"Hey, my little firecracker," Skeppy cooed when he entered the nursery to find Sapnap already awake. The toddler was rubbing at his eyes sleepily.
"Dada," Sapnap mumbled, "up." He reached his arms out, making lazy grabby motions with his hands, and yawned widely. It put his small, cute baby fangs on display.
"Okay, how can I ever refuse you anything," Skeppy said as he reached into the crib to lift Sapnap into his arms. He felt his heart stutter at the way the toddler curled into his chest, and rubbed at his back gently. "Do you know what day it is?" he asked him softly.
Sapnap shook his head. "Mmm, no."
"It's Papa's birthday," Skeppy whispered into his hair.
Perking up, Sapnap leaned back and looked at Skeppy with wide eyes. "Birthday?" he repeated.
Skeppy nodded and chuckled. "Yeah, today is Papa's birthday."
Sapnap started to bounce excitedly in his arms. His little hands grabbed at Skeppy's diamond studded cheeks. "Really? Birthday?" he checked.
Skeppy nodded again. "Yes, baby, it's his birthday today."
Sapnap squealed. "Birthday!" he cheered. He squished Skeppy's cheeks and then giggled about the way it looked.
"Do you want to help me make him breakfast?" Skeppy asked. His words were muffled from Sapnap's continued hold, and it only served to make the toddler laugh harder.
"Dada is silly!" Sapnap giggled.
Skeppy crossed his eyes and stuck his tongue out playfully, and Sapnap threw himself backwards with a hysterical laugh. Anticipating this, Skeppy was quick to adjust his grip and make sure he had a good hold on the wriggling child.
"You're a crazy little thing," Skeppy laughed with a shake of his head. He waited for Sapnap to calm down before he tried again. "So, do you want to help me with making Papa birthday breakfast?" he asked.
Sapnap nodded vigorously. He started chanting, "yes, yes, yes!"
Moving Sapnap so he was settled on his hip, Skeppy started walking out the room. "What should we make Papa for breakfast?" he asked as he walked down the stairs and headed for the kitchen.
"Mmm," Sapnap's little brows wrinkled in thought. Then he started to bounce excitedly again. "Make Papa panpans!"
"Pancakes? We can make him pancakes," Skeppy said. He got to the kitchen and used his free hand to pull Sapnap's chair out. "Okay, first, I'm going to get you a drink and a snack while I make your pancakes." He placed him in his high chair, and Sapnap smacked at the tray with a fang-toothed smile.
He rummaged through the cupboards for a plastic bowl and then grabbed some fresh fruit from the fridge. He cut the strawberries, bananas and apple into manageable slices, and then placed the bowl onto Sapnap's tray.
"Thank you, Dada," Sapnap said. He grabbed an apple slice and started munching on it.
Skeppy leaned down and pressed a kiss to his temple. "You're welcome, baby."
Then he went through the cupboard for one of Sapnap's plastic cups. "What juice do you want today?" He asked as he grabbed both blackcurrant and orange. He held them up for Sapnap to scrutinise.
Through a mouthful of strawberry, Sapnap answered, "orange!"
"Orange it is," Skeppy said as he made him the juice. He placed that on the tray beside Sapnaps bowl, and ruffled the toddler's dark hair fondly. "You ready for pancakes?" he asked.
Stuffing another strawberry slice in his mouth, Sapnap nodded, bouncing in his chair excitedly.
Skeppy got to work on the pancakes while Sapnap continued to eat his morning snack. He babbled away to Skeppy about all manner of things; what he thought they should do for Papa's birthday, how he was pretty sure there was a giant squid down the drain of the bath, he wanted to go play with Dream again soon, and he was excited for 'panpans'. It was nice to listen to as Skeppy worked on the pancakes, and he was sure to give the appropriate responses when Sapnap paused.
He refilled Sapnap's drink when he asked and dropped his empty bowl in the sink when he was done.
"How high do you think I can flip this pancake?" Skeppy asked, turning to look at him.
The little demon opened his arms as wide as they could go. "This much!"
Raising his brows and whistling lowly, Skeppy said, "that is very high. I appreciate the confidence." Which made Sapnap giggle and swing his legs happily.
Skeppy flipped the pancake and managed to catch it, and Sapnap clapped his hands in delight.
"My turn!" Sapnap shouted. "My turn!"
"Okay, baby, let me put this one on the plate and you can flip the next one with me. Sound good?"
"Yes, yes, yes!"
