Work Text:

As it turns out, makeup wasn’t as fun as everyone always made it out to be.

“Doctor, stop moving!” Yaz scolded her playfully. “Just sit still, I’m almost done.”

The Doctor let out a small grunt while she did her very best to be still as Yaz finished putting on whatever mess of cosmetics was currently on her face. It was itchy, it stung in her eyes, it felt like her skin couldn’t breathe, and quite frankly it was just a downright unpleasant experience to sit through it being put on. And no, it wasn’t solely because she was unable to sit still - though that certainly didn’t help.

The two of them had been through enough hardship together recently, and the Doctor figured it was time to go on an adventure where they could just cut loose and not worry about any of their problems. Ever since they had gotten together to ease the tension between them after space prison, it’s all she wanted to do; and with these new feelings growing between them, they were well overdue for a proper night out.

She had found out about this planet a long time ago but never had the right opportunity to go until now, and Yaz was more than happy to run away with her to this faraway galaxy with its weird planet. Nothing was ever too bizarre for them.

“All right, then,” Yaz spoke much more calmly this time. She was probably happy to not have to deal with the Doctor’s disobedience any more. “All finished.”

She held up a small mirror in front of the Doctor for her to look at her work. Her own reflection startled her when she first looked, an unfamiliar face staring back at her. But what caught her eye was how beautiful the artwork was on her face.

“Oh, my gosh, Yaz!” She gasped. “It’s amazing!”

There was a blend of vibrant colors that spread across her eyelids, skillfully accentuated by the heavy amounts of glitter that were on top of all of it. The glitter also seemed to have found its way to the apples of her cheeks, which she thought was fun as well. She had no idea that Yaz was so talented at this sort of stuff. It was strange what hobbies humans picked up in their free time.

She looked up at Yaz to see her smiling at her proudly. That bright smile of hers always gave her butterflies in her stomach. It was hard to ignore. And knowing Yaz was safe and happy was a good sign, anyway.

“Alright now, move.” Yaz waved her hands at her, an indication to get up from her seat. “Go pick something for us to wear while I do mine.”

The TARDIS never seemed to disappoint when it came to suggesting outfits. It must have known where they were going because the selection was blinding; everything in the wardrobe was full of sequins and glitter.

The Doctor filtered through the endless amount of clothing on the racks until the perfect outfit caught her eye for both her and Yaz. Holding them up in front of her side by side, she couldn’t help the enormous smile that spread across her lips. Yaz was going to love it.

She quickly put her own outfit on, checking out her new colorful and sparkly appearance in the mirror that the TARDIS so kindly provided. It was basically the same silhouette of her regular rig- out and boots, just with the added fun of sequins and glitter. The coat that came with it was a bit shorter in length, but still gave her the eccentricity that she loved when picking out clothes.

She did one last turn in the mirror; her smile beaming at her number for the night. Now she just had to deliver Yaz her matching one.

Making her way back to where Yaz was, the glittery fringe on her fresh coat and pants rustled as she walked. The dim lighting in the TARDIS corridors caught in the reflective surfaces every so often. She loved being shiny. Perhaps she should make this her new everyday ensemble.

Yaz was focused in the mirror with a brush to her eyelid as she finished her makeup look to match the Doctor’s. Yaz turned to look at her when she entered the room. Upon seeing the outfit, she burst into laughter immediately.

“Oh, my God!” She laughed. “That’s amazing!”

“D’you like it?” The Doctor did a dramatic spin for her to see all of the rainbows and sparkles she had to offer.

“Only if there’s something like that for me, too,” Yaz said jokingly.

The Doctor held up the matching one for her to see, and Yaz’s mouth gaped open with another small laugh.

“I can’t wait to put that on. I’m almost done, give me just a sec.”

She turned back to the mirror to finish her makeup. The Doctor laid the clothes on a nearby chair for her once she was done.

“Well, don’t take too long,” she told Yaz. “I’ll go ahead and set us for takeoff. Should only be a few minutes before we’re there.”

She quickly turned to leave the room, excited for their first fun adventure in a while. Hopefully this planet would live up to the hype that she has heard about it.

The console room welcomed her with a few happy vworps and a change in lighting. She had made notes of the coordinates before when she first made the discovery of this planet, and she entered them now for their destination. The Doctor pulled the lever, and the TARDIS took off with its usual fanfare.

The sound of Yaz entering the room made her head turn. She gave the Doctor a cheeky smile while she posed for a moment, showing off her outfit with another giggle. She looked stunning, to say the least. And that laugh of hers could always make the Doctor melt.

The ensemble she had picked for Yaz was just as eye-catching as her own, with silver sequins and other sparkly embellishments all over. She had done her makeup very similar to how she had on the Doctor’s face, with lots of colors and glitter as well. Each of their looks were composed of elements from each other: Yaz with her makeup skills and the Doctor with her fun fashion sense.

“We’re almost there,” the Doctor said with that huge smile still on her face. “Get your dancing shoes ready.”

--

Stepping out of the TARDIS doors, the Doctor was in awe at the sight in front of her. Yaz stepped out next to her, both of them looking around excitedly. It was nighttime, and the stars were shining brightly above despite the amount of colorful lights ahead of them. There was loud music that could be heard even from where they stood away from the commotion.

The main area appeared to be a dance floor, and it was full of all sorts of creatures enjoying themselves to the music and lights. Most of them looked humanoid, but there were a few that definitely stood out from the bunch.

“Well, Yaz,” the Doctor started. Her gaze tore away from the spectacle to look at the other woman beside her endearingly. This was the fun bit where she got to share facts about the location they’ve traveled to. “Welcome to the planet of Manguha. Its society was built on the sole purpose of being an endless night club, essentially. The party here never stops.”

Yaz looked back at her with nothing but delight in her eyes. Finally, an adventure to look forward to. No threats to worry about, and no secrets to hide anymore.

“Well come on, then.” Yaz grabbed her hand and flashed her a huge smile. “What are we waiting for? Let’s get in there.”

The feeling of Yaz’s hand in hers wasn’t unfamiliar, but in this new context it certainly was. There had never been any chances for them to properly explore the bond that had grown between them in their travels until now. Yaz pulled her away from the TARDIS and towards the endless party.

--

The sparkles on their clothes reflected the colorful lights of the party around them as they danced. The Doctor had been hesitant to start, but Yaz encouraged her to loosen up a bit and have some fun. She had never been good at dancing - or so she has been told by many - but it didn’t stop her from making a complete fool of herself on the regular. This time was no different.

Neither of them knew any of the songs that were playing, but it didn’t matter. The Doctor watched Yaz dance around happily, and that familiar warm sensation growing in her chest. It was inevitable, with some companions. And the Doctor always ended up soft for them in the end.

The glittering stars in the sky were no match for the bright shining star that was Yasmin Khan on the dance floor.

“Doctor?” Yaz shouted over whatever alien song was playing. “You gotta dance, you’re slowing down!”

Yaz grabbed her hand once more with a laugh and pulled her in close, shuffling her feet and shaking her hips to the beat of the music around them. The Doctor began laughing as well, trying her best to follow whatever silly dance Yaz was doing. An electric sensation was running through her veins at the feeling of Yaz’s hand in hers while they danced.

If this moment could last forever, the Doctor would be happy. Dancing with Yaz under the moonlight of this weird planet made her feel like she was levitating, with no chance of ever coming back down.

And even if she wanted to, she couldn’t stop.
