Chapter Text
"Oi, Sparky, it’s your turn to do the dishes,” Katsuki’s voice called from the kitchen
“What no, it’s Hanta’s turn,” The electric blonde whined, momentarily pausing the game he was playing on his switch.
“You lost that bet, remember Denki?” Hata called, comfortable on the other side of the couch as he mindlessly scrolled through his phone.
Denki only whined in return and finally got up, “Fineeee”, and he trudged towards the kitchen
Most of the dishes were from breakfast that morning, a couple from lunch, but there were enough that Katsuki wouldn’t start dinner until they were done. And so he started, washing, drying, and putting them away. Cups, plates, and finally, the variety of mugs that sat there. Red, orange, yellow, pink, lavender, a royal purple, white, and a black one- several of which have been replaced multiple times. Some were bought later than others
Starting with his own, the bright yellow one- everybody claimed the sheer color of it could wake them up, let alone whatever caffeine-enhanced beverage he poured into it- usually, it wasn’t coffee but rather some sort of energy drink, or even plain water. he just wanted the mug to be included if we are being honest. Most mornings it was also one of the last mugs to be filled unless the poor soul had stayed up all night for one reason or another, as an all-nighter wasn’t a rare thing from Kaminari.
The first time his mug broke, it was a moment of shock and actually a good memory!
The phone in his hand finally connected to the other line, and without giving the other man a moment to speak, Denki was already babbling away
“Hey, hey, Hitoshi, ok so- the rest of the house is going on an overnight mission tonight, and I don’t really like being alone- do you want to come to spend the night? We could do so- ”
“Wow okay, thanks for asking how I’m doing and all” the other voice interrupted him
“Oopsies-”
And a couple of hours after the rest of the house was gone, there was a lazy knock on the door. Denki dropped everything, jumped over the back of the couch, and got to the door in a flash, maybe super speed was his actual quirk with the movement he just pulled.
The night was actually a lot of fun, they played on Denki’s switch some, ordered take out for dinner- it was almost like they were back in the dorms again; Denki kind of missed it.
They ended up asleep on the couch, and through the night they shifted to tangle into each other. Surprisingly, Denki was the first one awake, and waking up in such close proximity to your high school crush was hard . Denki, however, cherished this moment even though the slight pain of not being able to be with him. Hitoshi was so relaxed at this moment, so peaceful. The slight rise and fall of his chest and trying to match it consequently made Denki sleepy again, and hence he drifted off, curled up into Hitoshi. No homo, though, sadly.
When Denki’s eyes opened again, Hitoshi wasn’t at his side anymore, and it made him kind of sad, but the smell of coffee made him get over it. He made his way to the kitchen and saw Hitoshi looking in the fridge, pulling out a few things “Wow, you’re actually awake in the morning, I’m impressed”
“It’s hard to stay asleep when your heating source disappears” Denki responded, hugging Hitoshi from behind to try and sap more of his warmth, quickly getting nudged off “Come on you parasite, go make yourself a cup of coffee, I took a wild guess at which mug was yours”
Denki glanced at where his bright yellow mug sat, right next to a grey one that the house bought for guest “You guessed right” he agreed and made his coffee, which had more milk than coffee (Katsuki told him to start using milk because him having a cup of half and half with some coffee was a small fortune).
Breakfast was relatively short, and Hitoshi went and got dressed while Denki started taking care of the dishes. A couple of minutes later a pair of arms wrapped around him “You know, it was cute having you curled up on my chest, Cute enough for me to ask if you wanna go on a date?”
Denki dropped the yellow mug he had been rinsing out “Wait are you being deadass or is this some cruel nightmare.
Hitoshi laughed quietly “I’m being “deadass” Denki,” he said, putting air quotes around the deadass part, and Denki just beamed.
“Fuck yeah, dude!”
Soon after Hitoshi left, the others arrived back, all very tired, and the first thing they walked into was Denki dumping the shard of his coffee cup into a cardboard box for glass waste “Oi dunce face, what the hell did you do?” Katsuki sneered, though not as aggressive as he usually was, obviously still exhausted from their rendezvous the previous night
“I got myself a boyfriend”
The second time the mug broke isn’t the most joyous of memories and it makes Denki shudder thinking about it. The memory is still a bit of a blur, he was sure the others remembered it more.
There were two loud thuds, a shattering noise, and broken sobbing and Denki was convinced he was the only one home, and he was hoping the others would be gone for a while until he composed himself enough
Turns out, he wasn’t the only one home. When the shattering noises were erupting, Katsuki had come barrelling down from his bedroom on the second floor, ready to fight. That’s what his mind went to somebody obviously broke in, there's no way somebody in their own house would cause that commotion. He too was wrong.
The two blondes of the household stood there, not saying anything- Denki was the one who broke the silence “If you’re trying to think of some assholish thing to say, save it for later”
“Why would you think I’m going to be an asshole?”
“I dunno, you’re not the most empathetic person around here”
Katsuki opened his mouth to yell at him, said he would show him empathetic but only closed it.
“Go get dressed, you look like shit and now we need to replace your mug.” Katsuki started, “You’re telling me what happened in the car.”
Denki stood there another moment, frustrated- not at Katsuki, as he was just helping in his way- but at himself for not even trying to see if anybody else was home, frustrated with the request of his boyf- no, ex- boyfriend
And five minutes later, Denki was sniffling in the passenger seat of the car, Katsuki backing out of the driveway.
“What did he do?” Katsuki asked, getting straight to the point
“Wow, no small talk?” Denki teased, a bittersweet edge to his tone. Katsuki just glanced over at him, a half glare on his eyes “Ok ok, I’ll spill” and Denki did just that, it was a long-winded tangent about the whole phone conversation, how he called Hitoshi- no Shinsou - to arrange another date here soon, and how they talked for a bit, and it ended up with a mutual, but not so mutual break up.
“H-He didn’t want to burden me anymore is how he phrased it, and he’s not but how could I express that over the phone? I need to see him Katsuki, but where would I even start- and it’s not like you have good advice, you’re still pining over Eijirou since fucking high school-”
“Sparky, don’t fucking go there” he hissed and flipped off a driver in the other lane who was trying to merge in front of him. Denki laughed quietly at him, glad he wasn’t at the receiving end of Katsuki’s anger this time.
“Listen, I know I’m shit at romance, okay? But as far as anybody else is concerned, I’m a god at it-” Denki rolled his eyes at Katsuki’s claim “But you need to hunt him down and actually talk to him, I’m not going to listen to you wallow in your self-pity any more after today.” Denki only nodded slightly
The trip was a short one, and soon enough they walked back into the house, bags in tow, and the first thing Denki noticed was that the mugs were cleaned up, the box they dispose of the glass in was still sitting out, a collage of yellow and purple was on the top layer, mixed with some other colors underneath it. In hindsight, Denki was glad Katsuki was there, who knows how much more destructive things would have gotten if he was alone. And in his own way, Katsuki has his own way of comforting Denki, dumb insults and all.
The night ended with him sending a simple text
“We need to talk. In person.”
