Kairi sat at her table during lunch staring at a table at the other side of the cafeteria. She was looking at Roxas.
It was no secret among her friends that Kairi had a big crush on Roxas, but recently he seemed to be all she would think about.
"Thinking about him again, Kairi?" Olette asked, which made Kairi snap out of her focus on Roxas.
Kairi sighed "Finals are coming up and after that school will be letting out for summer vacation...What should I do?" She asked. "If I don't ask him out this week I might not get the chance when school starts back up."
Xion, who sat next to her on the table, turned to face her "Then why not just make a move before then? I'm sure he likes you too."
"But how do I go about asking him? And how do you know that?"
Xion shrugged "It just feels like every time you and Roxas talk, there's already something going on between you. Like, you two are such an obvious couple."
"I wish I could be that certain" Kairi said before sighing "I don't know, it feels like all my friends have gotten a boyfriend except me. I wish I knew what everyone else is doing right." Suddenly she got an idea "Wait Xion, how did you and Hayner get together?"
While it was known that Xion and Hayner had been an official couple for a while now, Kairi didn't know exactly how they got together other than that they suddenly started dating one day. She thought maybe hearing how Xion got together with her boyfriend could help her think of a way to get together with her own crush.
"Well since Hayner's on the football team I started catching him after practice and I'd make conversation with him" Xion said "Then one day after his practice I walked up to him and asked if he wanted to hang out and get some ice cream, and he said yes! Then I brought him to my favorite ice cream place, we hung out some more, we shared our first kiss, and since then we've been boyfriend and girlfriend." She explained "But why'd you want to know?"
"I wanted to see if there was anything I could go off of for how I should go about asking Roxas out" Kairi explained "He's not on a sports team or anything but I do catch him after class and we talk for a bit. He's into struggle but I don't really know how to get closer to him through that."
"But that's it" Xion said "If you already talk to him on a regular basis then it would be perfectly normal to ask him to hang out next time you see him after class, right? Also for struggle, you could make that a conversation topic on your date."
"Maybe" Kairi said "But what if he's busy with schoolwork and preparing for all the tests coming up? I don't know if he'll even have the time to do anything with me."
"Oh, that's easy!" Olette said "Just ask him if he wants to study with you after school, and maybe you can help each other with your homework too."
It occured to Kairi that if Roxas was busy with schoolwork, it's not like she'd be distracting him from it by hanging out and studying together.
Kairi's expression brightened "Yeah, I think that might work! I'm going to ask him next time I get the chance." Kairi said "This is perfect, I've been stressed about the tests and about getting with Roxas before the end of the school year, and now I have a chance to take care of both of those things in one go. Oh, thank you, girls!"
Xion smiled "Glad we could be of help" She said "Now are you going to eat your food? You haven't touched it this whole time."
Kairi looked down at her plate and giggled sheepishly, realizing she forgot all about her lunch while she was thinking about her crush. She started a few bites of her cafeteria food that she'd been neglecting. "You know...I think I might be able to ask him after lunch." She said.
"Yeah, you got this, Kairi!" Olette said "Go get him!"
Kairi felt confident now that she had a clear picture in her head of how she would ask out Roxas. She finished up lunch with Olette and Xion and went into the halls looking to see if she could find him when she realized something. Even though she had come up with a way to ask him out, and she had thought of the words she would say to him in her mind, she hadn't prepared for actually saying the words out loud right in front of his face.
Shoot. These things always sounded easier when she thought of them. Well, even if she wasn't quite ready yet she always had until tomorrow to think more about it. She just needed a little more time, right?
Before she could start hesitating again she noticed someone walking towards her. He was a bit taller than her, wore jeans and a dark sleeveless shirt, had blue eyes and big, spiky, handsome blonde hair. She felt caught off guard and felt her heartbeat when he walked right up to her with a smile on his face.
"Hey Kairi!" Roxas said while holding his backpack over his shoulder "Good to see you. Stuff has been pretty busy lately huh?"
Kairi tried to compose herself in front of her crush "Heh yeah I was wondering when I would get to see you again. Weird to think Summer vacation is almost here..."
"I've been looking forward to it for a while" Roxas said "With no school I'll be able to hang out at the skate park, hit the beach, oh, and join as many struggle tournaments as I can! I haven't had the time to practice lately, so I'm going to need to make up for it by spending a lot of time working on my skills this summer. Struggle season's fun, but it's a really busy time for me, you know?"
Kairi fixated at his last sentence. If he was going to be really busy with struggle, that meant even during Summer vacation she wouldn't be able to find the time to ask him out, and by the time school started back up he might already be seeing someone. If she didn't ask him out within the week it would be too late, which made her more worried.
"That does sound fun" Kairi said "I've had a lot of plans for Summer vacation too" She didn't mention it of course but in reality most of those plans were related to being Roxas's girlfriend. She had daydreamed a lot about trips to the beach with him and visits to his house and all sorts of other romantic situations that she'd never get the chance to experience unless she got together with him by the end of the week.
"Won't be long now" Roxas said and paused for a moment as if thinking about something "So, you've been really busy with finals coming up, right? Like, you probably don't have time for much after school besides studying I imagine?"
Kairi nodded "Yeah my mom has been really pressuring me to study hard and do well on the test, with her around I don't think I could do really anything after school except study even if I wanted to" She said, realizing now that this was her chance. She took a breath and passed a hand through her hair "So um I was wondering since I can't do much else and I need to focus on studying anyways, if you wanted to hang out and study with me after school?"
Roxas stared at her wordlessly for a few seconds, and Kairi began to get nervous thinking she might have been too direct and weirded him out. The blonde suddenly smiled "Actually, I was just about to suggest that...Guess we both had the same idea" Roxas said before he let out a chuckle, "It's a deal, then. How does today after school sound?"
Kairi's eyes widened, and now it was her turn to stare in silence. Had Roxas also been planning to ask her out? Apparently he was, because he just did. The redheaded girl's look of surprise faded and she got a big wide smile on her face "That sounds wonderful" Kairi replied with a blush before taking a moment to think "Wait, where are we going to study? We can't go to my house because my mom won't let anyone over to distract me, and she wouldn't believe me if I said I had someone over for studying."
Roxas smiled "We could just go study at my house, then. My parents won't be home for another couple days so we'll have the whole place to ourselves"
This had to be a dream or something, Kairi thought. Her heart was beating so fast at everything that was happening. Not only had she managed to ask Roxas out but he had planning to do the same for her as well. Now she was going to his house where the two of them would be alone together for the whole evening on what she was sure they both knew full well was a date.
"Okay...yeah, that's perfect" Kairi said as her cheeks heated up "I have to get to my classes now but I'll see you later okay Roxas?"
"Right, meet me outside the school later and I'll pick you up" He said. The idea of Roxas picking her up sounded so dreamy to Kairi.
The soon-to-be couple walked off in separate directions and Kairi was so busy thinking about Roxas that she didn't notice herself walking right into Olette.
"That went well, didn't it?" Olette said with a smirk on her face
"Olette!?" Kairi said in surprise as she stumbled back "Wait, you were watching that whole thing?!"
Olette nodded "Yep! Honestly I'm kind of surprised you two didn't just kiss right there in the hall with how obvious you were being"
"Oh my god" Kairi said, her cheeks completely pink and too surprised to say anything else
"Well I did say you could do it" Olette said with a smirk before walking off.
Kairi was totally going to get back at Olette for snooping in on her and Roxas, but first, she had a date to go on.