"Okay, we have to be careful though."
"Okay, Dada!"
Skeppy played some of the pancakes and cut up more strawberries as toppings. Then he served it to Sapnap who cheered, "panpans!" before digging in.
While Sapnap was busy eating his breakfast, Skeppy plated the rest of the pancakes and put Bad's favourite toppings on them. Then he placed the plate on a breakfast tray. He poured a glass of orange and placed that on the tray too. Then, to top it off, he placed a corn flower with a red bow on the tray.
"All gone!" Sapnap shouted.
Skeppy smiled. "Good boy, Sap."
He grabbed the plate and put it in the sink with Sapnap's bowl. Then he grabbed some kitchen roll and cleaned up Sapnap's sticky mouth and hands.
Finally, he lifted Sapnap out of his chair and placed him on his hip. He picked up the tray and Sapnap demanded he help. The two of them - Skeppy holding both Sapnap and the tray while Sapnap 'held' one edge loosely - carried the tray up the stairs and into the master bedroom.
When Sapnap started to get restless, Skeppy let him slide carefully down to the floor, and used his free hand to better hold the tray. He watched Sapnap pad towards the Bad where Bad was laid on his side, eyes closed, and breathing even.
Skeppy knew he was faking it.
There was no way Bad hadn't heard the commotion the two of them had made. His hearing was incredibly sensitive, and as such it was almost impossible to sneak anything by him. The discarded sketch on the bedside table that had not been there when Skeppy had woken up that morning was further evidence that Bad had been woken up by them at some point. But he was pretending to be asleep. To his credit he was doing a very convincing job of looking asleep - only his twitching tail betraying him.
Skeppy was already very much in love with his husband. But the fact he was pretending to be asleep so that their son could surprise him like he wanted to just about made him fall in love all over again.
"Papa! Birthday, Papa!" Sapnap shrieked as he launched himself onto the bed. He jumped around on the bed before dropping onto Bad's side, poking him in the face with a giggle. "Morning time now," he said firmly, "and birthday time. Wake up!"
Bad opened his eyes and sat up with an over dramatic gasp, scooping Sapnap up into his arms before he toppled off. He settled the child into his lap.
"Birthday?" Bad asked, pretending to be confused.
Sapnap giggled and nodded. "Surprise!"
Sapnap turned and beckoned Skeppy over, and the diamond encrusted man carefully brought the breakfast tray over. He waited for Sapnap to wriggle free of Bad's hold to place it in his husband's lap. Then he sat cross-legged beside the demon, and wrapped his arms around his son when the little demon wriggled his way into his lap.
"Happy birthday, Papa!" Sapnap chirped.
Skeppy reached up and brushed some of Bad's fluffy hair from his face. "Happy birthday, love."
"Thank you," Bad murmured quietly. His smile was soft as he looked between the two of them. "Thank you both for doing this for me."
Slowly, he picked up the pretty blue cornflower, and his face flushed a deep red. "It's beautiful," he breathed. He placed it on the bedside table, laid carefully on top of his sketches.
"Papa, I helped make the panpans!" Sapnap told him.
"Did you? I bet you did a wonderful job," Bad said, tail thumping behind him happily. He took a bite of pancake and smiled. "I was right! They're so good."
Sapnap clapped. He looked up at Skeppy. "We did good," he told him as though he wasn't able to hear Bad himself.
Grinning, Skeppy replied, "of course we did. We're the best team."
While Bad ate his birthday breakfast, Sapnap started telling Bad all about what they had done that morning. He chattered away happily while his parents watched him with fond smiles. Bad cut pieces of his pancake off to feed to Sapnap. Until finally the two of them had finished it all.
"Thank you both," Bad said again, eyes crinkled from how wide he was smiling, "that was the best birthday breakfast ever."
Sapnap looked proud of himself.
"Can I have some birthday snuggles now?" Bad asked as he opened his arms wide.
Sapnap scrambled out of Skeppy's lap and dived into Bad's arms. They two squeezed each other tight, giggling happily.
"Dada! Dada, cuddle time!" Sapnap shouted.
Laughing softly, Skeppy shuffled forward to join the cuddle pile.
Bad started to purr at having his family wrapped up in his embrace. He smothered Sapnap's face with kisses which made the toddler laugh breathlessly. Then he turned and pressed a meaningful kiss to Skeppy's cheek.
"Having a good birthday so far?" Skeppy checked.
Bad's arms tightened around them both as he nodded. "The best."
