Work Text:

It’s Like June in January

Ginny stood in her closet and looked over her choices. There was that little black dress that Harry liked to see her in and, honestly, she liked the way he looked at her in it. However, it was far too cold to be wearing that. If it was too cold for that, it'd be worse in the lingerie she'd prefer.

There was the flowing black robes that Harry had recently bought her and they were considered the height of Wizarding fashion this year. Yes, that would do. She wanted to surprise him and maybe talk him into going out for a late dinner when he returned from work.

Changing, she also put up her hair -- nothing complicated, but she thought it made her look a little more grown up. At nineteen she sometimes felt too young, but being recently married helped her feel a little older too.

All ready except for Harry not quite yet home from Auror training, she looked out the window. Patches of blue sky were fading and a rising half moon was playing hide-n-seek in the clouds. The heavy snow fall from the recent snow storm that wasn't quite through with them made it beautiful though. If Harry was here and holding her, well ... she sighed with a half-smile and turned for the living room to get comfortable and wait on him.

Things had been a little rocky after the Battle at Hogwarts, but they'd worked through most of their questions and problems during the summer after that. She'd managed to talk Harry into returning for his seventh year so they'd share classes and get to spend more time together. During that time, they'd worked through the rest of their questions about each other and how they could go forward. He'd been so sweet about returning to school for her, instead of going on like Ron had. She reminisced about their last year at school for a bit, especially the secret places they'd found, perfect for stolen kisses and time to be alone.

Not wanting to get dirty, Ginny picked up her wand and levitated another log onto the fire in front of her. A glance at the clock showed it was later than she'd realized, obviously having lost herself in her memories.

As she was considering how she might contact her new husband without distracting him should he be in a precarious position, she heard a thump on the outside wall. It was just a tree dumping snow on the house she was sure, until she considered there were no trees on that side of the house.

She really doubted anyone was attacking their house since it was so cold outside and with all of the snow on the ground and in the air, but her curiosity got the better of her. Donning her heavy cloak, wand in hand, she opened the door and looked out cautiously. It was hard to see now as the blowing wind had picked up significantly into almost a blizzard and it was almost dark. Still, there was nothing to be found from the little she could see.

With a sigh, she steeled herself to hurry around to the side of the house for a quick peek to see what had made the noise. Closing the door behind her, she used her wand to clear a narrow path to the corner. Keeping a hand on the side of the house to steady herself and so she wouldn’t wander away, she walked to the corner and cautiously looked around it. Ginny just blinked what looked like a man-shaped hole in the snow a few feet in front of her with a bit of cloth coming out -- cloth that was the deep Auror red.

"Harry!" she shouted and lunged forward as quickly as she could move the snow and make a path. Sure enough, it was a man the size of Harry in Auror robes. Levitating him, she turned to go inside, but had a hard time seeing as the wind was starting to blow harder. Reaching all around with an outstretched hand, she found the side of the house again and started back towards the door with a limp person in front of her.

Carefully, she opened the door when she reached it at last and maneuvered her husband in, slamming the door behind her. Hurrying over to the fire, she placed him gently on the floor. It wasn't until then that she realized how cold she'd become in her rescue effort.

Pulling his outer cloak off to warm him faster, she also checked him over. Other than a large bump on his head she couldn't find anything wrong with him. Satisfied it'd turn out all right, she pulled her heavy cloak off and saw her robes again and sighed. They wouldn't be going back out again tonight.

Harry coughed and stirred, causing her to drop quickly to her knees.

"Harry? Harry, are you all right?" she called in concern as she reached out to straighten his glasses.

He blinked awake and looked at her. "Err, hi." He looked around for a moment. "What am I doing down here and why are you so dressed up?"

She smiled, she couldn't help it. "I had to pull you out of the snow and rescue you. How did you run into the house? Why didn't you land on the porch?"

Harry closed his eyes and wouldn't look at her. "I, uh, I wanted to surprise you and I knew if I landed on the porch I'd make a a lot of noise. I guess I didn't land where I wanted because I was so tired."

Ginny reached up and caressed his face. "Oh Harry, I always like your surprises, but you didn't need to tonight. I was going to surprise you and take you out. I guess we'll have to save that for another night."

"No, no, I want to go out with you," he insisted and struggled to sit up and she had to help him.

"You're too tired," she told him with a shake of her head. She knew he was going to insist.

"Give me a few minutes please," he insisted. "I'll be fine soon. How about you sit here with me? Please?"

She shouldn't she knew, but she gave in far faster than she'd first wanted and moved over to sit next to him. He pulled her into his arms and held her tight, just like she liked so much.

"I want to take you out because it's our six month anniversary. It's why you dressed up too, wasn't it?" he asked softly.

She smiled. "I'm surprised you remembered, but yes."

"Good, good. I'll go change in a few minutes, but I want to take you out because you're so special. You're like a miracle to me, Ginny, after all the bad things," he told her. "Sure, it's cold and snowy outside, but with you it's like it's always spring. The snow is like, well, like white blossoms that have fallen from the sky."

"Harry, stop it," she admonished him tenderly.

"Yes, really, you really are like magic," he hurried on. "It does doesn't matter how cold it is outside, how bare the trees are, how deep the snow is, or anything else. It like... Yeah, it's like it's June even if it's really January and it's because of you."

"Harry..."

He lifted her head and kissed her gently but with all of his feeling. "You make it so because I'm so in love with you."

Ginny felt her eyes watering as she considered how good he was to her. "I love you too, Harry." She kissed him soundly to let him know too. Maybe they didn’t need to go out tonight, after all, they were still newlyweds.
