april, fooled

Summary:

Ria's new friend is claiming that it's "April Fool's Day", whatever that is. She can't imagine how that would call for making her life miserable, though. (She's being dramatic when she says that. At least a little.)

Work Text:

“Phoebe.”

“Ria.”

Ria sighed. “Phoeb, why is my magi-orb interface switched to light mode?”

Phoebe tried very hard to not laugh and failed miserably.

“Are you kidding me? I can’t turn it off!”

“I may have asked a friend to hack into your magi-orb…”

At this news, Ria grew even more distraught. “Why?”

“Come on, Ri, it’s April Fools Day! Don’t tell me you don’t know!”

It had been a few months since Phoebe and Ria had met as part of a very long science project, and Ria did know that Phoebe hadn’t had too many real friends before that- just the kind of people you know and would say hi to you if you passed them in the hall, but didn’t actually care about you too much. This knowledge, however, could not help Ria process what she had just said.

“What’s April?”

Phoebe frowned in confusion. “It’s… a month?”

“No, it’s not.”

“Yes, it is! Well, maybe it’s not a month now, but it used to be a month.”

Ria once again had trouble processing that statement. Maybe light mode on the magi-orb was giving her a headache or something.

“Is this another prank?”

“What- no!”

“Seriously, what the fuck, Phoeb, you can’t just do that with no warning.”

“I’m- don’t say the F word!”

“We’re sixth graders, not babies.”

“Anyway, I’m super sorry. I’ll have to call my friend and get him to undo it. And also possibly murder him.”

“Oh, you’d better. And when you’ve fixed it, I’d like a detailed explanation of why you thought that was a good idea.” Ria wasn’t as mad as she probably sounded, though. Maybe, in the future, when she didn’t feel like she was being stabbed in the eyes every time she glanced at the screen of her magi-orb, they’d be able to laugh about this together.

In the future. Until then, Ria had an apology to receive. And Phoebe had a friend to yell at.
