of their routine mostly far from each other that he decided to turn off his transponder two weeks ago so Stark wouldn't track him down.
The truth was that Vision hated things the way they were and he had been rehearsing repeatedly a conversation inside his head suggesting to Wanda for both of them to stay. He didn't even check the train schedule as he usually would.
He was pacing around the room quietly when the pain came back. A sting on his forehead right where the stone was placed. He kept quiet to not disturb Wanda since he didn't want to worry her even more. A minute later the excruciating pain was gone and he looked at her. Wanda remained focused on the paper, she didn't notice.
Vision wondered if the pain he felt was linked somehow to Wanda not feeling well recently, considering they both had a connection with the mind stone. But that theory was proved wrong when she didn't feel her symptoms at the same time as he did.
Observing Wanda, Vision lost his train of thought. She's so beautiful. He could be really smart but at the end of the day he was only three years old and had some difficulties to recognize what he was feeling sometimes.
Once Wanda told him she felt her heart warm when he was around. "Maybe that's the best way to describe it. I feel my wires warm." Vision answered and she smiled. That was exactly how he was feeling now watching her. Would that be love? The thought of saying goodbye to her once again tomorrow morning just made his wires ache almost even more than the mind stone on his forehead.
A wave of weakness just came through him once again and Vision knew the pain was coming back in a few seconds. He approached the window he wasn't before and opened the curtains as well. Not a minute later his hand was touching the stone above his eyes just as if the movement was going to hold the pain somehow.
Wanda heard Vision gasp and raised her head to look at him.
"Vis?" Wanda called.
She held the tea mug against her chest and the heat of the piece of ceramic helped her warm herself. She was always cold but she would turn down the air conditioning every time Vision was with her even though he told her his body adjusted the temperature by itself just like a human. She feared he would superheat with all those wires or something.
"Is it the stone again?" Wanda asked him as she put aside the train schedule paper just as the mug so she could stand up.
"It's as if it's speaking to me." He answered.
"What does it say?" She walked over at the window where he was standing.
"I don't… I don't know, but something." He turned to her.
She observed his expression, a concerned look on her face. Vision lowered his head once again when the pain came back. The stone was glowing even more than usual. With that Wanda held his face gently, frowning: "Hey".
As soon as the pain went away Vision brought her hand towards his lips kissing her palm softly twice. His eyes didn't leave hers as he placed it on his forehead.
"Tell me what you feel."
Wanda took a deep breath looking down to concentrate as she moved her fingers manipulating her power with its own red light doing its job.
Vision kept his eyes on her face watching her tenderly.
"I just feel you." she exhaled before answering, her eyes meeting his again.
Vision observed every trace of her angelic face under the little light that came from the wet window. Both of his hands held her face and he kissed her slowly.
Wanda kissed him back with an urgent will of pronouncing three little words and eight letters but she didn't. She felt like she lost everyone she loved so she preferred to keep those words to herself for now.
Vision's fingers slid down her arms until they met hers so they could intertwine. He felt one of her hands cold and the other warm from holding the tea mug.
Interrupting the kiss, Wanda leaned her body against his and closed her eyes as her head met his chest, resting there almost as she could hear his heart beating.
"Are you feeling better?" He let go of her hands and took her in his arms.
"Yes." She replied. "Have you told Stark you'll be there tomorrow?" She asked with her accent that he loved so much.
Vision didn't tell her that he turned off his transponder two weeks ago. Normally he would tell her everything but at first he wanted to talk to her about them both staying. Nevertheless, Wanda knew. She was sure that if that wasn't the case, Stark would be there by now. Or at least one of his armors. He'd like to make sure anything happened. Or that I didn't kill him by accident.
"Why haven't you eaten?" He cut her off but she didn't complain. Vision was glancing over her head at the untouched package of food on the nightstand that he brought her earlier.
He never ate anything in his short life. He never felt hungry. But he knew the importance of food for humans and wondered how she could spend the entire day without eating anything.
It was her turn not to answer.
"Wanda?" He called her and she looked up at him. She loved how her name sounded in his voice. "I thought the food might lift your spirits. You ate more than usual in the past few days and now you don't want to eat anything?"
"Maybe that's the reason. I've eaten too much paprikash from that restaurant you've found." She gulped thinking about it. "You know what? Let's not talk about food." She took a step back.
Vision ignored her last phrase.
"Why, do you think it was poisoned? Did you experience vomiting?" He asked worriedly.
"No." She answered sincerely. She was starting to get annoyed by him asking how she was all the time. "But I will if you don't stop talking about it".
Every symptom Wanda felt Vision kept as data to research.
"Alright" he gave up. "What if we go outside for a walk? It's dark and it's raining, there's nobody on the streets".
