Chapter Text
“Okay, What was that?!”
The winds of the flight range were blowing forcefully throughout its crater. Revali stared down his son like a bomb arrow were to come out of the updrafts and end him right there. Kedon rolled his eyes and scoffed. Not this again.
“What made you even think that interrupting the Warbler’s nest festival with a show of bomb arrows was a good idea? Not only did you ruin the festival, The village elder was wounded because of you!” Revali was enraged, but not enraged in a way that made him want to slaughter a hinox or in this case, his own son; but he was holding himself back. Just as he always was, he was lost in how to deal with his son’s behavior. His brows furrowed as the updrafts continued to echo throughout the small hut.
“I WAS trying to make the boring festival a bit more alive, but it seems even you don’t have taste in what being alive means.” Kedon crossed his wings and awaited a rebuttal. He didn’t even look Revali in the eye, who’s dull emerald began to fade into a swamp’s shade.
“What must I do for you to stop all this and straighten up? You don’t help around the village and you don’t train with the others!”
“Why not try and stop interfering with my life?”
Revali frowned at his answer.
“Kedon, your mother wouldn’t want this, you know how much she loved that festiva-”
“Oh so now we talk about mom! Since when did you care about what she loved? It’s like you didn’t care at all!”
“Kedon, she’s been gone for 8 years! 8 years of you bringing trouble around the village. Is this how it’s going to be? What is the real problem?”
“That’s the thing. You’re never around to truly know the answer.”
“With all the missions I’m doing, I don’t have time for your guessing games so please just tell me.”
“You want the answer?” A bitter laugh escaped Kedon’s beak.
“I don’t want to be with you. I want to be with mom but I’m just so unlucky because you are the one I have to stick with.”
Revali was just so lost in that moment. He always knew his son didn’t like staying with him but to hear it out loud was even more painful than just knowing it.
“I’m trying my very best because I loved your mom...and I love you most of all!”
“Then who is Mipha?!”
Revali froze. The wind was blowing forcefully between the two ritos, Revali opened his beak but no words came out. Kedon raised an eyebrow, feeling even more angry than before.
“So it is true,” He began to walk towards the flight range’s landing, closing in his wings into tight fists at his side. He looked out towards the updrafts rather than Revali’s eyes.
“You didn’t love mom at all. You loved someone else”
“Where did you...learn that name?” Revali was trying not to freak out, he gently made his way to the table to lean his back on. Just how...did he learn of that name.
“You didn’t answer my question.” Kedon snapped, turning around. The fire’s flames highlighting his sharp beak and maroon feathers. His white and yellow accent feathers blazing brightly along with his red markings. His expression disgusted by his father’s unresponsiveness.
The ground felt like shaking under Revali’s talons. This was not what he wanted. No...he wanted to bury that part of himself at the very bottom of the flight’s range’s crater.
If he could, he would have done that years ago.
“I’m...going to prepare for my mission tomorrow.”
Before Kedon could react, Revali had run and pushed himself into the air, leaving Kedon at the entrance of the flight range.
Kedon breathed heavily, taking a fistful of bomb arrows and diving straight into the crater. Only a second has passed before huge amounts of explosions and smoke were engulfing the crater.
“COWARD!” He screamed as he let go of another arrow into a poor target’s center.
A night with a promise of fun and laughter turned into one that was gloomy. Fledglings curled up next to their parents afraid as explosion after explosion echoed from outside their homes.
The morning was cold in Rito village.
It somehow felt colder when Kedon walked in on Revali putting on his armor and beige scarf, tightening it at his neck. He knew very well that his son was standing at the entrance of their nest and he prayed to Hylia he would not press on the matter they had yesterday.
But just as always, Hylia never showed him mercy.
“So mom was not the only woman you loved?” Kedon asked, not angry like yesterday but he was borderline pissed.
Revali turned around, grabbing his Great Eagle bow.
“I don’t have time for this, I need to go.”
He walked past Kedon, making his way towards the landing.
"You make it seem now that you are guilty of something." Kedon let out with a gritted beak.
Revali didn't answer.
"Did...did you cheat-"
"I would never!"
Revali turned around to face Kedon.
"Is that how low you think of me?" Revali asked, sorrow crossing his face.
Kedon just stared him down. From his place, he was one step higher than him. His expression was the only answer Revali needed.
"You have no idea how much I love you and how much I loved your mother."
"Yeah, maybe you are right," Kedon stepped down to the same step as Revali.
"I have no idea because I never felt it, and mom certainly didn't feel it either."
They were at the landing already, and Revali didn't know how to respond to that.
He simply positioned himself, ready to launch.
"I wish you were the one who died instead of mom, then maybe things would be different."
Revali raised himself from his launch position and looked back at Kedon, who had his wings crossed and face painted with a disgusted look.
"I really hope...you don't mean that Kedon."
Revali launched into the sky, letting the updraft take away the tears in his eyes.
