“Aaaaand that should do it!” Theo said, slapping his hands against his thighs as he stood up and looked at the tent he had finally gotten to stay upright. “Has this thing always been this finicky?”
“If we stopped getting stuck in high wind storms it wouldn’t be so battered.” Ghost said from where he was crouched in front of their fire, feeding more pieces of wood into it to try and get the flames higher so they could cook something for dinner. “I need to pay attention to the weather patterns a bit more so we don’t end up with it flying away from us again.”
“You going to start charting the skies now?” Theo teased, approaching the fire to crouch next to the other. He got a huff from the other but he could see the corner of his lips quirked up a bit. Even if it was the tiniest bit. “What sort of cooking are we doing tonight?” He asked as he reached for the bag that held their food, rifling through it carefully. “I could try and trap a rabbit or go back to the stream and catch us something.”
“I’m fine with what we have for tonight. I just kind of want to eat and rest. It’ll be dark out soon as well. I don’t want you going too far.” Ghost sighed, shoulders sagging as he spoke. He raised a hand, pushing his glasses up to the top of his head while he used his other hand to rub at his face in a clear sign of exhaustion.
Theo watched him for a moment before leaning in and pressing his lips against a pointed ear, pulling back after a few seconds with a small smile. He lifted a hand up quickly to steady Ghost as the other had started leaning into him. “I guess we did make good time on the roads today. You sit back, I’ll fix something up with what we’ve got. I’ll go hunting tomorrow for some fresh meat.” He got a hum in response and he watched as Ghost yawned, leaning back against the large fallen tree trunk Theo had dragged over to make a makeshift bench. He couldn’t help the small swell of affection in his chest as he watched Ghost practically conk out immediately once he no longer had to be in charge of things. It was cute.
It almost made him feel bad when he woke the other later so he could at least get something to eat. He did seem marginally more awake after his short nap though.
“Got darker out faster than I anticipated.” Ghost murmured around his waterskin, tipping his head back to drain the rest of it. He had already made a note to go get both of them filled early in the morning.
“Well you did fall asleep.” Theo pointed out, grinning as he watched Ghost’s cheeks start to turn pink. “You needed the rest, Sunshine. No point in getting embarrassed about it.”
“No, but I still could have helped out more if I hadn’t slept.” Sighing, Ghost shot a small glare at the other but it was quickly dropped when he saw the happy look on Theo’s face in return. “I still have to set up the wards.” He stood up, brushing the dirt off himself as he went and grabbed his bag to grab the items he needed before he moved around their camp to cast the protection around it so they could both sleep without having to do shared watches. Once that was done, he shoved his bag inside their tent and turned around to head back to sit by the fire when he noticed Theo was looking up with a peaceful expression. Looking up at the sky, Ghost’s eyes widened. “I...I don’t think I’ve seen the sky this clear in a long time.”
“It’s pretty.” Theo said quietly, his eyes sliding over to look at Ghost before he beckoned for the other to come back over to sit with him. “C’mere. You wanted to chart the skies right?” He wiggled his fingers out towards Ghost, grinning when he got a roll of the eyes in return. “C’meeerrreeeee.” He wiggled his fingers again at the other, now starting to pout as Ghost stayed away from his reach.
But Ghost relented, heaving a dramatic sigh, and sat down next to Theo comfortably, leaning his head back against the tree trunk to stare up at the sky. He was about to start speaking when a yelp was torn out of him as Theo lifted him up and plopped him into his lap. “Could have just asked you know.” He muttered, settling between Theo’s legs comfortably with his head laid back against the other’s shoulder.
“Yeah yeah but it's more fun to surprise you randomly.” Theo murmured, turning his head slightly to press his lips against the other’s head while he wrapped his arms around the other firmly. He got a content sigh in return and it made his lips quirk up happily. Feeling Ghost shift slightly in his arms, he pulled his head away to look at him with a question on his lips before he noticed Ghost was looking up. He followed his line of sight and felt his breath catch slightly. “Wow.”
“Yeah.” Ghost whispered, relaxing further into Theo’s arms. “I...I don’t think I’ve seen the night sky look like this in...a very long time. It’s gorgeous.”
Theo nodded in agreement, his eyes glued on the thousands upon thousands of stars twinkling brightly above them. “We should do this more often.”
Snorting, Ghost tipped his head back carefully to look at the other. “We camp nearly every night.”
“I mean look at the stars, Sunshine.” Theo chuckled, looking down at Ghost before pressing a gentle kiss to the top of his head. He got a happy hum in response before they fell into a calm silence, both returning to stare up at the sky.
The stars were brilliant but Theo still preferred the bright light of the sun.