"I'm tired." Wanda replied so low on her way back to the bed that Vision almost didn't hear her.
"How is that possible? You've spent the whole week sleeping" Vision mentioned. He knew her enough to claim that it wasn't her normal.
Wanda laid down under the covers and closed her eyes.
Fatigue and the lack of hunger. Those are symptoms of... depression. Vision concluded.
"Would you like to watch an episode of one of those tv shows you love?" He asked, hoping that would make her laugh. He could also use a distraction.
"Still trying to lift my spirits?" She chuckled. Her eyes were still closed.
"Always" he smiled.
She didn't look depressed. Also, Vision was there for her when she lost Pietro. He knew how she reacted when she was sad. This wasn't the case.
Maybe she's feeling weak because she didn't eat. But… she's been feeling tired for days and she didn't eat today only.
"Wanda?" He called as he sat beside her. The truth was that he enjoyed pronouncing her name.
She opened her eyes slowly to look up at him.
"Is everything normal with your powers?" He was curious.
Wanda pulled one of her hands from under the covers and a red light emerged from her fingers. She played with it passing from one finger to another. Then she threw it towards the old TV on the other side of the room. It turned on by itself with an episode of Dick Van Dyke.
"So it's just physical then" Vision stated.
"I'm fine, Vis." She argued. "I just need some sleep".
"Alright" Vision gave up, observing Wanda. He reached out his hand until his fingers sank into the strands of her hair, caressing softly.
She gave him a gentle smile and Vision couldn't help but do the same. They stood there looking in each other's eyes until laughs coming from the TV sound caught his attention so he turned his head to the screen. For a long time he wouldn't understand the jokes on those sitcoms Wanda loved so much. But he had watched them so many times that he was getting the hang of it.
"That was funny, wasn't it?" he laughed along with the TV show and looked at Wanda. She didn't seem to hear him, she was already asleep.
Vision leaned to give a kiss on her temple and made sure to turn up the air conditioner for her. He always did that when she was sleeping so she wouldn't argue.
An hour and two episodes of sitcoms later, Vision was in his rest mode when the pain came back even stronger. It felt like the stone was burning his entire head as a warning. Next, he didn't know what happened but if he was human he would say he fainted.
The pain seemed to go away as something like a dream started:
"Vis?" Wanda called "Are you ok? Are you in pain?"
"Not anymore. Where are we?" He asked, taking a look around the porch they both were sitting at.
"Pietro and I used to dream about having a house in the suburbs. In a calm neighborhood. To grow old in. " She explained. "I woke up with you hurting and I just had to give you a distraction till the pain goes away".
"It worked" He looked at her in awe. "This place is beautiful. So as you"
Wanda touched his face, tracing her fingers through every line.
"Wanda?"
She looked at his eyes.
"I really like you, Wanda"
She smiled. That phrase reminded her of when Vision tried to cook paprikash in the Avengers' compound. "Wanda? No one dislikes you, Wanda". She kissed him as she brought him back to reality.
...
"Is it gone?" She asked.
"Yes. Thank you" His eyes sparkled with love. "I'm sorry I disturbed your sleep"
"That was the least I could do after all" She said and he knew exactly what she was talking about. Every night he stood with her after Pietro died to make sure she wouldn't have any nightmares.
"Wanda?" Vision called, his hands shaking her shoulders. "Wanda?"
"Vision?" She answered with a husky voice, opening her eyes.
"You were having a nightmare again." He said worried.
"Yes" She sat on her bed from the Avengers compound, rubbing her eyes. They adjusted to the little light coming from the window before they headed to the door's direction. It was closed. Vision passed through the wall again.
She had been having nightmares almost every night since Pietro died and Vision would always come to make sure she was ok. But for the first time, Vision had to interfere in her sleep twice that same night.
"Is there anyone home?" She asked him.
"Cap and Natasha are sleeping" Vision answered. "Do you need something?"
"No, thank you." She replied and Vision nodded, visibly disappointed as he made his way to the door.
Wanda frowned with his answer about the others sleeping. She thought it was strange that all those nights she didn't accidentally wake anyone up besides Vision. On the one hand she felt relieved because she had a place to stay and didn't want to disturb anyone. On the other hand she thought at least curious how that was possible if she was screaming in her sleep.
"Vis?"
"Wanda?" His red lips formed a hopeful smile.
"Would you stay with me? Until I fall back asleep?" She asked as she laid back down. She was feeling lonely and she knew that didn't help her at all.
Even in the dark, Wanda could say Vision's eyes sparkled for a second.
"Of course" He sat gladly on the chair she had in her room.
"Vis?"
"Wanda?"
"I'm sorry I disturbed your rest."
"You didn't. I was counting electric sheeps."
