Pulling the Trigger

Summary:

It was inevitable they'd meet on the battlefield.

Work Text:

The screams of spells around them fell to ribbons of colored silence.

He was standing by the trees, shadows cutting up his face. Blood matted an eyebrow, a bruise glowed on his chin. His eyes were disks of cold alabaster. They surveyed her coolly as she stumbled to a halt against a tree trunk and froze. Their eyes met across the destroyed pumpkin patch.

There was no one around. Just him and her, on the battlefield. Her throat closed up.

Draco tilted his head to the side, and gave her a crooked smile. It slit through her like a hot scalpel. "Knew it was too good to last," he said, then barked a laugh. "Can't stay away from me, can you Granger?"

Her cracked lips tasted of blood. "Leave me," she tried.

"I can't." His lips whitened. "I never could."

For a moment, she thought she would fall to her knees. Her legs trembled violently, but a hand on the tree trunk steadied her. She pressed her wand to her chest.

"Don't make me do this." God, she was starting to sob. "I can't."

Draco shook his head. "Yes you can." At her wild expression, he sighed. His face softened. "Raise your wand."

His hair. His eyes. The light along his jawbone. She wanted to kiss it. Instead, her wand rose shakily.

She closed her eyes.

"Now!" he shouted.

The words ripped from her jugular. She screamed as they flew like a glowing, green bullet.

She missed.

He hit.
