Work Text:
He got distracted, and that was the worst error he could've made. One second he was teasing his cousin, the next he was getting hit with some curse that sent him stumbling backward toward the eerie veil in the middle of the room.
Just as he felt himself falling into the veil, he searched the room for those amber eyes that always draw him over. Those eyes, so full of intelligence. Those eyes, bright with mischief so long ago. Those magnetic eyes that always were a mystery for him, begging to be solved. Those eyes, belonging to his last friend.
Everything was going in slow motion, but he knew he didn't have more than a few seconds left. He barely registered the heartbreaking cry coming from somewhere to his left. He turned his head automatically and faced the saddest image he could think of. Harry was trying to get to him, and in his face was reflected all the grief and sadness he was feeling realizing his godfather's deadly fate. But then, he registered Remus. He was trying to stop Harry from doing something rash, like jumping to the veil after him. But Remus' face wasn't better than Harry's. Grief, sadness, remorse.
Finally, his eyes made contact with Remus'. The amber color there was brighter with unshed tears. Wide eyes that were looking disbelievingly to the scene in front of them. Sirius knew his grey eyes were a mirror of Remus'. But in that fleeting moment in which they locked gazes for the last time, time froze.
He froze mid-fall. Everyone else in the room froze in the middle of the battle. Only his eyes could move, but they were firmly focused on Remus'.
At that moment, something snapped in his head. Hundreds of images of Remus and him flowed in front of his eyes. There were some in which they were together and happy, and others in which they were sad and broken.
He knew what those images meant. Now, he could understand what that magnetic pull toward Remus he felt all his life was. Soulmates. They were soulmates. That meant that this world, this life, was just one of the many realities they have been together. And there will be many more.
Soulmates meant that they were destined to always find each other; that all the decisions they make led them to meet and share a part of their lives; that not in all realities, they will be happy or good for each other. He knew that, alongside the times in which they were friends or a couple, there would be times in which they were enemies or broke each other in various ways. But the thing was that they would have each other, and they would learn and share what they needed each time. There were so many possibilities for the different realities they still have ahead of them.
He let himself be comforted by the fact that he will find Remus next time. He just wished for it to be earlier rather than later.
With that thought, he felt time return to its normal pace. He was still looking at Remus when he felt the pull from the veil. He let himself fall into the void, promising Remus to find him again and again and again.