Wanda laughed. Things always felt lighter when he was around.
"What number were you at?"
Vision's smile faded away and he stood quiet for a few seconds.
"I wasn't counting any kind of sheeps" he confessed.
"Vis. Were you in my room?"
"No" he answered honestly and felt the need to explain himself. "You know, I… I can adjust the sensitivity of my audio receptors. Sometimes I do that so I can hear your heart beating. This way, I know when you're sleeping. And recently I've learned to tell when you're having a nightmare considering how suddenly your heartbeat accelerates. Also… Counting your heartbeats is like counting electric sheeps to me. It helps me to put myself in rest mode peacefully"
Vision felt the strange need to hide for the first time. His database told him that was what the humans called embarrassment.
Wanda stood still looking at him thtough the darkness of the room.
"Maybe I should leave" He said, thinking he might have left her uncomfortable.
"Vis?"
"Wanda?"
"Would you mind… laying here? So I can put myself in rest mode peacefully with no bad dreams?"
She had no more nightmares that night nor every single night he stood with her.
...
"Wanda, alternatively I can go get another food" Vision offered. "Or you could come with me so you can chose"
"It's not the food." Wanda said, staring at the now opened package in front of her on the small table of the room. She ate a few bites but pushed it away. "It's my stomach. I feel…" Wanda gulped and closed her eyes for a second.
"You feel what?" Vision insisted.
"I'm just tired".
Vision hated seeing her like that and feeling like there was nothing he could do about it.
"Come here" He opened his arms and she went back to bed cuddling up to him. "You're not feverish, so it's probably not a bacteria nor a virus"
"Hey" Wanda interrupted his thoughts. "Let's just take a nap and then I'll go out with you. I'll choose something to eat. How about that?"
"Alright" Vision nodded. "I like that". He smiled and kissed the top of her head.
There wasn't much he could do while she slept. So he just did what he liked the most: admire her. He stroked her face and her hair as he noticed her breathing slow down.
It's been a while since he wouldn't do what she just remembered him... Listening to her heartbeats. He used to do that a lot when they lived together at the Avengers compound. That sound made him feel like she was around. She was there, she was close. Maybe that would help him feel more relaxed now.
Vision adjusted the sensitivity of his audio receptors as his hand caressed hers on his abdomen. If I didn't know you I could swear you're synthetic. You're perfect, Wanda.
Lost in his thoughts, Vision traced her fingers and the borders of her nails. For a synthezoid, in theory he wasn't supposed to feel the need of touch. The need of human touch. How did it hurt so much to be away from her then? The pain was almost physical.
Suddenly he remembered why he didn't do that anymore. Listening to her heart. Those rented rooms had too many people. He could focus on one single sound if he could but when the other ones were too loud that bothered him.
He tried to focus on her beating and to his surprise, this time that wasn't so hard. Her heart was faster than anyone else's there.
Vision moved his eyes from her hand to her chest that was under the sheets. Her heart was beating 30% faster than normal, he calculated. He frowned and leaned his head a bit in order to listen more accurately.
Two other sounds caught his attention. Those two were almost like unison, even faster than Wanda's. But somehow a little distorted.
Vision looked around the room just as if there were people there with them. He focused as he could to find out where those different sounds came from and he even considered for a second that they were from downstairs. But that didn't seem to be true since they were much closer to the point he could easily distinguish them from other people's rooms because of the walls.
Vision's eyes went back to Wanda as he tried to track the new sounds somehow. He tried to isolate those two heartbeats as much as he could but it was hard since hers was overlapping the other two.
He lifted her arm from him carefully and held it up as he uncovered her.
"Vis, what are you doing?" She asked sleepy then pulled her arm from his grip so she could rub her eyes.
"Shhh wait" He answered and stood quiet as he sat.
Wanda rested her hand in front of herself on the bed and narrowed her eyes trying to see his expression in the darkness.
His frown softened slowly as realization would come across his face.
"Wanda? Are you…?! I think… I think…"
"Vision, is there something wrong?" She asked, a little dose of adrenaline now on her blood as she waited worriedly for his answer. "Did something happen?"
"I can hear two hearts beating inside you besides your own" Vision said carefully, looking straight at her eyes.
Wanda sat. Maybe she was still sleepy because she was having some trouble to process what Vision was trying to tell her. He seemed to notice that.
"Wanda, I think you're pregnant" With that, he gave her time to understand the news.
She frowned, trying to put together all of her symptoms. When it all made sense, she felt like her heart was pounding.
"Vision… Is this really happening?"
"Yes, my love. It's really happening" Vision held her hand and kissed her lips softly. "We're having twins"
Wanda's eyes watered as she remembered Pietro. She was a twin and now she was having twins.
