Work Text:
“Jack?” Castiel called out, as he wandered the bunker. Eventually he came to the library, where two of the tables were repositioned, and a blanket being held up by them, serving as some sort of roof. Castiel walked over and lifted the blanket slightly, finding Jack underneath it. “This is a contraption you have.” He noted.
Jack looked up fondly when he saw his father “Oh! This is a blanket fort, I read about them online. Apparently they’re a staple of childhood.” He noted, as he seemed to be enjoying himself. He had a book out in front of him, it was about the Victorian Era. “Queen Victoria did some amazing things.” Jack said simply, closing the book.
Castiel cocked his head, he was familiar with Queen Victoria, but he wondered why Jack picked that book out of all books. Jack scooted to the side “Do you wanna come in with me?” He questioned. Castiel looked around the fort “Perhaps we can make a project out of this.” He suggested. Jack thought about that for a moment “What do you mean?” Castiel then took a step back and came back with a few broomsticks.
Sliding them underneath he looked at Jack “Supports.” He said simply.
Castiel and Jack spent the next two hours on the fort, of course it had collapsed a few times. But Jack suggested they watch some videos on how to make pillow forts. When it was finally done, it didn’t exactly resemble a pillow fort, more of a pillow castle made of cardboard boxes, broomsticks, tape, blankets and of course pillows.
The two spent another few hours reading about the Victorian Era, an hour into reading about it Castiel finally asked Jack why he was so interested in that Era over the others. Jack seemed happy to answer “It was when everything began to grow, and I feel… I can relate.” Jack said, trying to put the words he was trying to convey together.
Castiel nodded understandingly “Everyone is capable of growth, even when it feels impossible.” Jack then dived in and hugged Castiel. “Thank you for believing in me, Dad.” Being called Dad took him aback, but it was a good feeling, like the inside of him was filled with the warmth of God himself, with Jack and the others, Cas felt whole.
Castiel tightened his hug around Jack, and as he held Jack close picked up a book about the Victorian Era, this being about various inventions. Jack fell asleep halfway through the book in the safety of the pillow fort, a pillow fort which much like Jack and the Victorian Era, grew into something wonderful.
